A-Z of Journey Wk2 B's

Postby styxman » Thu Apr 26, 2007 5:51 am

I for one would like the people on this site with insight and knowledge on Journey to help over the next 26 weeks compile a topic with all things Journey, starting this week with A's and next week B's and so on.

This thread would act like a quick guide to Journey. No pissin' about, only facts and not assumptions, anything Journey...band members, management, songs. If it's a band member try and fill us in with their pre/post Journey projects, designers who have shaped the Journey look over the years, roadies who have helped them from city to city, colorful characters over the years, something interesting about one of their songs, as for concerts, the city or town played in dictates the listing..Houston in H....a concerts a concert I know but something might have happen such as the slip, anything interesting will do, just list it!

What I don't want is listing a song and saying why you like it...that's not what this is about, it's factual info I'm after.

So starting from now it's A e.g Azzoff, Augeri and so on.....I'll let you know when it's time to change to B. I'm not replying or takin' part in this, just interested in finding out all things Journey. Try and post a picture of the people you make reference to also, but don't plaster the topic with too many  Word of Warning, don't kick off with Augeri, list the dude's achievements no matter what you thought of him

Alien Project - The band Perry was with that recorded the demo that Don Ellis heard and gave to Herbie Herbert. This resulted in Perry being recruited for Journey.

Arrival - Journey's triumphant post-Perry recording with Steve Augeri on vocals. Sales were seriously hurt by the album being leaked on Napster before its release.

Well, technically Big Bird does have a slight connection to Journey.

When Journey was at the Howard Stern show in the early 80's, Perry allegedly bumped into Howard in the hallway, and called him big bird. To this day. Stern hates "that Goddamned Stephen Perry!"

There is your connection.

AC/DC

Journey played on the same bill with this band on 9/1/78, along with Ted Nugent, Blue Oyster Cult, & Cheap Trick. They also played on the same bill on 8/28/79.

Atari 2600 - Journey was the first rock band that had its own video game.Released in 1982.

The idea of the game was to safely get all the 5 Journey members from the stage to their Scarab Escape Vehicle.
Meanwhile they had to make their way through the female fans (called "love crazed groupies") or avoid all kinds of backstage traps.
The theme song of the video game was a computerized version of DSB.

Irving Azoff

Journey's current manager. Here's what Wikipedia has to say of him...

Irving Azoff is a famous music industry manager of bands such as Jewel, The Eagles, Bush, REO Speedwagon, Dan Fogelberg, Seal, Journey, Christina Aguilera, Van Halen and Steely Dan. Irving was born on December 12, 1947. He is chairman and founder of Azoff Music Management Group, Inc. Mr. Azoff began promoting and booking bands during his college years at the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana, Illinois, and has worked as an agent, personal manager, concert promoter, movie producer, independent record label owner, merchandiser, music publisher, and CEO of a record company.

He is the former head of MCA records and is credited for saving the company from bankruptcy. In 1983, Azoff followed Geffen's lead by becoming head of a major label, in this case the floundering MCA label. Azoff resigned from MCA in 1989 to form his own record label, Giant, now defunct.

Irving co-produced the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Irving Azoff has been named "Manager of the Year" by two touring industry's trade publications.

In the 70s, his management style was characterized by complex manipulations and dramatic about-faces that he and his clients seemed to find much more humorous than his opponents. Even during his decade as head of MCA, he was known to be fiercely loyal to his former clients, many of whom have returned now that he is back on the management side. His most famous quote is "I never met an asshole in the record business I didn't like."

I'm not the best person on facts about bands, so this topic will act as a refresher..it should be a good reference as the contribution so far is interesting 8) Perhaps Jeff can ask the band for bit's and pieces and also post a few things we didn't know
