Terrible vocals, and horrendous musicianship - almost as crappy as Pearl Jam and Nirvana, but at least those bands had something to say about the world, whether or not the delivery is flawed. One of my students, who also takes guitar lessons, asked his teacher to teach him a couple of Green Day songs, and the teacher begrudgingly taught him how to play both of them in a half an hour...at which point Scotty decided the music was far too simplistic and unchallenging. THEY HAVE NO TALENT. One of the worst bands ever...and EOTT is a CLASSIC.
(*sigh) I really don't wanna argue this, cause I don't really like Green Day THAT much...they ARE three chord monsters, and yes, Billy Joe's "vocal stylings" (what with the fake brit and all) do sorta annoy me (allthough, I will say THEY never lip synched anything!) BUT...
You can't guage the worth of a song by how complex it is. If so, YES and DREAM THEATRE would probably be hailed as the greatest rock bands ever (here's a hint...THEY AIN'T!!!) "Johnny B Goode" is a terribly easy song to play...so is "Ring of Fire" and " I Saw Her Standing There" and hell, FREE BIRD and PARANOID for that matter. (And to hit a little closer to home, ANY WAY YOU WANT IT was one of the first songs I ever learned on guitar- not the solo, mind you, just the progression) Because they're simple chord progressions that are to easy play does that make them lesser pieces of art? No, it doesn't. Sometimes, the inherant beauty of a song is IN the simplicity...often times that's what captures an audience's imagination and pulls them in. Me, I'd rather listen to AMERICAN IDIOT over ANYTHING a band like Dream Theatre EVER did! I can't stand that masterbatory crap. I respect those guys as musicians, but to quote Gene SImmons "I think car crashes are neat, too...but you can't tap your foot to them". As for EOTT, it's a catchy little tune, as were some of Survivor's other songs.( I was also partial to CAUGHT IN THE GAME, myself) But it's hardly some untouchable icon that no one DARE to mock! Come on guys...a little perspective...
Don't get me wrong...I agree that GREEN DAY is pretty light weight as well. Yeah, they've managed to carve out a nice little career for themselves for the better part of fifteen years (no small feat in today's music biz) but as punk bands go, they're pretty lame. A band like the Clash or the Ramones would've buried those guys...
