I was going back and forth over SP or JSS. If we are talking at this given time and touring......although I love SP's voice and soul to death, being almost 60 I don't think he'd bring the electrifying stage presence JSS does. Then I thought WTF am I thinking, Journey deserves neither one of them! Sorry I am going with none of the above.

Which singer?

Postby sad_Journey_girl » Thu Jun 21, 2007 12:35 am

My gut reaction was, of course, Steve Perry (although I do love JSS as well!). However, your point about Journey deserving NEITHER of them is very well taken, and I agree 100%!

They don't deserve to have another singer.
They've over-drawn from the bank on that issue
and should just file for "Lead-Singer Bankruptcy".

I resent the now ever-trendy tribute label being affixed to Jeremey, too.

Me too. What he did before Journey should have ZERO weight. I only care about what I think he can BRING to Journey. People throw "tribute singer" around as though it's synonymous with being a pedophile or a rapist. Aside from Perry, I think Jeremey is as good a choice as anyone on the planet.

He is a singer period.

I've never heard him referred to dismissively as a "tribute singer" until now.

No shit? My point is.......so fucking what. If Perry had been in a Journey tribute band before he joined would that make the catalog any less great?

SP

That's a fact.

"So what" is right. I never said that is a bad thing. I was replying to this statement:

I resent the now ever-trendy tribute label being affixed to Jeremey, too.

They are in Journey tribute bands, they have been for years, thus, to me they are "tribute singers", whether one thinks that is a good or bad thing is their own personal opinion.

With that said, I've seen and heard Jeremy and Hugo on youtube and I would not be interested in paying to see/hear Journey with either one of these guys on lead vocals. They are both very good singers, but both are Perry impersonators/impressionists and I'm not interested in seeing Journey with an impersonator fronting the band.

Just being honest.

We need to stop living in the past. If Steve Perry wanted to be in Journey, he would be in Journey. Plain and simple. Personally, I think the band should get with another great singer, and form something new. Like they did with Bad English for example.

Kevin Chalfant has always been original. He just happens to sound like Steve Perry. It must be hard for an original singer to have similar vocal characteristics of other famous singers. He just released a 13 song Journey tribute CD. He told me was thinking about starting a Journey tribute band as well. He will probably start being labeled as a SP clone or wannabe now. If Journey wants to stay with the familiar and classic sound, he would be a good fit, in my opinion. Kevin was slated to be their next lead singer in the 90's until Steve Perry decided to reunite and record Trial By Fire. Hmmm. Great timing there Steve Perry.

So, if Jeremey was still in a band doing '80s music by various artists rather than just Journey that would be acceptable? Image

I'm with 13 and SJ on this "tribute singer" label being used as a slam. Is his singing Journey music and sounding a lot like Perry supposed to in some way disqualify him as a singer worthy of singing for Journey? Image I think it's a passive aggressive way of insulting him and completely unfair.

I know everyone is angry right now and some people might even think if Jeremey refuses the offer they'll get Jeff back. I don't think that's going to happen. So if they're intent on having another singer why shouldn't Jeremey get a shot at it? Whether or not you support them with whomever they choose is up to you, but I wish people would remember that Jeremey is not some anonymous singer who's name most of us on these boards are just now hearing(like Augeri was). He's been a friend on this board and others with many of us for a long time. The callousness of some of the comments I'm reading almost rivals F&F's lack of common courtesy.

Journey will never be taken serious again if they bring in a tribute singer. Anyone here thinking about Elvis at this moment? They should form a new project or bring in an original and established singer that sounds enough like SP to cover the old material.

Well, I am having a real hard time on this. I truly believe that Steve P's voice is one in a million, but, when I saw him perform, he just didn't have the enery, or stage presence that Jeff does, Jeff was alot more entertaining for me to watch, so it would be a really hard decision.
Keep Rocking the World Jeff!

They're all fuckin' tribute singers when in Journey as let's face it, there's not a lot new been happening has there

Stop getting all emotional over this use of 'tribute'.......you don't need to score anymore points as far as Jeremey is concerned, he knows you like him
