Steve Perry's Comments

" It has been brought to my attention that there is a rumor circulating that I am reuniting with Journey."

What rumor? There has been a bit of speculation regarding this, but nothing significant enough to warrant a response. This leads me to believe that a) Steve, in some way, knows what is being said on this board, b) he is coming out of hibernation is some way, shape or form or c) he threw the statement together to remain that ever-fascinating enigma that we so love to try and figure out. While I still feel that the reunion most all of us want is a far fetched fantasy, the timing and the fact that he's responding to something this insignificant really makes me wonder. There's no "rumor' of which he speaks. There simply isn't. There's been no radio stations, media or magazines suggesting this. Just a couple of hundred people throwing out ideas/fantasies on a message board. Hardly important or significant enough for a guy with 75 millions units sold under his belt to respond to. I'm left scratching my head. :? I love the way that dude operates. 8) Didn't before, but I do now.

PS For the record, I'm going with choice "b."

My opinon has been and will always be that if he could he would but he cant. His poor vocal cords just dont have it anymore.

I'd vote for (c) and maybe (d): he cares about his fans and music and wants to dismiss expectations.

I also agree that his vocal chords don't have it any more, but there's nothing wrong in admitting that.

 c'mon SJ...anytime Journey is mentioned in the media (like with The Sopranos) talk revolves around Steve Perry & then coupled with the news of JSS out of the band...I'm sure FanAsylum got inundated with tons of emails from fans further spreading the speculation themselves. He doesn't read forums - period!

Mr P is and will always be a class act . I believe he can still sing not maybe the way he did years ago. But if he dose not want to do it that is just fine with me. I got to see them 3times and will never forget it. I have been to many concerts but theres was the best they left you wanting more.

Go around ask people if they've heard of this "rumor." Call rock stations too. Ask at the office. Ask your fucking mailman. There simply was NO rumor.

I go with A. Lora has probably contacted him, saying that we were having high hopes of his joining Journey and saving their ass's. It was mentioned many times here and on other boards. I think that it was Lora letting Steve know that it was being discussed. He said he was sorry for any disappointment. End the speculation.

I am still new at this... Is there some definitive statement from SP that his vocal cords don't have it any more? I see this a lot on this board and wonder if it is speculation as to why he hasn't put out anything in years or if there is something backing this up.

I'd almost rather leave his voice as I remember than really find out. We get on people when they continue to do something longer than they should, yet we also get mad when they quit when we think they may still have more to give.
So many of the groups the majority of us have followed, the people who were/are in these groups are getting older just like us. When is it time for them and us to let it go?

Perry can still sing at a VERY high level. THAT is a fact. My guess is that he wants to sing again, but doesn't want all of the bullshit that comes with it. I also think he's trying to find ways to circumvent the "bullshit" part.

Great post and and very observant.

I too was wondering the same thing....there's only a couple-hundred folks in the universe speculating. So why respond? I want to believe B, but you can't rule out C.

No tj, in fact there have been many statements to the contrary by people who are in a position to know. All of the comments about his not being able to sing any more are just; a) speculation as to why he doesn't, b) someone acting pissy because he doesn't and wanting to lash out with a hateful remark, or c) one of the many means some have employed over the years of trying blame Perry for F&F making a county fair act out of Journey.

Hey SJ,

I said, I'm another STRONG BELIEVER that Perry CAN sing! Period! I didn't bring up anything about whether he sing high notes or not in my post. I realize you enjoy jumping on my post to rag on me, but you need to get a grip!

Since you brought that up though, I've ALWAYS stated that for ME that him being able to sing the "high notes is NOT important to me, there is MUCH MORE to singing than just being able to sing the "high notes" anyway.

I love the way Perry sings with such "passion and emotion" in his voice, when he sings, you can tell it is coming directly from his heart, and that is what I absolutely love about Perry's singing abilities!!!!!!! :D

So for ME, it doesn't matter whether he can sing the high notes or not! Got it Sj!

I'm a believer that you can never top yourself. He was at his prime years ago. I think he wants people to remember when he was his absolute best. Some people can only hope that they are not forgotten. I think he hopes they remember it all.

Actually there was a printed rumor that I read earlier in the week. It was in an article about the Sopranos' finale. I don't recall the exact article, but it mentioned that with JSS being canned, it's rumored that SP may come back.

I am only making the assumption that there is something seriously wrong with his cords from his speaking voice in the most recent interviews. Very. very scratchy and almost horse everytime I have heard him talk in the last few years. I really belive he may have blown them out trying to work them back in to shape at some point after the camelot soundtrack. He sounds like Joe freakin Pesci when he talks now. I hope I am wrong but if you listen to interviews through the years it has progressed and its very obvious. To have what he has/had and to lose it..... It would be very hard to handle. I have to wonder if thats it really why he talks about revisiting the old concerts and how emotional it is for him....

RE: Lost singing ability:

I'm just gonna wait it out 'til June 26th and listen to the final product on the Guff CD.

Then go from there.

8)

PS ~ Go back and check out "Can't Let You Go" ~ his own backing harmonies sound like something from the "Escape" era.

And that was, what.....04? :?

I'm not saying his voice hasn't changed. In fact, FTLOSM, TBF and I Stand Alone are proof that it has. That doesn't mean he can no longer sing though. It means he can probably no longer hit the high notes that he hit with seeming ease 25-30 years ago. I'm one of the fans that don't think those highnotes are what really make his voice special though. I like his more mature sound on his later work better.

If he were to try and sing the catalog now and couldn't hit those notes however, there are lots of fans who wouldn't listen objectively to the way the songs sound, they would just start hurling criticism and insults because he didn't hit the highnotes.

IMO, that's one of the reasons we'll never hear him sing those songs live again. Not because he can't sing them, but because of the last 10 yrs of knowing what hateful things so many of his former fans have been saying about him on the internet messageboards.

What boggles MY mind, at least, about Steve's singing ability is this:

 He has TWO VOCAL STYLINGS / SOUNDS:

Pre and Post "Frontiers".

And they're both tremendous, in their own ways. 8)

Case in point: "Good Morning, Girl" and "What Was".

Heck, I'd LOVE to hear a CD of funky, catchy, and Ballad-style songs in the "What Was" sonic category.....

At the end of the day, what it boils down to is Journey have cheapened themselves to being happy to settle for becoming their own tribute band. I give them a few years of nostalgia before the rot sets in and the fans stay away in their thousands having become bored of hearing the same old "dirty dozen" again and again and again. KISS chose this route and now their army of fans has dwindled from sell out world tours and huge stadiums to maybe a few thousand die hards who are happy (and or stupid enough) to give up their hard earned money and just reliving a dream that will never offer anything new. If Journey just want to do summer nostalgia shows at state fairs infront of a small handful of folks thats up to them. Perry wont be back, Augeri will pick up his career with solo stuff or Tall Stories and JSS will make more friends and do more recording work in a year than Friga and Fro could ever come up with between them in a lifetime.

Actually....a radio station I had on yesterday mentioned another Journey singer "leaving" and that "rumors were circulating that Perry might be back". Then they mentioned an interview where he said "never say never". I think that statement several years ago has kept hope alive for alot of people.

I'm glad he was clear in yesterday's statement, so nobody gets the impression they should rush out and snap up tickets to any future Journey gig, just in case Perry might show up. Fro played that card in front of the cameras at the WOF and Perry made it clear in a post-WOF interview that he knew they used it to their advantage. I doubt he's gonna let that happen again.
