Help me understand this...

I've got the video for the "Lights" performance. I've always rather enjoyed it though it was obvious the crowd wasn't into it.

The crowd was made up of 500,000 stoned, flea-infested Deadheads who were there to see the Grateful Dead. They were clueless as to who Journey were which is why it seems the crowd wasn't into it. Cyndy and I were there and had to "de-flea" ourselves after the show.

Geddy Lee's voice never really appealed to me, sorry, so I'm only familiar with the most commercial stuff. He had an 'unusual' voice, I would say. Unique, even.

Here's a live cut from 1976...It isn't the entire song but the portion that most people have heard on the radio. The vocals don't start until over 4 minutes into the 6+ minute tune...

Here's basically the same song from "Rush in Rio", which is from 2003. Geddy still has trouble with the song even though it's obviously lower.

dave, i like the second one best!! the first one was much cooler,, but i love the heavy guitar tone of the second,, funny, i thought the vocals were spot on both songs.. really enjoyed that second one,, i have never youtube'd rush.. good stuff..Time Stands Still is one of my fav top 20 songs of all time,, the lyrics are beyond amazing on that one..

Unlike most drummers who have all that stuff for show, Neil actually USES them.

I've covered a lot of Van Hagar, Sass Jordan, Zeppelin, and Boston in my cover bands. The thing is, I could nail them in their original key in a studio setting, or if I did a gig every couple of weeks, but when I've had semi-regular work, I've had to make some adjustments. It can really piss of a guitarist - it's a lot harder for them to tone down a half step than it is for a pianist or a bassist. Obviously, the drummer is not affected by that kind of move. I was too stubborn for a long time, blew out my voice, and couldn't sing - let alone speak in anything other than a whisper - for more than a year. I learned my lesson. Most people at the gigs couldn't tell that "Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do) was knocked down a half step; they were just thrilled that someone had the balls to cover it. Granted, I struggled with some of that material sometimes, but we got a lot of good crowds, since everyone else was playing Green Day, Nirvana, and other banal shit.

And I'm so glad you posted me that link - I really loved seeing that kit. It's huge.
And because I don't really 'get' Lee's voice, I forget what a brilliant drummer that guy is.

quick fix is to have 2 guitars, one in standard, one in Eb.. or just tune it on stage,, you can be there in 25 seconds , then another 25 seconds pulling and stretching to keep in tune,, however, thats with strats and pauls.. if your talking about band members with wham bars then YES,, pain in the buttocks,, have to adjust the springs in the back until the bar floats,, then tune,, then adjust for another 2-3 hours,, its like baking a pie really...
