LOL, sounds a little too Colors of the Spirit (ish) for me. My least favorite song on TBF.

Get out! Castles Burning? That was the Back Talk of TBF. An absolute stinker...

Ironically enough, my next student today is 16, but she is a Journey fanatic, and she has WYLAW down to a T. Believe it or not, she was a Journey maniac before she started studying with me...how about that?

Actually Castles Burning I can handle. But Colors of the Spirit just doesn't do it for me, I don't think I have actually let that one play thru every second of it. Especially after TNC or Red's (can't remember which) description of it. Can't get it out of my head, all I envision now when I hear it is SP and a bunch of Indians in full dress sitting around the fire passing a peace pipe around.

As for your student, good for her. :) Somebody obviously exposed her to some great music at an early age. 8)

It was nominated because it was the lead single of a reunion album. Now ask yourself why it lost to a song by a band who had been dead for 25 years?

My guess is because Journey was never as famous as The Beatles, more so,Journey was constantly bashed by the media, while The Beatles were considered demi-gods.
The fact that The Beatles won the Grammy that year has nothing to do with the quality of their song."Free as a Bird" was a leftover that can't be compared to WYLAW.

Of course,I'm not a Beatles fan,but I sure can make a difference between a shitty song and a gem. :)

"Free As A Bird" is an excellent song and I am surprised to hear you go as far as saying it is shitty! I can understand people not liking The Beatles but to go that far? It was the first song Paul, George, and Ringo recorded without John Lennon present and it has a lot of history. I’d like to see another band take a horrible sounding demo, that just had just piano and voice on it, from the early 1980 and remaster and make it into something magical. Not to mention the fact the lead singer of that song couldn’t touch up his vocals because he had been dead for 16 years!

I'm sorry,CR,but that song does nothing for me.I remember perfectly hearing it in 1997 and my first word about it was "dull".
No disrespect to The Beatles.I agree the song itself has an historical/sentimental value and such, but it didn't deserve a Grammy.JMO.

I like the title, "Winds of Freedom"=excellent. I can picture a video, no not powerpoint slideshow like they had during the last concert=ugh. They need a really famous actress to show off or model. Maybe Giselle, someone like that and JSS is a swashbuckler (are you with me ladies? :P) and the other guys are...well you get the idea. Can't wait to hear it!!! Exciting.

Easy...
Great sound quality, historical significance and an extrordinary accomplishment do not nessecarily
make a song "great". Why is it so unfathomable for someone to think a Beatles tune is "shitty"???
Gee, I think just about everything The Doors and Led Zepplin put out was shitty...
Does that make me a bad person? No, just makes me someone with different tastes.

BTW, just about everything you said, in regards to why 'Free as a Bird' is a "great song", pretty
much sums up why it got the Grammy nod that it did. It was the 'sentimental' favorite but,
to some folks (myself included) not the better song.

I guess it's a matter of tastes, but damn...that song is majestic to my ears.

Second that Shania- WYLAW is the best ballad that they ever wrote IMO. It's a shame that it didn't win the grammy.

Okay the pilgrims sailed on ships to get to Jamestown, so it could be them on the boat and the things that went on during that long horrible voyage. Many of the people died because of lack of sanitary conditions, lack of Vitamin C., clean water, food....pirates........just a daydream....

A swashbuckler is a heroic pirate, basically.

I'd love for this song to be some kind of epic sailing adventure shanty.

This song needs to channel the early progressive albums, One More, Colors of the Spirit, Higher Place, Daydream, and Winds of March and funnel the juicy epic mastery into one delicious smoothie of kick-ass rock.

As long as they NEVER record ANYTHING even remotely resembling "Positive Touch",
I think we will be G-T-G

I love the moody, dramatic stuff like Winds/March, Destiny, M/F, Troubled Child...
We need something like that on the next album.

I can agree with that, I was just coming to the defense of a song that I think is great just like Shania did when Red13 said something about WYLAW. I never said she was a bad person for not liking the song. I was just defending the importance and significance of it, maybe the exclamation points I used conveyed the wrong message.

To other folks, probably no one else on this board though, “Free as a Bird” is the better song that deserved the Grammy. You see it works both ways. I know my views will be in the minority but that shouldn’t be a reason not to post my thoughts since it was brought up. BTW I think WYLAW is Journey’s ultimate ballad and it is one of my favorite songs, I just wouldn’t choose it over The Beatles.
