OT: Anyone see the movie, "La Bamba?"

I was going through my DVD rock collection and came across the movie "La Bamba." I've been fascinated with this movie every since I can remember, and this movie is what really braught me into the interest of music. I put 'er in and came to realize that this is probably the best making of any Rock 'N Roll singer of all time...Ritchie Valens. Since the day I saw this movie, I've been afraid to fly.

The way the story is told and the way it described his life really brings you in, and the charactors are played so well in this movie. Lou Diamond Phillips does an excellent job Lip Synchin' the parts during the whole movie and really leads you to believe he IS really singing. (I know what you're all thinking haha)

This got me thinking of the actual story itself. The day "The music died." Rock 'N Roll hit a all-time low when Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper, and Buddy Holly chose to fly in a snow/ice storm after the Winter Dance Party in 1959 I think the year was. What a tragedy. Pure tragedy.

Don McLean wrote the song, "Ms.American Pie" for this actual event. I think I'm going to DL this right now

ahhhhh , i re-live this every day living in buddys home town buddy took rock n roll to another level for sure,, BUT lou diamond phillips will always be Chavez "Chivato" in young guns..but , lots of the music did die with buddy , and SRV , jim croce... ect...

BTW,,if you watch the Buddy Holly story with gary busey.. that movie was alot of hogwash,,gary was great !! but .. buddy and Jerry Allison, the drummer never had a fight over the "darkmeat",, they left out Sullivan completley..Norman Pettys studio was left out .. Lubbock aint got no mountains,, anywhere!!! i work next to the bus station.. no hills..

I'm not good with names but doesn't Sullivan have a resturant called "Heads-up" I guess it signifies the coin toss that saved his life.

i think your thinking of waylon jennings,, that joke haunted him until his death a few years ago.. waylon was playing bass with buddy in the last days,, they shared that joke and waylon tossed a coin ,, buddy won the rigged coin toss,, and the rest is history,, waylon basically gave his airplane seat up so buddy didnt have to spend another cold night in a broke down buss.... i think richie was bad sick and they were trying to get him to the next town to see a doctor..or was it the the The Big Bopper that was sick??? day the music died is a very deep song..

You're right, nice call. In the Valens story, Ritchie was the one that had a cold, but I believe The Big Bopper was deathly ill, and like you said was in some serious trouble and was being rushed to a hospital. It's amazing how one era transforms into another..

I love both of those movies. The ONLY movie where Busey didn't just freak me out... Between him and the Baldwin brothers it's like Creepshow...

I heard that the Big Bopper's kid was having his body exumed because there's a theory (how new I don't know) that a gun went off in the plane, causing the crash. I never heard the outcome. I think that was about a month ago.
American Pie is way over rated in my opinion. I've never 'gotten' why people dig it so much.

No matter how many times I've seen this movie (and I've seen it a LOT), I still cry at the end when Richie's mother hears the radio program and cries out "Ohhh my Ritchie!!" And I am not even really much of a movie-crier, either. Yet, it fuckin' kills me every time.

It is a great movie and they were all great musicians. I was living out in Odessa when this all happened. I was a little girl but I can remember how terrible it was the day it all happened. It was very sad. I thought the guy that played Richie's brother did a great job too. I can't remember his name. Funny how you never see any of those people any more. They were all great actors.

There is a great book out there that I found in the library about the final Winter Dance Party tour and the crash. I believe it is called The Day the Music Died. A really good read and if you are interested sheds alot of light on the final days and the crash.

I did not know him. I lived across town and went to Odessa High School. My Uncle lived in the Permian district and his kids went there. My Uncle knew Mr. Miles. He used to come to our house and tell us the stories about what was going on at Permian.

Oh yes I met Larry Gatlin lots of times. His brothers Rudy and Steve played football at OHS with my brother. I still have a picture of the football team with both of them in it. It is so funny to see them now.

Oh wow, that is so neat that you knew them way back when. I recently listened to a new interview with Larry and he was talking about his friendship with Johnny Cash, both of them were recovering alcoholics. Larry's voice is still very beautiful. Neat Sassie!!!!

HAHAHA!! *high fivin Larry* God, I love that movie!! My roommates and I used to rent that in college and we would each take a character and recited the whole damn movie. I have Chavez!!

I was in the 2nd grade then and would always watch Dick Clark's Bandstand when I got home from school.

In the middle of the show Dick Clark came on and read the wire. He cried.
