Voices of Rock

Postby *Laura » Thu May 03, 2007 4:47 pm

This is a hard one,but I gotta know.I am having this debate at least 10 times a year with people and it ends up in flames.
Polls like this have been done quite often,I know...I guess one more can't hurt.

This is not about the whole package (best entertainer, frontman, number of years in the biz),it's just about the quality of the voice,skills,technique,range,uniqueness...you get it.

These are the singers that I came up with from the top of my head, the ones that usually make it to the list, but if there are others I forgot, please use the option and post the name(s).

I was tempted to add Ann Wilson, but while she has no rival among the female rock singers and even beats some of the males,an all-male Poll is better in this case.

IMO the Reigning Queen in Rock at the moment is Sharon den Adel of Within Temptation - but that's just me. ;)

I went with "Other". I think you have to be more specific and categorize. For example, "Best Melodic Rock Voice" & "Best Heavy Metal Voice". Trying to choose between SP and Dio is impossible for me because they sing such different types of material. Not having clear categories could also be the source of your debates, too

You've categorized this as all-male and I think that's smart. There's a good list of female vocalists. Pat Benatar, Patty Smyth (who Van Halen originally asked to replace DLR!), Janis Joplin (who I think is the greatest), Lita Ford, Stevie Nicks, Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett, etc.

I'd have to say Elvis is the greatest male rock vocalist. He kicked off the genre and then transcended it. That's something JOURNEY has yet to do since SP. With SP they transcended their early progressive style. Then with JC they transcended the Gregg Rolie influences. With ROR they transcended their own rock influences. They just haven't transcended anything since. Transcending is what made Elvis, The Beatles - many of "the greats" - great.

The Garden of Eden can't be found on a map. It's not a geographical location. It's right where you are - if you're in the spirit.

Ah,I guess I just wanted a simple Poll and that's why I listed some classic voices that have been/are representative in Rock in general.
Of course that categorizing the genres would ease up the debates, but hey,why go soft when you can go rock? A good debate keeps the mind in shape...

I guess a vote for the voice that impressed *you* the most is what I was looking for.

...here's one of my favorites from the latest album - The Heart Of Everything - unfortunately, this isn't as good a performance as I saw last week, but it gives you the idea:

I would like to think that Perry would top this list
and wear the crooning crown but since he hasn't put
forth anything in over 10 yrs, I had to go with someone
who's still in the game......Paul Rogers for me.

With some of those names, I think we're picking apples to oranges. I mean, some are pure metal singers, others are AOR.

Shania - I love "Queen of the Reich" - and it's definitely a metal classic. But Tate's pompous falsetto never fails to raise a smile. I mean...I like it but only in an ironic kind of a way. I can't take him seriously. I just can't.

Perry will always be my favorite singer. I just can't find anyone better than Steve when he sang from 78-82.

Others that get my respect are Paul Rogers (Rodgers?), Rick Florian, John Elefante', Delp, of course, and Mercury.

Throw Soto in there, since I just recently discovered him. The fact that he can sing many styles of music is impressive. I like the emotion he sings with - it is true love of the music.

Oh, and I'm not just saying this because it's a Journey forum. I was blown away by his Edge Of The Blade and I'll Be Alright Without You.

Never heard this before :o! I mean the whole industry and the metal fans take him as seriously as a heart attack...!
Sure,he has maybe a more theatrical ring to his voice than other rock singers, but that's what makes him unique.
I can't even imagine another vocal aproach to Op. Mindcrime!

I don't know...I guess it's a matter of what we each hear,after all...

Because I didn't care for his voice after 82, except for songs like Strung Out, Foolish Heart, It's Just The Rain, and Can't Tame The Lion. I don't care for the album Frontiers at all, nor do I like Strange Medicine.

I thought he sounded awful on the Memphis clips on YouTube as well.

I don't understand the question, unless you are trying to corner me as a "Perry can do no wrong" person - which I am not.

Care to elaborate?
