"Still They Ride"-totally different vox delivery..

Postby TRAGChick » Sat Apr 14, 2007 11:14 am

...from the rest of the "Escape" album...but guess what?

PERFECT for the upcoming "Frontiers" tour.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jubogiBaUhQ

I really think that's the reason why this song WORKS so well during the "Frontiers 83" Concert.

Another thing that people don't realize is this:

A Singer's voice - be it male or female - does not reach its full sound, maturity, and strength until that person is in their early 30s. Seriously. I learned that from my Voice Teachers.

To use a phrase posted here by some of the guys: it seemed like Steve "manned-up" between 81 and 83: filled out a bit, got a more diverse sound to his vocals, and cut his hair...everything seemed to fall into place. IMO this was the best look: this one, going into the "Strung Out" era - after that, they were the victims of the "Image Police" - a tad TOO "done-up" for my taste.

The Boudokan "Open Arms" ~ my God ~ I wish I could edit the "Escape" tour with this one, so this song would be on "Split-screen"....the delivery in the 83 version...man....Steve sounds like he went thru MAJOR shit - which helps to give THE BEST DELIVERY of this song live that I've ever heard....wow....

No, I haven't.

I'm starting a discussion about being a Singer.

I understand that, and I love reading YOUR perspective because you CAN sing..I like your voice...but "Manned UP?" Perry does NOT "Man Up."

So, you think the Steve Perry of 1981 looks the same as the 1983 version?

Steve Perry was born to sing next to Neal Schon. Sadly, he chooses not to....for now. This song is just one of many examples of why he is the greatest singer......ever. He can sing the same song with slightly different variations in his delivery, and I'll be damned if you can't decide which version is the best. THAT is the sign of a truly magnificent artist.

I liked Steve's voice the best on TBF. He may have not had the chops to nail "Winds of March" anymore, but I've never heard anyone with that much soul and emotion in his delivery also have that fucking beautiful a voice.

Nice post.

I listened to his solo stuff last night...even the cheesy pop stuff. Couldn't turn it off, as hard as I tried.

SJ, (sigh) sadly enough I have never seen SP live, but can only listen to albums an boots. His voice just tugs at your heart strings..I can never decide which version of a song is the best, either.

SJ, I loved your observation re: SP and Neal being born to play music together; I am able to listen to my IPod during work and have 650+ songs on it (lots of them are repeats :) ) and (ramble, ramble, ramble) I have the '79 Comiskey Park recording on there which I think Sallee posted 6 months ago.... ANYWAY, when Patiently or Daydream or Opened the Door or La Do Da or Majestic come on (especially on the IPod), I am struck by the unity between these two--it's almost miraculous (corny, I know). It's like they are one instrument--I don't know if it was through tons of rehearsal or what. So, I'm listening to all my fabulous variety of music and then Journey comes on and it hits me what a fantastic group of musicians they were/are... And this is a LIVE recording--those who saw them then are SO LUCKY!

Natural chemistry is something a million rehearsals can't create. Again, it's sad that Perry continues to shun Journey. Perry and Schon had more chemistry than any other two people in the history of music. The interaction between the two was simply magical. I miss it a lot. You hear that Perry? Fucker.

....Steve sounds like he went thru MAJOR shit - which helps to give THE BEST DELIVERY of this song live that I've ever heard....wow....

I believe that between 81 and 83,Steve must've realized that his voice can do a lot more than just climbing the Himalayas,so he explored his whole range.
Also,I continue to believe that he got serious about being vocally coached...
No matter how naturally gifted is a singer,he/she has to have a scientifical approach on the delivery.Otherwise, the voice can get burned pretty fast because of the improper use....(I'm sure you know this Nora.)
I'm saying this because I noticed some technical changes in the way Steve sang the song in 1983 compared to 1981.

Some good vocal training,a new album,a new era in Journey's career - all good reasons for a change of vocal perspective.

You are right with that,Nora...He must've been going through some really rough times (sentimentally of course) and I can sure hear some real pain behind some of the love songs...
Like they say...Someone's pain can be another one's joy.

I think Perry's voice between 81-83 was definitely at his best. I loved how his voice sounded on Frontiers, and I understand where Tragchk comes from when she says Perry "manned up." Like many of us reach our prime in our early 30's, Perry was at his prime then. In fact, the Frontiers album is what made me become such a big fan of the band. While it might not have been their best album (I hold Escape as #1,) it had that perfect melodic sound that I was drawn to at that time.

The greatest hits live album has a version of "Still They Ride" that is quite similar to this one. Heck, it might be the same performance. But, I love the live version because of Perry's performance AND how Neal changed the solo just slightly to make it seem more soulful.

Perry's voice is one thing...leaves me speechless. What delivery, passion, technique. Man...friggin' phenomenal!!

But...Neal's solo...MAN!! Talk about letting your emotions "speak" through your instrument!!!

Dig NS...one of the GREATS of his genre!

Popping a zit on your penis hurts like shit. I have had 2 of them in my lifetime. It really fucking hurts. Too much jerking off back in the day I guess. You absolutely have to get hard to get rid of the fucking thing.

So, you think the Steve Perry of 1981 looks the same as the 1983 version?

The Perry of 81 BLOWS AWAY the raspy Perry of 83. Most definitely. I think the 83 look was lamer too. I'd take the ROR look over that look.
The WORST was when he had a mustache. Dang, Chico and the Man.
Having said that, THIS really IS a great performance of the tune. This was before the rasp got that heavy.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.
