Actually it's called "Tears in Heaven" but that's one that gets to me every time too.

There's only 4 on that list that I've heard of. :?

Horrendous song, just Gawdawfull.
Appreciate the sentiment but it was Clapton in full shark jump sellout mode.

Jesus JoePa...Lighten up a bit! I don't particularly care for the song either. That said, it's a tough song to criticize, given why it was written! I can tell you as a father of a little boy, it's defintiely a VERY sad song...sellout mode, or not!

John from Boston

I can't. I be inclined to agree, John (Where ya been, Enigman?) but the damn thing shows up on the Rush sdtk, COMPLETELY out of context.

Incidentally, I was thinking about the harshness of my initial post on the song on the way in here and damn what that must've felt like when that accident happened. I don't know how Clapton got through that and I think it sent him spiraling into COMPLETE booze addiction which he overcame.

Personally I think some of the epic tearjerking Tomes Lar has penned in homage to our own tragic Carlittoh@@k are some of the most gutwrenching things I've ever come across.

silverblue wrote:The saddest song I can think of is one that was on the radio around 1978 by Elvis Presley - can't think of the title exactly, maybe, "I will leave you softly". The story I heard about it was that a husband was dying & he was writing this to his wife who was by his bedside sleeping..."I will leave you softly, for my heart would break, if you should wake and see me go...." I don't think I can ever listen to it again, because it always choked me up back then.

Do you mean 'Softly as I leave you' by Matt Monro?

Here's one of the saddest/most angry songs Ive ever heard. I think part of it is the way the guy sings it too.

http://media.putfile.com/Evergrey---whe ... ls-go-down

WHEN THE WALLS GO DOWN

Lord, if you don't help me I can't get through this.
I can't...
Lord, I'm too old for games,
Foolish wisdom...
And I'm tired of rhetoric, meaningless rhetoric that never changes things...
Lord, just help me,
Just help me...

I was feeling god's pain and I've never had anything that's been any worth to god,
In my fifty years that wasn't born in agony, never, never...
Dead empty...
And I know that sermons won't do it,
I know that revelation won't do it,
Covenant won't do it,
I know now, oh my god do I know it...

Until I'm in agony,
Until I'm in anguish over it,
I'm preaching sermons...
Oh god...

I broke down and I wept and I mourned,
Does it matter to you at all?
I can't handle this,
I can barely make it into here...

Little by little you're losing me, you're almost caught...
Love with Christ.
People I know that were my friends,
I've seen them go one by one, some of my closest friends...

You're changing from what you were,
You're changing,
Little by little somethings happening to you...
Will he bring you to your knees?
That's all the devil wants to do take the fight out of you, and kill it,
So you won't in prayer anymore,
So you won't weep before god anymore,
Go to hell,
No weeping, not another pray, it's all ruined, no nothing
This is life and death - and the walls go down and ruin sets in...

Where's the tears?
Where's the mourning?
Where's the confessing?
The love of Christ?

The agony of god's heart...
We... have sinned!

For me it would be Freddie Mercury singing Who wants to live forever. Next would be Perry with Don't be down on me baby and finally Brad Delp singing and playing the piano on The man I'll never be.

That was Bobby Goldsboro Kimmy.

Here's the house where Honey stayed
Where Honey lived and Honey played
And love grew up............
.........
........................
Honey I miss you
And I'm doing good
I'd love to be with you
If only I could

Thank God that's all I remember of it at the moment. Yeah it was sad, but I got so sick of it at it's height that I couldn't stand to listen to it.

Check out Tom Petty's "Runaway TrainS". It's one of his best. It's more or less mid-tempo, with some really intense lyrics...unbelievable melody. It was written twelve years before Soul Asylum's.

...and I'm depending on time
To get you outta my mind
I guess it's one of those things
You can never explain
Like when an angel cries
Like runaway trains
Like one of those times
That's never the same
Like when something dies
Like runaway trains...

She does not understand
I'm used to being alone
And holding my own hand
I'm stronger than you know...

JoePa, Mark Knopfler has been putting out one unbelievable CD after another for the last ten years. some of the gems...

5:15 AM
A Summer Night Long Ago
The Long Road
Sands of Nevada
I'm the Fool
Irish Boy
Rudiger
Love and Happiness

I'd still love to see him team up with his little bro' again and tour as 'Straits. I've seen him a few times...the guy is vastly underrated as both a performer and a songwriter. No respect! Just like Neal. Well, no-one gets dissed as bad as Neal. The fuckin' guy is flat-out the most diversely talented axeman in history. He probably won't get the love he desrves until he's touring solo in the 2030's.

This one is in the same vein as Honey for me. I loved it the first time I heard it then it turned to saccharine. Country music does sad and syrupy better than any other genre.

COUNTRY BUMPKIN
Recorded by CAL SMITH

HE WALKED INTO THE BAR AND PLACED HIS LANKY FRAME UPON A TALL BAR STOOL
AND WITH A LONG SOFT SOUTHERN DRAWL HE SAID I'LL TAKE A GLASS OF ANYTHING
THAT'S COOL
A BAR-ROOM GIRL WITH WISE AND KNOWING EYES SLOWLY LOOKED HIM UP AND DOWN
AND SHE THOUGHT I WONDER HOW ON EARTH THIS COUNTRY BUMPKIN FOUND HIS WAY
TO TOWN

(CHORUS 1)
SHE SAID HELLO COUNTRY BUMPKIN. HOW'S THE FROST OUT ON THE PUMPKIN
I'VE SEEN SOME SIGHTS BUT MAN YOU'RE SOMETHIN'
WHERE'D YOU COME FROM COUNTRY BUMPKIN

(VERSE 2)
IT WAS JUST A SHORT YEAR LATER, IN A SWEAT-DRENCHED BED OF JOYFUL TEARS
AND DEATH-LIKE PAIN
INTO THIS WONDROUS WORLD OF MANY WONDERS, ONE MORE WONDER CAME
THAT SAME WOMAN'S FACE WAS WRAPPED UP IN A RAPTURED LOOK OF LOVE AND
TENDERNESS
AS SHE MARVELLED AT THE SOFT AND WARM AND CUDDLY BOY-CHILD FEEDING AT HER
BREAST

(CHORUS 2)
SHE SAID SHE SAID HELLO COUNTRY BUMPKIN. FRESH AS FROST OUT ON THE
PUMPKIN
I'VE SEEN SOME SIGHTS BUT BABE YOU'RE SOMETHIN'
MAMA LOVES HER COUNTRY BUMPKIN

(VERSE 3)
FORTY YEARS OF HARD WORK LATER, IN A SIMPLE QUIET AND PEACEFUL COUNTRY
PLACE
THE HEAVY HAND OF TIME HAD NOT ERASED THE RAPTURED WONDER FROM THE
WOMAN'S FACE
SHE WAS LYING ON HER DEATH BED KNOWING FULLY WELL HER RACE WAS NEARLY RUN
BUT SHE SOFTLY SMILED AND LOOKED INTO THE SAD EYES OF HER HUSBAND AND HER
SON

(CHORUS 3)
AND SHE SAID SO LONG COUNTRY BUMPKIN. THE FROST IS GONE NOW FROM THE
PUMPKIN
I'VE SEEN SOME SIGHTS AND LIFE'S BEEN SOMETHIN'
SEE YOU LATER COUNTRY BUMPKIN

Man, you are so right...my best friend was named John...well, Jeje for short...he took his life 15 years ago, but it's very hard for me to listen to that song to this day...but it's a far better tune than 95% of those on the list. Good call.

Much of that song is sad but the last three verses redeem it...

"There'll be a celebration
When all will be revealed
We'll have a reunion
High on a hill

Dear John, how are you
God knows it's heaven where you are
Find some peace there
May it never end

Dear John, my heart knows
We'll meet again
Dear John I'll see you....
Some day again"

On the other hand, some of the lyrics from one of my earlier selections, "Mother Love" by Queen, are the saddest lyrics I can think of...

I've walked too long in this lonely lane
I've had enough of this same old game
I'm a man of the world, you say that I'm strong
But my heart is heavy and my hope is gone
Out in the city, in the cold world outside
I don't want pity, just a safe place to hide
Mama, please, let me back inside

Very sad lyrics representative of Freddie's state of mind near the time of his death but a reminder to me that there are definitely people out there that have it worse than I do, so I consider myself extremely blessed.

One song that always chokes me up but also makes me feel good at the same time (wierd, eh?)
is Aimee Mann's "Wise Up" from the Magnolia Soundtrack...
Especially when it is played in the movie and all the "characters" are singing along.
What is it about Paul Thomas Anderson movies and the way
he always picks the perfect tunes for his movies.
Call me crazy but Boogie Nights and Magnolia are 2 of my faves all-time.
For totally different reasons, of course

WISE UP
It's not
What you thought
When you first began it
You got
What you want
Now you can hardly stand it though
By now you know
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up.
You're sure
There's a cure
And you have finally found it
You think
One drink
Will shrink you 'til you're underground
And living down
But it's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up.
Prepare a list of what you need
Before you sign away the deed
'Cause it's not going to stop
No, it's not going to stop
'Til you wise up
No, it's not going to stop
'Til you wise up
No, it's not going to stop
So just give up
Welcome to Terminus... You hungry?

I like that song, it's kind of haunting, but good. I hadn't heard it until some friends of ours got married & they gave out cd's as their guest gifts, a compilation of songs that supposedly sum up their relationship, & that's on there. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing, lol.
