The production on that song is god-awful. Unfortunately the only live version I've heard is from the ROR tour, which isn't much of an improvement, sound-wise.

The vocal and guitar production is fabulous on the studio version - but you're absolutely right about the drum track. Unless it was deliberately reduced or muted to make the vocal/guitar seem especially righteous....

It doesn't sound anything like the other Frontiers tracks...which Ask The Lonely does...and I've often wondered if this song wasn't recorded or at least remixed in 1985.

Sounds like a drum machine to me.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

I agree...more like a drum machine than anything on ROR...which I guess isn't surprising given that the use of drum machines on ROR is largely a myth anyway...

Yeah, I don't know about ROR, they said Larry Londin played the drums on those tracks, but sometimes it sure sounds mechanical.

Yes, Londin did, Rick - and Smith played on Eyes of a Woman - and on Positive Touch too - the song most often cited as an example of Journey's decline after Smith left.

Smith played on Eyes of a Woman and Positive Touch? Are you sure? I know he played on Why Can't This Night Go On Forever for sure, but I thought that was the only track he played on. I was under the impression the other tracks were a combination of Londin and a drum machine. Or did they simply use a drum machine during jam sessions to get the melodies and instrumentals together?

:x Yea, what a joke that notion is....

Maybe MAYBE the best song on the album. The ending from the time the sax starts to perry's "Oooooooooooooo eys of blue...goodbye yesterdayEEEYAAAAYYEEEYYYAAAYYYEEYYYAYYEYAYEYAYAHEEEYYYYY!!! (NoMoreTails, don't look you know I normally don't condone those vocal histrionics but in the case it works) followed by the swaggering keys and guitars is one of those classic Journey outros I LOVE."
"I love almost everybody."---Rocky Balboa 1990
"Let's reform this thing.Let's go out and get some guys who want to work and go do it"--Neal Schon February, 2001
"I looked at Neal, and I just saw a guy who really wants his band back"-JCain 2/01

Absolutely!!! Image Everything about that song is just right. It may not be what people who think Chain Reaction is Journey's best song think of as being a great Journey song, but the song for it's own sake is done to perfection.
