Bashing

Postby wildchildtwisted » Tue Jun 19, 2007 2:07 pm

I realize that people are upset with the way Journey handled Jeff. But I'm not sure it honors him very much to bash the band itself. I know people are really upset...but anyone else think some of these threads are going a bit over the top? I'm not happy with the situation either...I don't know, maybe it's just me.

I still love Journey and it's legacy...even though I disagree with them right now.

And now perhaps i will be bashed too....is there a cutoff on it all?

Over the top? Maybe.

Legitimate and necessary? Absolutely.

These are not honest, credible people any more. We, as PAYING CUSTOMERS of their product, have a right and an obligation to let them, and the world, know we are unhappy with their work ethic.

It will continue as long as people are pissed off about the way they run their business. I don't see it stopping any time soon.

I have complained as well, and I agree with you....but I think SOME of the threads go too far and don't honor Jeff at all.

I agree with the initial poster. This JSS thing ranks is the biggest over-reaction in site history and there are many of those.

Agree. Not from an upset over JSS standpoint from a personal attack on Schon and to a lesser extent Cain standpoint.

It isn't just the JSS thing that's in play here. It's several previous decisions by the band that have had new light shed on them by this firing fiasco. Overreaction? If Perry, by some miracle, returns, then you're probably right. Otherwise, no.

Jeff is no longer a member of Journey thanks to the remaining backstabbers currently in the band. I honestly don't feel any bad press or comments directed towards Friga, Fro, Face or Farce have any relevance to Jeff. It logically doesn't add up. Fro could be caught in a San Antonio hotel room with a 13 yr old, a pound and a half of blo and Osama Bin Laden hiding in the bathroom...and Jeff would still be an incomparable stand-up guy.

I strongly disagree with the attempt to scuttle fan reaction to this....I know Andrew wants a certain line not crossed...and I'm willing to play ball....but the fact of the matter is that the band, to quote May, needs to own their poo. They've earned it!!! You're only doing them and yourself a disservice if you don't force them to lie in the bed they've made!

The bottom line is JSS is a great singer, but he wasn't a good fit for Journey. They should have never made him a "permanent" member in the first place. They only alienated more of their fans. "Bad English" was not named "Journey" for a good reason. It's all about the singer. I wouldn't mind if Neal and Jon got together with JSS and formed a band by another name.

IMO, the reason I'm even involved is this:

The removal of JSS and the way it was handled really made me re-evaluate and rethink what has gone on with Journey since 1997. There have been so many empty promises and half-assed moves made by Journey since then. So now I feel, why bother with them?

From what I've read from FANS, JSS was lauded in the job he did, and now he's fired because they're worried about the past catalog?

Journey is afraid of change. Change in their wallets that is.

JSS was too radical of a change in the Journey sound. I think they realized that after making him a member. People on here tend to be ignorant to the fact that this is a business. Journey is a business. Their business was built on the vocal stylings of Steve Perry. To make a radical departure from the sound that made them successful in the first place would be a mistake. They need to bring Herbie back as their manager.

Ok, so say that is true. That's not what most people are complaining about. It's not as much the possibility that they did not want to take the chance on moving forward in a somewhat new direction - it's the way that they have handled the situation and the way that they have treated a very talented and respected member of the music industry (as well as someone who saved their asses on tour).

One mistake is not fixed by making a bigger one later.

I agree with you 100%. Like I said before: "They never should have hired him as a "permanent" member". I knew it wouldn't last. It's all about vocal timbre and range. JSS has a strikingly different vocal range and timbre from the previous two singers that Journey has been "defined" by. I wish JSS the best of luck. I think he will have better success with a solo career anyways. I wouldn't want the job of being another Steve Perry clone.

Personally, I think Jeff did an excellant job of singing the back catalog when I saw them. Was it a true SP rendition, nope - but it wasn't billed to be either.

I guess the problem that I have is, if they had doubts about going a different direction, they shouldn't have made him permanent (as you said). But, to make him permanent, make that commitment to move on, then change their minds without even so much as giving Jeff a chance to discuss it with them? That's piss poor....

Hell, I don't know Jeff that well, but I'd be willing to bet if they'd spoken to him about it, explained the situation and said, "Hey man, we just want to rest on our laurels and not reinvent ourselves.", he would have more than likely stepped down gracefully and this whole fiasco wouldn't have taken place. He's been in the business for years, knows that things change, and has left bands and started bands himself - he's not some new guy that doesn't get it. Bottom line on this is, there's someone (or everyone) in that camp that just doesn't have a clue on how to deal with people properly.

It's that kind of bad business and lack of respect for people that will prevent me from supporting them in the future.
Peace ~
Greg

Yeah. Who knows if the band was divided on the decision, or if it was the management. Hell maybe it was both. Greed unfortunately plays such a big role in the music business.
