Do I have a shot? (at an audition)

Postby JourneySinger » Fri Jun 22, 2007 1:24 am

Greetings!

My name is Ryan Christopher, an aspiring professional vocalist...

Please download my recording of 'SEPARATE WAYS (World's Apart)' and let me know what you think!

Simply click on the following link to hit my page... scroll down and then click on the Filefront logo under the 'SEPARATE WAYS - Journey' title...

http://www.myspace.com/jdiknt2

I recorded this in a home studio last May and have since put together a Journey Tribute - Chain Reaction from Clarksville, TN. We're in the process of booking and getting a 'band demo' together and have also got a Myspace Page going... (very rough - surf at your own risk...lol)

http://www.myspace.com/chainreactionjourneytribute

I've gone back into the studio over the past couple days (after hearing the news of Jeff Scott Soto leaving the band) and have laid down vocals for 6 more recordings...

SEPARATE WAYS - Redone
BE GOOD TO YOURSELF
WHO'S CRYIN' NOW
FAITHFULLY
DON'T STOP BELIEVIN'
ASK THE LONELY

I should have those tracks completed early next week and they will be up on my Myspace site soon after I get them... and I will 'bump' this post when I do get them so everyone will get a chance to download and listen...

Thank again for your constructive criticism and I'm looking forward to the responses I receive...

Sincerely,

'Ryan Christopher'
Jdiknt2@hotmail.com

Thanks for listening!

Dump the tribute act and go for the real deal, you're as good if not better than the current contenders.

I concur with the big D ... also work on getting ...

... in front of a mic that doesn't have a drunk chick trying to sing louder than you.
A cleaner background sound would improve your sale-ability.

Also, American Idol should be drafting new contestants this summer... you might give that a shot.
That would be a fun ride... ;)

Except for the fact that they only take contestants 16-29, I have considered it... I'll be 32 this year, but look 24 (from what I've been told)... LOL

And yes, the LIVE Karaoke clips aren't a very good example of my ability... HEHEHE

They're up there on my site for the comic relief more than anything else...

Did you get a chance to download the Journey, Steve Perry, or Mr. Mister tracks from FILEFRONT?

In closing... Thank you for your honest opinion. :)

OK sorry but I must do this:

When JSS joined, he came onstage to "we Won't Get Fooled Again"

You could enter to "Lasst Train to Clarkesville"

ok ... shoot me now

Oh P.S. - enjoyed the music - great job "Oh Sherrie".

On Jeff's next tour, he should take the stage to "Take This Job and Shove it!".

Thank you... I've been singing since I was 7 years old and only just started singing Perry songs about a year ago... People have told me that it's uncanny how much I sound like him...

I would NEVER say that I'm better than or even equal to him, but if Journey is looking for a replacement, someone young enough to make 'new' music... I would love to have a chance at an audtion, at the very least... :)

Thanks again!

By the way, feel free to send me a 'friends' invite if you have a Myspace page...

Take Care!

Deano (as I've seen you called on these forums),

Thank you for your honest opinion... I'm not familiar with 'Emotional Circular Delivery', but I am constantly trying to perfect my skill, so I will research it and try to apply it.

Is there a specific part of Separate Ways that you saw the 'Pitch Transition' problem? Perhaps I can woodshed the song a little more and find a way to correct it?

First off, Jeff didn't walk on stage to Won't Get Fooled Again. That was Neal.

Emotional circular delivery is what Perry has.

Deano,

What is your explanation? So far, I know I need it, I know Perry has it, but I'm just not quite sure WHAT it is... LOL

To me emotional devilvery cant be explained as it has to be felt and conveyed. I think I did a fair job at emotional delivery on my tunes and what I did was imagine I was in the position of the person saying the lyrics. The smothness of vibrato is crucial as well... I just did my stuff for fun and wouldnt even think of audtioning. Now if the drum chair was open I would be doing just about anything to get an audition because they need a drummer that can sing and I can sing.

Now that you explain it that way... I guess I can say that Emotional Circular Delivery is the 'HEART' behind the song... That 'feeling' that the audience gets when an artist is totally 'lost' in the piece...

OK... Now I understand... and I concur... I do need work in that area... although it is much easier to deliver 'ECD' on stage in a live environment than it is to capture in the studio...

Thank you for your viewpoint... my eyes are opened. :)

No one can even think of matching Steve Perry's emotional delivery on those tuines because they came from his perspective and his emotions. Man does he know how to convey them through his voice. Listening to sweet and simple just rolls my joint ! Wish there was a karaoke track of that one because I would love to take a stab at it now that my voice is getting back in shape.

I voted NO. And it isn't because I feel that you aren't talented. In fact, it has nothing to do with you, or your ability as a singer....

I just think the debacle, we called Journey, has reached it's ill-gotten destination...and they should just pack it in.

Thank you Socratic... I can respect your opinion and your honesty. I can also understand, after everything we've went through as fans, that some of us are not ready for the next incarnation and would be satisfied with a swift ending.

I can't say that I agree with you, but I do respect you.

Hey, good singing. I think you did Stone In Love better as Separate Ways kind of sounds like the band's going through the motions (not your fault man). You're definitely hitting all the notes. Cool.

The chick screaming was bloody annoying though!

Speaking of drunk chicks screaming- We do "Yesterday" halfway through our shows. I go out and do it on my own. Just before I did it this one time, this gal asks me "Do you guys do any Def Leppard?" I said "No, not really, but we do about 45 other great tunes including some AC/DC, etc. I promise, we'll play something you dig". We were in this huge casino, and I started "Yesterday" off and this drunk chick kept screaming "Def Leppard! Def Leppard! Def Leppard! Def Leppard!" Ahg! Same chick who I just said we don't do it to.
Halfway through I stopped and said "Hey, shut the hell up!" The crowd of about 400 totally applauded. Funny stuff. She kept doing it. I mean, I'm out in the audience, standing on a chair with an acoustic guitar (damn, I so wanted to El Kabong her!) and this chick is like 2 feet away at my feet Screaming at me... security finally told her to shut hell up or get out. Nothing better than playing to drunks who couldn't give a rat's ass about anything...
;)
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Thank you... it means A LOT to hear this from other musicians... :)

And working on auditioning for Journey is not the end all be all... Don't get me wrong, I would take it if it was offered to me, but I would also enjoy touring the country in Chain Reaction, my Journey tribute act, OR, better yet, come up with an original concept that could rise to even 1/2 the height Journey made it to.

Again, thanks for your opinion... it is valued.. :)

ROFLMAO...

I can't help but laugh... I ended up marrying that 'drunk chick'... lol And yes, she can't sing Journey, but she's one hell of a dancer (which I can't do...).. LOL

Like I said earlier in this post... I keep those clips out there for 'comedic relief' more than anything. I may end up taking them down and replacing them with recording studio versions OR uploading some LIVE recordings from Chain Reaction, my tribute project...

Thanks for your take... :)
