I'm posting my AOTW early because US Independence Day is tomorrow. I've been listening to a lot of The Black Mages "The Spirit Within," They're a Japanese hard rock band that take video game tunes, rock them up, then add instrumentation and solos in-between. Even if you're not familiar with video game music, it's still worth a listen. They can shred their instruments.

Holy Shit!

 Very adequate!

It's heavy, isn't it? But two beautiful ballads as well. I find it very catchy and compact compared to their previous records; this record really has a great flow.

I like to keep my reviews short and sweet :D

Yeah the cd is heavy and the ballads are great stuff too. Paradise Lost (the song) is really good

AOTW get split this time around. Symphony X and new Scorpions. That one is pretty good too

My AOTW goes to the Saraya 'Demos Collection.'

A lot of people praise the first two Saraya albums. For me, I think they're just ok. IMO, their demos are their best work, rocking harder than their two albums combined. It does the band no justice for the band to leave them as demos.

Saraya should reunite the surviving band members and cut a 3rd album. It does no justice to leave these top quality rock songs as demos.

Audience - House on the Hill. An oldie I hadn't listened to for years. Found it unpacking stuff that I'd had in storage since the Finland move years ago. Found other interesting stuff too.

Seems like any work by Magnus Karlsson requires several listens to get into. I'm pretty psyched that he and Tony Harnell are doing another Starbreaker album.

I second that, the part about requiring several listens.

Domino Effect has a few good songs on it, but overall 'Human Zoo', and 'Lipservice' were better.

I used to be into PC69, but that was about 8 years ago....How has the stuff been since?

And after 'Eye II Eye', I kinda gave up on the Scorps....

The new Scorpions is really good. The songs are catchy as hell and its worth the purchase in my opinion. Still not as hard rocking as the 80s Scorps but best effort on a loooong while

I didnt like the latest PC69 too much. Kind of bland I thought. But I tell you what, David Readman has a great voice!

I wish I could help. I've fallen behind on female rock reviews because of finances and have had to rely on cd-r trades. But from what I've been told, most of Frontiers Records' new female rock releases mimic that of a harder-edged Heart.

Hey, sorry about glossin' over your question.....

The album is hard to describe. But think Abba meets a rockin' Heart. But it's not a corny Abba. Just the harmonies sound swedish, but in a good way....

'A hard-edged Heart' about sums it up...... :)

Oh? Surely Unbreakable isn't that long ago??? ;) Anyway, they've definitely come back. I don't think you can go wrong with either record.

An oldie for me this week: Saxon - The Eagle Has Landed

The new Scorps caught me by surprise as well. Though I'm only a casual fan, they're new one is extremely good.

My AOTW is one for fans of keyboards and great 80's voices: FM "Indiscreet."
