MTV|VH1 Unplugged: Attention Journey

Postby Jeremey » Fri Jun 01, 2007 10:21 pm

How fucking cool would it be to see an acoustic set with these guys on this new show? What a great way for the band to introduce their new lineup to the general public (separate from last year's "opener" tour w/DL), and capitalize on the younger generation's embracing of hits like "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Separate Ways." Funny thing is, after listening to Deen's acoustic version of DSB a week ago, I thought, damn, I wish that "Unplugged" show was still around, thinking about what it did for Clapton & "Layla" and Stewart with "Have I Told You Lately," both acoustic covers of previously released material. Then I see that press release this morning.

I'm sure it's too late for these guys to start doing something this year, but it'd be great to get something like that out there before next summer's tour. Can you imagine a roadhouse acoustic version of "Lovin Touchin" or a string quartet sitting in with the band on "Open Arms?" That'd be cool as shit.

Just thinking out loud of course!

I like the idea!!! The could always do something like that for VH1 Classic. They had Shaw Blades on for a couple of acoustic tunes. Also a performance on next years VH1 Rock Honors would make a lot of sense as well.

Great idea - Rock Honors is a great forum for them, though I'd like to see a reclusive portuguese onstage with them if that ever happened!

Would be terrific if they could get on, but a couple factors including but not limited to, the band's reluctance to do stuff like that and the networks maybe telling them "get perry back and we'll have you" would render me shocked if it happened.

Something the band/management SHOULD look into, though. Why the shit not?

Well, Good Morning America had them on with Augeri, so who knows. Of course, the VH1 audience would obviously be more prone to lean towards wanting the classic lineup onboard but at least there's some precedent to having a Perry-less Journey being on a nationwide program like that.

Yea, 8 years w/ Augeri and really only that, the Direct TV Concert, and the live videos of Higher Place and Faith In The Heartland on VH1 Classic are the ONLY mainstream media things they did.

They were too content be unrisky then....maybe w/ JSS being an agressive "go-getter" type that can change.

I agree Red but it's gonna depend largely on how far and how fast they let Jeff run with this torch he's carrying now.

Journey should do both projects next year(Unplugged & VH1 Honors),both are great ways of promoting their new blood and their name.

I don't get this, tho ...Quoting Red13:"the band's reluctance to do stuff like that" :?: Why would they be reluctant now?I thought they avoided live televised events because they had a *cough-SA-cough* problem. They are ok now, great live sound and all.

The reasons must be not related to their wishes.

Wasn't the unplugged version of "Liberty" done for VH1 Classic, the one with REO Speedwagon & Styx?

Yea, let him be a TRUE front man in every sense. Look how he won all these Efans over online with his grassroots internet kind of meet-the-fans campaign. He was interacting w/ fans in 4 different places online, The guy has charisma. Exploit it.

Also, Augeri didn't have the vocal problems that kept him from doing live media singing events until at earliest 2003 and even then it was evidently only sporadic....'98-'02 they coulda done the shit but just didn't.
Though a lot say the morning show performance on the Arrival tour was subpar.

that's where I saw it. As a side note - the vocals by SA were horrible in that song. JMO

I didn't think they were all that bad. Certainly not great, but bearable for me, anyway. What did bug me was that he kept messing up the lyrics.

They should do both show's. The CBS ealy show with SA was a disaster. It was like he was scared to speak. Damn he was the frontman, he should have stepped up.

Probably why they never did more of those type of things back then.

Now way JSS would stand up there like a girl and act afraid.

Jeff has to be the one that is constantly in the bands' ears going "come on guys we gotta get out there in the public eye and ram ourselves down their throats until Journey becomes a household name again" Otherwise I see Azoff just sitting on his ass collecting his tour royalties like he did for the past 8 years.

Liberty's perry's studio vocal masterpiece, too. Careful when comparing a live Augeri version of that to the Frontiers era one.

Couldn't agree more.

And he shouldn't get discouraged if he can't get them off their asses right away, either...they're used to coasting and getting their healthy touring coin and resting for periods so there'll likely be a little resistance there.

Just gotta stay ON Schon/Cain.

This has been the fans' wish as long as I've been on the 'net. I remember seeing on the old, old bulletin board 9 or so years ago. This would be SO cool for the current fans, and possibly, bring along some new ones.

Here's the deal. With Irving holding the hand he's got, there shouldn't be anything he can't make happen. He can easily tell Viacom "You give me a Journey Unplugged on VH1-Classic or you don't get the Linkin Park acoustic set for MTV" - Or substitute LP for any other hot band right now, I don't know who the hell he manages...The thing is, he's got to want to make it happen. For all the mud that's been slung his way over the past 3 years, he REMAINS the man that can put things together for this band, if he believes in them.

At the time of Andrew's Journey interviews it sounded as if Azoff was more excited about the band than he's been in years. Maybe now that they have a real singer and showman out front again he'll have more belief in the possibilties. Neal was talking about doing TV in the interview too.

Unless something has changed that we don't know about I don't see any reason for them to have lost that excitement.

You're exactly right. I think Jeff would be a huge hit on shows like GMA and the VH1 shows. I hope they're all, meaning all the band and management, on the same page about it. I know Neal and Jeff are, but Jon didn't seem as confident and upbeat as the other guys. He seemed to come around more though as they toured together more.

Honest truth. No fan of Azoff here. For a vet band like Journey. I would rather have them with someone who is honored to be working with them and is a go getter. Azoff has too much on his plate to care. Just don't see him caring about new music, only who to package them with next summer on tour to maximize profits. Do I know that for sure? Of course not. But I know his talent roster and that is what I think.

He just signed Neil Diamond and is already seeing dollar signs for the next tour of swooning grandmoms.

Just my opinion - don't get mad. Could be wrong.

Sounds cool! Only one problem here. I don't get VH1 on TV. I say just get something out on the web via YouTube or something. The word will get out..
