TW: What’s the biggest regret of your musical career?
NS: For one, right off the top of my head, when Steve Perry decided he didn’t want to go on with our Raised on Radio tour in 1983. He said, “I’m just burnt. We need to take a rest. I’d like to take a year or two off,” so we ended up taking a year or two, then three and four, then five and six, seven and eight and nine and 10. So, there were 10 years that went by and had I known it was going to be that long before he wanted to do anything, I would have moved on at that point with the band.

NS: Well, I know he collects a check at the end of our tour – he must be happy"
the above one needs no more elaboration.

That mistake killed any chance of the band ever having hit records again.
There's only one reason why bands like Bon Jovi and Aerosmith are still commercially successful today: They stayed in the public eye.

Was going to comment on this one as well.

Not sure is he was being sarcastic, but if he was,I have to laugh.Of course SP gets a check,he co-wrote the concert set-list.
Neal and Jon would have gotten the same check if Journey would've toured without them but with their songs in the set.
Oh well.

So Perry had to pay them when he played songs on the FTLOSM tour? Hope they didn't spend it all in one place.

But he cashes them with INTEGRITY, 13.

Yea, that vaunted, brilliant perry business accumen. Used it on his bandmates, sheer and utter class through and through.
"I have NO intention of touring anytime other than my own good time, but I also don't want YOU guys to tour without me unless I am paid to do so. You KNOW I could tie everything up in years of litigation by claiming I did want to tour and you didn't want to a wait a reasonable time for me to get ready to do so. So rather than bog down in that expensive, painstaking, time consuming undertaking, you'll just as soon tour and make the checks out to me on a regular basis."

It's called creator revenues, royalties.Every songwriter gets them everytime his creation is played in public, whether the creator participates or not.
What you said is fiction.

I don't think that is accurate. I think any band can cover any song they want, but they cannot record anything.

Laura is right, BUT it just doesn't happen. Azoff and company, as much as they'd LIKE to, simply can't scour the country making sure every cover band is licensed and paying the proper fees. Jeremey would be the man to answer this. Yo, where you at, J?

Either way, in Perry's case, he gets paid every time they go on tour as if here were there with them according to HH.
SusieP wrote:The composers always get their money. And quite right, too. Sounds to me like Perry went a step further, and maybe Neal resents being suckered into a deal he might now regret.
Sounds to me like Perry is very smart indeed.

I don't get that. You'd never hear live music at bars if that were the case.
I think it CAN happen if a composer of the song says, "Hey I want to be paid for you guys singing those songs or else I will say I was wrongfully terminated from the band and sue." In which case Neal, who was THAT close to being able to continue Journey right away but without Perry, allowed himself to be bent over a barrel in his zeal to carry on. Sure, there's bitterness over there. Sure now he probably says to himself every time tens of thousands go out of his account after a tour, "damn I wish I'd called his bluff, gone to court and subpeanoed those fucking medical records. It would've set us back a good while but the damn thing would;ve suit would've been tossed out and perry would be writing ME checks for court costs and my legal fees."
