Journey’s new mantra? Disposable singers!

Get tired of them, sick of the same-old, don’t like the way they smile…..heck, just get rid of them.

What irks me the most (beside treating JSS like they did) is the total disregard to the long-time fans and new fans. Think about that one a little…..

This “calculated’ decision shows only one motive. Stay the course…..hold on to the 80’s and milk it for all it’s worth.

As fan from the Infinity days, here’s what I feel now…

- Journey is no longer a consolidated band
- They will not, or won’t ever be a driving force in music going forward
- Thank god for the Escape Live DVD
- The typical concert goer will be reduced to a “hey guys, 24 is a re-run tonight, but that band that plays DSB from the Sopranos is playing tonight….wanna see them?”
- And last, but not least….If they ever do the Hall Of Fame (highly doubt it now)….I seriously hope SP doesn’t show. Believe me, it kills me to say this….as I’m a HUGE Perry fan.

And of course, from experience, the band knows that a good percentage of MR.com folks will get over the change and start wondering what the new singer sounds like. I can just hear it now….”well, SA sang it better on the chorus section”….”he kinda sounds more of a journey singer, but no Perry”….”the ballads will suit him perfectly….but he lacks on the rockers”…”JSS had a way better stage presence”

Sorry for my rant…but it pains me the way this band is conducting itself.

I guess they should just hire a singer, do a tour, then put him on the shelf. Then hire another singer for the next tour and so forth.

Alright, as awful as this situation is, and as pissed off as I am at the way they did in Jeff, trust me when I tell you...the new singer does Perry better than Steve himself could these days, is 20 years younger, and is a helluva guy to boot. Give him a chance once the dust has settled.

i'm really just a fan of the Journey/Perry era....

no interest after, just a connection/bond from the past...

Yeah, but not everyone wants to see someone who "does Perry better than Perry himself." Bands can change singers and still succeed, look at AC/DC, Genesis, Van Halen, Toto, Marillion, etc. The new singers could sing the old stuff, but also gave the band a distinct voice with which to go forward.

I mean, Brian Johnson wasn't Bon Scott, but he succeeded because he didn't try to be. Same with Collins in Genesis, Hogarth in Marillion (sorry I'm kind of a prog junkie) or Dio in Sabbath.

Not everyone agreed about JSS's ability to sing some of the old songs, but almost everyone was excited about what he would bring to the table creatively for Journey's next album, and seemed willing to accept Jeff as the voice of Journey circa 21st century once they had some new material based around his voice.

Jeremy is a great guy and very good at what he does, but his involvement is not going to get anyone excited about future Journey projects (especially with what we know about how Neal & Jon control the creative process), it is simply a way to keep the dirty dozen alive for the casual fans who keep paying money to see them.

I have no problem with tribute bands, I've seen some good ones, some bad ones, and even played a few gigs in one, but to me, what differentiates the "real" Journey from Frontiers or any other tribute act, is the idea that "real" Journey is a band still moving forward, progressing musically and continuing to write and release new music. With JSS they were a viable band, with a Perry clone, they're a very, very good tribute act. They will put on a great show and someone like Jeremy will do his job of sounding just like Steve Perry, I don't doubt that, but they will no longer be moving forward, and that is why I'm having a hard time with this.

(And Jeremy, if you're reading this, I do hope you understand we're not ragging on you, you fucking rock, man ...we just don't want you screwed over like your predecessors)

Exactly! And that's what I was digging about Journey with Jeff. He wasn't trying to replace Perry or Augeri and he wasn't doing an imitation of anything. He was being Jeff. You CAN'T replace Perry (anymore than you can "replace" singers in other bands) and if I want to hear Perry-Journey, I will put in a god damned CD. I was looking forward to the new stuff with Jeff. As with any band, if you hire a new guy, you can't rely just on all the old stuff. You can still play it but you better come up with something new.

I Honestly think they just got scared ...simple as that sure Jeff pumped some new needed blood intro the group,but if they were thinking on moving away from the "Journey Sound" they thought twice ...and got scared they must figure there sticking to what they know....and Jeff wasn't that sound...so they ran.
