OT - Trouble In Evanescence

Postby Greg » Tue May 08, 2007 2:57 am

I know a lot of you probably don't care for Evanescence, but reading the news off of the main page has got me worried about this group. Although I usually listen to bands like Journey, Evanescence is one of my favorite new rock groups. I don't know if Amy Lee is being a witch with a capital 'B', but it appears something isn't right. they have had two guitar plays to quit, a bassist, and now their drummer. I really hope this doesn't spell the end for this band, because I really dig the music they put out.

Makes me also appreciate the fact that even though Journey with Steve Perry had problems, that they stayed together as long as they had before splitting.

Argh... yeah.. they're one of my favorites as well. It could be 1001 reasons tho, but high odds go to 'artistic differences'.

oh dear.

I think she might be a top leading female rock vocalist. they are awesome live.

maybe they have some of the troubles that No Doubt had? friends--girl lead gets more promo-etc.

I love to see a duet with Jeff and Amy. hard rock, screaming stuff. wow. wouldn't that be a show if they opened for Journey 2008? get both generations there.

She is one of the most talented female vocalists out right now. Her voice is instantly recognizable, and she can flat wail.

She's this generation's Ann Wilson (the hot one from Heart, not the country singer). If you google her, though, it's apparent she has a reputation as a Major Bitch Who Has To Have Her Way All The Time.

You should rename this post "Trouble in Trag". ;)
When I read the news this morning I thought that it was about Trag and just the names were changed to protect the innocent.
Bands breaking up sucks. Sometimes it works out better, I mean hell, there's no more Creed!

;)

Ann Wilson's a stretch. This singer tends to have the same sound all the time (at least with the 4 tracks I've heard). Ann can blow and sing anything. But yeah, I guess I can see the parallels. (hard rock chick, etc.). Hope they find other players.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Amy Lee is definitely one of the best female rock vocalist to come out of the "new rock" era. I just hope she doesn't do what Gwen Stefani did and start making hip hop type of records! I loved No Doubt, and will admit that some of Gwen's solo songs can be catchy, but I just don't get into that style of music.

If Amy Lee goes solo, I just hope she keeps the hard rock edge! But man, I love Evanescence!

I loved No Doubt but I think Gwen Stefani on her own sucks big time. She has become someone who does what the record company tells her to do. No Doubt was much better IMHO.

I keep hearing reports that Amy uses a lot of technical assistance to sing...including live. I don't hear it but I do think the touring has been unkind to her voice. Ann Wilson is a HUGE stretch. I love Amy's vocals but I do not think they are very strong. In fact, I think she is much better suited to the soft, moody stuff the band did before Fallen (or even Origin). In studio she sounds strong, but live she has always struggled when Rockin'. For the Fallen tour you could hear the change in HOW she sang over the years of that tour. But she is a good frontperson so the singing doesn't always matter.

When I saw an early show for this tour I got the impression that it has already become the Amy Lee show. The band doesn't do anything on stage but play. This was one of the first shows with the new bassist. But Terry and John seemed to remain in the background. I like Rocky a lot and he has been in "the band" longer than the rest so it is shame he is out.

I expect we will see a revolving lineup of musicians making this the Amy Lee Band (which it appears to already be).

Amy (Coverdale) Lee??
Do you agree that 50% of Evanescence was lost when Ben Moody left? Or is the last album better than I thought?

Theyre still good, just not AS good as they used to be.The new albums gets old too fast though.
You think Coverdale was bad, you dont have anything to compare to Yngwie.
He has gone through 8 singers(Startin off with JSS) , 5 drummers , 5 keyboard players, 6 bass players during 12 albums!
Jeff can enlighten you about how fun it is to work with(FOR) Yngwie .

Well, Reznor has done it with NIN...
And really, are their many people buying the albums or
going to the shows because they are HUGE Terry Balsamo fans or Rocky fans
or HUGE LeCompt fans? Absolutely not. Amy Lee, like it or not, IS Evanescence.
I don't much care for this band but admire Lee's vocal prowess.
She can definitely sing but it's just not my cup of tea.

Yes but at least he was a "solo" artist with hired guys, not a controlling band member running off or firing guys...or maybe WS always was DC's property...
Back to the band of topic, those guys have left one by one until she's gotten control of the band name almost by default, it appears anyway.

Well I really liked Fallen and could listen to every single song. The Open Door has some great songs, but I skip over some on that one. I will listen to songs like Even in Death or October, but that's about it as far as the "demo" stuff.

Amy Lee is Evanescence, but I agree that Ben Moody contributed a lot to helping the band get bigger. But, this could be the modern day Whitesnake!

Evanescence was Ben and Amy. David Hodges was a part of the beginning but really ALL the other players have been hired hands.

Amy likely gained control as soon as Ben quit.

Ben is a fine artist with more of a pop ear (which seems unusual). He created their commercial sound. I didn't know what to think about him leaving since I liked that commercial sound, but when I learned Amy wanted to be able to deviate from that commercial sound more I thought that was a plus. I enjoy the new CD but it has a "samey" feel which means it starts to get old. I lived with Fallen constantly for at least 6 months. And I enjoy their earlier work even more than Fallen.

Amy is a strong artist, has good vocals and good stage performance. But she is essentially a solo act now.

I always thought the problem with that band was that Ben Moody was fucking Amy Lee. *trust me* when band members fuck (hopefully members of the oposite sex, this isn't culture club!), bad things happen. Especially when the guitarist of a band schtups the female singer. Been there, done that....not good results! What usually happens, is that if the band doesn't fall apart when the female singer decides she no longer wants to fuck the guitarist...it does fall apart when she bangs the drummer and/or bassist.

So having said all of that...I suspect that with Ben out of the picture, she moved onto other members of the band...and before long, she had no one left to plug up her emptiness...and she turned on them....and they all ran away...because female lead singers are psychotic bitches that need to be rounded up like a herd of cattle and tossed off a very high cliff.

It's a very common tale...that could have all been avoided if the stupid guitarist kept his rope dry.

Don't agree. Fleetwood Mac entangled the life of the band for quite awhile with all different shapes and hook ups and still made it work. Yes, it can be a problem and has been a problem but not all the time.

Fleetwood Mac is about the worst example you could possibly use. Hookups literally destroyed that band for 15-20 years....I'm not talking about getting past your differences and ironing the whole "You fucked him and I hated you for it" crap, that you're able to look past 20 years down the line.

I'm refering to the here and now that prevents musicians from getting on in a musical context...There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Mac could have continued on through the late 70s and early 80s if it wasn't for the relationship troubles it had. The one album they recorded in the 80s was done so very carefully because wounds were still new...and the fact of the matter is that the band as a whole, is still not together right now. They will say so and so wants to be a housewife or stay home....but read between the lines. That band was fucked from the minute Lindsay Buckingham said "Hey, let's bring in my girlfriend"....

SG, the only problem with your scenario is that Ben and Amy had quit the personal relationship before they even recorded Fallen....

Yeah, I'm aware of that...I still submit, however, that the 'ex' in their relationship was enough to destroy any hope for musical longetivity...It's an absolutely disastrous dynamic to be in a band with someone you are *or* were fucking...it only leads to one thing. There isn't a single example of a band that actually stayed intact with that dynamic. Fleetwood Mac, Heart, Ev, it doesn't matter....

Well who knows. Maybe Ben Moody might be persuaded to come back into the fold. Sometimes being away for awhile from a person you've had "relations" with helps. Maybe there has been enough time passed that they can reconcile their differences and move on making music together.
