There are definitely some bands that really believe in that stuff. Glenn Danzig is one, in my opinion, and there are some others, especially in the death metal genre. Cannibal Corpse also has some seriously sick lyrics, so sick I couldn't eat hamburger for weeks after reading some lyrics from a song about a family who was in a car wreck and the graphic descriptions of what happened to their bodies. Disgusting stuff.

Matthew
Me too! I got given a Ecstasy tablet for my birthday back in 1990 and we all went to a trance night...and I saw the light! For about a decade I never looked back. My rock records just gathered dust. But the moment I sobered up...then back came the 80s AOR...and it sounded great all over again. Smile

Oh man, you must have lived a parallel life? The exact same happened to me. Its the best, simple as that. I was very naughty at last years Monsters, just coming up as Journey came on. State I was in I couldn't have given a flying fuck that it was mimed. Tee Hee! Still have the occasional visit!

I believe King Diamond is a devotee of the black arts, or was at one time. His body of work pretty much speaks for itself, but I think he's had some association with Anton LeVay's family at one point as well...

Yeah, I believe I've read that somewhere also. Just read the lyrics to the Mercyful Fate song "The Oath". Yikes!

...and then there's Jimmy Page's fascination with famous occultist/satanist/witchcraft practitioner Aleister Crowley. He actually lives, or used to live, in Crowley's mansion on the shores of Loch Ness and owned one of the largest occult bookstores in Europe. For that matter, there are other musicians who have a fascination with that guy. His face is actually one in the crowd pictured on The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". Not saying The Beatles are Satanic but it's just kinda interesting to note.

I think Mercyful Fate was much more satanist/witchcraft focused than King's solo work, which was always more gothic horror than seriously satanic.

I think King used the KD band as a vehicle to do more concept-album type of
material. I still LOVE the "Them" album and storyline. I had the follow-up (sequel)
but can't remember the title. It was pretty killer as well.

Was it "The Eye?" I can't remember. I would have loved to see KD live. Back in the day, there was a show at Jannus Landing in St Pete, FL (where all the thrash bands played in the 80's) that I THINK was King Diamond and Anthrax. This would have been around the "Among The Living" and "Abigail" days. LOTS of shows I would have loved to go back in time to see.

Anthrax...There's another band that's trying to use the Satanism angle with all the pentagrams on their recent releases. I think theirs is more cartoonish, though, than anything KD/Mercyful Fate has done.

I've lost track of all these guys over the past 20 years, but back in the day with Joey Belladona and Dan Spitz, the band was FAR from serious, they were kind of a "jokey" band and had one of the best live shows going. Scott Ian's rapport with the audience was amazing...The stuff they did with Chuck D and Public Enemy was pretty groundbreaking as well. Surprised they've taken up the satanism angle.

Here's three of their more recent album covers, all featuring the pentagram...

I also remember seeing Scott Ian wearing a shirt that said "McSatan" on Vh1, so it's probably just for its cartoonish qualities.

The last one looks pretty cool. The first one looks a lot like "Among the Living." And Scott Ian looks like satan these days. Is Joey Belladona back in the band?

Belladonna was for a tour or 2 and there was speculation that they would record a new album with he and Spitz on board. I haven't heard anything in awhile but I think Belladonna is, once again, out and Bush "might" be back in. I did like some of the "Bush" era albums/songs.
'Only', 'Pottersfield' and 'Safe Home' still get tons of airplay on my stereos and iPod :)
As for the pentegrams, Anthrax is all about fun, mocking themselves and playing LOUD.

Didn't the other guys in the band initially give Belladonna a hard time for being a big fan of Steve Perry? He is one of the better metal singers, in my opinion. I'm not a big fan of Anthrax per se, but I like his voice.
