This is what I believe to be happening:
1. Journey website is being redesigned to include Steve Perry
2. Journey is signing with a major label with Steve Perry
3. Journey is taking the year off to write new music and record with Steve Perry
4. Sometime in 2008 you will see a new Journey record with Steve Perry, tour summer of 2008 or 2009 (get tickets early as we all know how these things can go)
I know many many people will not believe any of this will happen, but before you decide for yourself know that Steve Perry has and can still sing, he has been working with vocal coaches and has been much more active in public. Factor that in along with the Sopranos exposure (notice they used Perry's picture) in the press and they did not call him the "former" lead singer of Journey.
Additionally, it is my feeling that this and only this event could have led to JSS's departure. Without Perry in the picture, JSS was the BEST hope for the band and a new direction. I saw them live with JSS and was blown away just as everyone else was. That said, there is no need for a new direction if Perry is to work again.

I think Perry is acutely aware of the fact that he is considered a legendary voice by so many. I also don't think Perry can sing to the level he once did. He has always been a man of immense pride and perfection. If he were to come back and simply not have it, his legend would be forever tarnished (in his mind). I think it makes much more sense for Perry to sit on the sidelines and cash the checks, while everyone else speculates as to whether or not he should dust the cobwebs off of the vocal chords! This is the first of what will probably be many posts, speculating on Perry coming back to Journey. It will all come to an end as soon as Journey announces their next lead singer of the month!

Figure of speech meaning they agreed on the use of the song. Doesn't mean they were ever in the same room together. Kinda like a virtual handshake.

It may not have to "be the level it once was", to you, but that really wasn't my point! I think most Journey fans would be FUCKING ELATED if it were ever announced Perry was rejoining Journey. These guys would make more money than they could ever spend! They could call the U.S. Mint, and start printing very large bills!
My point was and is that I believe. in Perry's mind, he would have to perform at the same level, or somehow feel like he was letting himself and his fans down! I still say there is a less than zero chance that you'll EVER see Perry perform as a member of Journey again!

None of this seems far-fetched to me in the slightest. I mentioned in another post that Jon and Neal sound awfully confident -- even cocky -- in Journey's own press release: Neal even uses a pun in an effort to inject levity onto the news of Jeff's dismisal. From reaction on these boards in the past week, I hardly need to underscore how bizzare that would be unless you've got the ultimate Ace up your sleeve: a few years ago, even a Journey/Perry reunion would have seemed more likely to people in the biz than the Cream reunion, and yet Cream played together again (however briefly).
I also have noticed a certain public "thaw" on Steve P's side toward Neal in particular, and Journey in general. Maybe the DVDs and remasters were cathartic. Who's to say? Dismissing Jeff -- harsh as it was -- could have been one way for Journey to show some "good faith" to Steve and might be an intermediate necessary step to "Open the Door" and build some much-needed trust by sending the message that Steve Perry, even after the past nine years, is STILL "the guy."
Regardless, this scenario is one of the simpler explanations for otherwise strange signals out of the Journey camp and also happens to be TOTALLY consistent with everything Journey's said in public so far. Ockham's Razor, you know...
