Opinion: From the typically oversuperlative way Frankie describes the current lineup and McCauley in particular it seems to me his mind was made up to do the McCauley thing as kind of an indulgence of a pet project: ie: really digs my man, has wanted for a while to see what survivor would be like with him, will have a 2-3 year MAYBE 1 album trial and if it's a failure we'll be reading the praises of Dave again or about how Jimi is "Golden Throat" again.
That's not to say the grand McCauley experiment won't work, just a contigency plan.
Sounds like a great album title "The Grand McCauley Experiment"
