OT: Rush - Snakes & Arrows

Postby conversationpc » Sun Apr 29, 2007 12:13 pm

Just picked up the new Rush album "Snakes & Arrows" at Wal Mart today. It wasn't supposed to be released until Tuesday but they apparently put it out early due to its leaking to the internet several days ago.

I have to say that I'm loving it so far. I couldn't say that for either "Vapor Trails" or "Test for Echo" after my first listen. Geddy and Neil are both their usual excellent selves. I will say that Geddy's bass is easier to hear this time around thanks to MUCH better production than the crappy sound on the last one. There are three instrumentals, all excellent, in my opinion and Alex Lifeson wails like he hasn't done since the early 80s.

I'm liking it at least as well as anything since the early 90s and possibly since "Hold Your Fire" in '87.

You won't be disappointed. It is SO MUCH better than the previous two. I would probably like "Vapor Trails" a whole lot better actually if the production on it were even marginal but it's almost unlistenable.

There are a lot more acoustic textures on this album, too, compared to the last few. It makes for excellent contrasts between that and the rest of the album, something that's been missing from their music for a long time, in my opinion.

Someone posted in the Rush forum that it was released in select areas but who knows. They may have just gone ahead and released it everywhere.

How are Geddy's vocals?
Any 70's/early 80's style Geddy wailing, or is it all the more laidback vocal approach that he moved towards throughout the 90's?

I'm a rush fan, I love their music a lot, (as soon as a get a freakin job im going to buy all their cd's remastered)
It's just that this CD just didn't give me those feels like rush once did before..
It kind of sound like just another cd to put out rather than as if they were reaching for something..
I actually haven't spent much time checking out those 2 cd's u mentioned yet.. I should do that tomorrow when i wake up.
I have so much music and trying to find a lot more older stuff thats hidden - it hard to keep up with all the artists and all their cds.

But as i said, it just doesn't have that nice feeling to it i get from their older cds like "Hold Your Fire", the drums didn't have the beats and power as once before.
Its just my opinion though, I just say, download the cd from somewhere online as a test drive befor eyou buy it - You might like it.. I just wish it was a more thought out CD than it ended up being.

No where near 70-80's style, the hooks are not there, even the guitar solos are just not there anymore.

This really has nothing to do with Rush, but i keep wanting to tell people about these bands and artists..

You all should take some time and check out these few artists / bands.

I think its one of the strongest albums they have done in a long time. I will admit its needs a few listens, like most Rush to be honest, but it really grows on you.Might go and check them out again on this tour.

I've been listening to it for a week or so now, and I just can't get into it. Although I loved Vapor Trails, so I'm already in the vast minority of Rush fans...this one's just lacking a lot of memorable melodies and choruses that T4E and VT had (IMO).

Armor and Sword is one of the best songs they have ever written. The whole album is very different for Rush. Lots of acoustic guitar on this one. Very good IMO.

Can`t stop playing this album at the moment.

Would probably say even in it`s early stages, this is the best album they`ve done in a long time.

It is that good! :D

They've been playing "Far Cry" on the radio...that's the only song I've heard. Guess I should pick it up since I'm seeing them in June.

Walmart has it, and it's an excellent collection of songs from start to finish. Can't wait to hear this stuff live.
