WOW......shocked....

Postby journeyinto2001 » Tue Jun 19, 2007 3:48 am

I haven't been on the boards for a while and thus was shocked to find out that Jeff had been nixed already, especially in light of that we had heard about the band working on a new album. My guess is that they got into the studio and with Jeff, the sound just wasn't reminiscent of what has made Journey so successful over the years. I thought Jeff sounded incredible live but was never sure about him "fitting" the Journey formula in studio with new material.

To be honest, my enthusiasm for Journey has steadily dropped since the end of the Augeri era, with ANOTHER lead singer change. They couldn't break through with Augeri and I believe that he "fit" the Journey formula very well, MINUS recurring serious voice/throat issues. I didn't think they would be able to break through with Jeff any better than they did with Augeri.

I personally think the band is on it's last legs and they should kiss his ass bigtime and recruit Perry back in OR it's time to call it quits.

Anyone else agree?

Good post. I agree...Jeff just doesn't "sound like Journey" to me, whereas Augeri did (not a clone, but similar enough). Obviously Augeri didn't have a strong enough voice to handle the constant touring though, so what are you going to do?

If Jon and/or Neal didn't like the sound of the band with Jeff, that's their right. Frankly, I didn't like it either. The only problems I have with not sticking with Jeff are (1) Naming him the permanent singer aand then firing him a few months later was not a bright move, and (2) if the way they told him (or didn't tell him) that he was out was anything like the the stories that are circulating, then that just sucks.

And yeah...I think the band is dead.

i havent heard of any studio time.. however , my guess would be that jeff and the other 2 got togehter for some minor writing and the 2 discovered that they were now, in 2007, out of their league with jeff running the stage..

I don't think anyone's ever not been agreement on that. Journey fans are Journey fans because of Perry, so I can't believe anyone would argue that the band shouldn't have him as their lead. But I think it's pretty clear now he's not going back, so woulda coulda shoulda... it's over. Whether they call it quits or not, who knows. I'm sure they don't plan to but I think it may happen by default.

Getting themselves out there with DL last summer let the casual fans know "hey, Journey is still around..." But now, they've axed not one but two singers within a year's time (man, that's fucked up when put that way!) and have to find a new one. So now the longer they stay away the more likely the general pop will forget/care less. They can't ride the Sopranos train forever. Not to mention they will come back, get some attention, maybe be interviewed about their newest singer change, and again the casual fans will go "oh, are they back? did Steve Perry come back? No? Oh, well... maybe we'll go then... which day at the fair are they playing?"

No studio time, no serious writing time was spent from what I gather. It's a case of- we'll never know what could have been. Thanks Neal and Jon for the tease.
Until we meet again, may God

No, words from someone who's a very casual Journey fan at best. I come here only when it gets interesting.

Still, Jeff Scott Soto is not *all that*... and my assessment is more spot on than the worshipers.

He was never a million seller, but defeinitely one of the best voices in the business.

It's not so much that, it was the way his firing was handled...very underhanded to someone who deserved better.

I turn that "puh-leeze" back on you...that show is a hack-job of a joke...some decent singers make thier way to the other side, Clarkson & Underwood have great voices, but Jeff Scott Soto is a seasoned professional with a long track record of great music...big, big difference.

No, your assessment is your opinion, which you are more than entitled to.

JSS is a world-class vocalist with a broad, expressive range. He's not the greatest singer to ever walk the earth, but he's damn good and any band, even Journey, would be lucky to have him.

While I agree with you on Perry's voice, Soto's alot more than a good singer, you've obviously never seen him live.

I think Soto has a great voice, gave Journey a chance to ramp it up and get out of Perry's shadow. BUT.....THAT is not my problem. Neither is the way he was treated. I may not like that - but in the end I do realize it is a business.

My problem is how can I take serious a band who wants a tribute singer to lead them? How can I get others to take them seriously? How do they get critics who they worked hard on for 9 years to take them seriously?

Again, Journey's grassroot promo is GONZO...they don't have a hardcore fanclub left. They'll be opening shows/playing fairs, putting on a good performances for a general audience. I can not see it as being anything else. There are at least 500 of us hardcore that go to multiple shows and bring huge gatherings with us...not to mention the word of mouth help. That is gone. How do they replace that...especially AGAIN...in their 50's?

I think JSS was a great choice, but had they not announced him as their lead singer in December, myself, the Sotoheads and the Augeriheads would not be hating them right now. What they have done cannot be taken seriously.

Its over.

Its ridiculous that the band could not take advantage of the Sopranos momentum, and they have lost all of the Perryheads that jumped back aboard and a lot of the Euro support. They are not a current band.

According to Darwin's Theory of Evolution that only the strong will survive, in part, by the ability to adapt to their environments and with a stronger genetic and hereditary composition,( i.e. with intelligience) and lesser species will die off tells me that your time here will be short. Don't take it personally it's just natural selection. 8)

They're legends - to me - and many other fans HOWEVER the Rock And Roll HOF doesn't seem to think so. How about Neal not making Rolling Stone's top 100 guitarists? Joan Jett did. Joan Jett but NOT the "legend" Neal Schon...?

Neal Schon is in the shadow of Steve Perry. He always will be. Fans always want to defend the industry's snub of him but the fact remains. If they're such legends then the music industry has a funny way of recognizing them.

Easy. We're kind of like hardcore baseball fans. Fans were mad for awhile after the strike but soon came back...and in a big way, taking baseball to new heights (and revenue levels). It took awhile for some of us to get used to Augeri, but I would argue that most did. The same thing was in the process of happening with JSS. I was never enthusiastic about JSS-Jouney, but in the last few days I have been forced to reconsider things a bit, and at least acknowledge JSS's important contribution to the band. Whoever the new singer is, I think most of us will eventually come around. Sadly though, I don't see Journey ever being able to go forward in a new direction (that would appeal to a majority of fans).

Yes I agree Perry has a memorable voice, but so does

Ronnie James Dio - Rainbow /Black Sabbath

David Coverdale Deep Purple/Whitesnake

Ian Gillan Deep- Purple/Gillan Band

Jeff Scott Soto -Talisman/Takara/Eyes/Journey/Human Clay/ The Jeff Scott Soto Band/SkrappMettle..etc, etc,

Robert Plant- Led ZEP

Bon Scott- AC/DC

Jorn Lande- Masterplan/Ark/Allen Lande/Millenium/ Vagabond/ etc etc

Danny Vaughn- Tyketto/Vaughn

Klaus Meine -Scorpions

Each one of these singers brings or has brought something to Rock music. But one thing none of them has ever done is emulate someone else they all have originality in their voice.JSS is one of them and I think a lot of people know that,I saw journey with JSS in March he was fantastic.
No he's not the second messiah or anything like that, but neither is perry or any of the other people on this list, they are just people with a marvelous talent.
