OT: Steve Vai & Virgil Donati

Postby Melissa » Thu May 31, 2007 4:32 am

Hubby is a big Steve Vai fan & this weekend he was talking to one of our neighbors about music, etc., and the neighbor brought over a Steve Vai DVD. I didn't pay much attention to it but finally looked at it when he was watching it, & there's Virgil Donati on the drums. Has he always been the drummer for Steve Vai's band? And is that what he was doing before Soul Sirkus?

(Sorry for the OT, work is slow...)

He hasn't ALWAYS been the drummer but for the past I wanna say 3 Vai tours..yes. The tour before Soul SirkUS...he was behind the kit...THAT much I know. :-)

Hi Melissa, I know he has played with Vai for quite a while, Liam is most likely correct about the time frame.

I love love love that DVD! Vai is awwesome and so is Virgil, he's more like Smitty than any drummer I've ever seen..arms and legs flying everywhere. And what a sweet man he is too..sure do miss the SS days.

Don't forget Ring of Fire, ex Yngwie Malmsteen vocalist Mark Boals band with Tony Macalpine on guitar and Phillip Bynoe on bass (other Vai alumni). Some great tunes and playing from Donati on the band's four albums released between 2000 and 2004.
