Me singing Whos Crying now. (more karaoke if anyone cares)

Got some new recording gear (prosonus mic pre amps and a Rode Nt-1 mic) and thought what better way to see how this gear sounds. The backing track is a karaoke track with me singing over the top of it. Wish I could find some musicians around here that could play this stuff as I would enjoy doing this stuff live but for now this is my only singing outlet. Hope you like it.

You sound GREAT, dude. Where do you live? We could be the first cover band with two lead singers and two guitarists. Seriously, we have similar sounds (yours is more emotive than mine, I must admit), and I've been tossing around this idea for years...I can play rhythm guitars and the keys...we'd take the middle-aged world by storm!

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. Shania, I recorded them between October 06 and this week. I do it when the urge strikes or I get new piece of recording gear. They serve a dual purpose really. First its fun and a way to work on my singing and knowing that others might hear it makes me treat it as a serious recording project. Second, it is helping me "tweak" my studio out plus develops my recording, engineering and production skills. Anyone familliar with studio engineering knows that the hardest part is getting a good vocal or drum sound. I just do this to help develop my "chops" in and out of the studio. My real band sounds nothing like this and I dont sing at all in it because honestly the drumming for that stuff takes enough concentration. As a matter of fact I often get flack from them for being a Journey fan hehe. I keep trying to tell them to listen to everything because you never know what you might learn from it.

No matter the purpose why you have recorded them for,you've done a great job,LD! Would love to hear more,so whenever the urge strikes ,just do it and share.
A few years ago,a singer told me that singing some of Journey's songs with SP is just like a good vocal training,especially "Something To Hide" and "La Do Da"...Ever tried those?Not easy to sing,but it really is great for warming and shaping the voice.

Alright, I need to confess that I've listened to you NAIL this song a half dozen times, and you completely blow me away vocally. You maintain a JSS-like resonance in your upper register. Tell you what - you take lead vox, and I'll hammer away on the keys and rhythm and do my best Mike Anthony imitation.

Question...can you "soar" in songs like "Seperate Ways" ?? man your wasted on the drum kit... are you doin this stuff in just two or three takes...or are you compositing many tries for each line...if your doin it the previous way..... you are a natural..and should really be out there furthering the much maligned cause of quality melodic rock...as a vocalist!!

I must admit my stamina in the upper ranges could be better. I can do a few songs up there and it starts to go. I smoke and suffer from bad allergies. As a matter of fact I can NEVER breathe out of both nostrils at the same time as one is always partially blocked. So if I were singing this stuff live I would have to scatter the higher ranged songs out. Then again I am doing them in the original keys which is damn demanding for anyone. Its mainly the early Journey that wears me out as I spend too much time in my head voice because I can sing the stuff from the Frontiers/ROR era without too much trouble. I have a version of After The Fall that I have not posted because the vocal mic that was used brought out this shrillness in my voice that sounds almost piercing and I have not been able to EQ it out. Nice mic but wrong for my voice I guess. I may post it with a treble advisory! I dont sing everyday so maybe the stamina could be built up and I am not trained so I would bet I am doing a few things wrong. For instance I know I sing too loudly which I would bet is responsible for my stamina issues. I feel that I have to belt to hit some of those notes. Bad technique ? I dunno. I only know that I really wish I would have taken singing more seriously and done it years ago. I am 35 now and back when I was in my early 20's I would only sing alone and not very much. I cant imagine what my range might have been like back then. Drums always suited me more because I dont want to be in front and I think I am a far better drummer than singer anyway. You sound great - i found a couple of others and listened to them as well - awesome.

Your above post is very interesting - however, stop beating yourself up and enjoy yourself and your talent.

You are VERY good. I'd stop the smoking. I've heard and seen you around for at least a year and have always enjoyed your voice. You do keep getting better. I'd encourage you to keep singing and try to do something more with that voice.

Try getting a vocal warm up CD and do it every day for a while.
You'll maybe struggle on some notes for a bit but after time you'll find you can hit them.
Its like working any muscle in your body, you build up strength & stamina over time.

I use the Ellen Johnson one from CD Baby. Its quite good.
