Actually, right now it's 11 PM ~ in Rome. This is an interesting argument, that really boils down to a philosophical question: What exactly DOES the artist owe his/her fanbase? Is it fair to say "I've done my hitch- now leave me alone in peace?" Or if, as in the case with SP, there is a legion of fans begging for more, do you oblige?
Well, speaking for myself ~ and I'm NOWHERE NEAR Steve Perry ~
Music is something that's practically DNA, IMO....you just can't stop doing it.....and I've tried....and was MISERABLE...Isn't it a proper thing to thank the folks that put you where you are today IF you are able to do it at the same level? Personally, I dunno. I can't understand a performer NOT wanting to perform ever again. Almost 60? So's Springsteen, and he's in one of the most prolific phases of his career. So's Sammy Hagar-So's Steve Tyler-So's Paul Stanley... Hell, Jagger is WAY past that! And I don't buy the "Well their voices aren't as good as SP...blah blah blah..." Maybe not, but they are still out there doing it at a very high level and giving their fans what they want.
Yes; you've hit the nail on the head.....but, in regards to SP: IMO he HIMSELF set the standards so high, I really think HE'S afraid that he's not at that level anymore! (ie: high notes, etc.)
But like I stated in another thread ~go with the Low, Man....work your (present) strength.
But, perhaps it is a question with no real answer. It's also true that the man gave his fans many great years of music. Maybe he, like almost EVERY other band from that era, realizes that the muse is gone, an anything new they tried to create would be a a pale shadow of their former glory (STYX? Kiss? REO? Bueller... anyone...Bueller??).
Yeah, but it's not "Your Grandmother's 50/60 Year-Olds" ~ today, this age group is still VERY visible....Boomers.
Good points all, Nora... (It is Nora, right? I'm slowly picking up a few real names)
The BOOMERS are very visible, and as Gene Simmons once said "They'll have to take me away kicking and screaming..."
