OT: Need a good DVD to MPEG ripper and splitter

Currently I use IMToo to rip DVD's to MPEG. It's good, but it splits the tracks at pre-defined intervals. So I can't set a specific start or end time if I want just one song ripped.

Anyone know of another good DVD ripper to make MPEG's. Also, I want to be able to split larger MPEG's into smaller ones easily.

Did I mention that FREE software is preferable?

Looks like most of that is only for ripping the audio. I want to be able too rip the video too so I can share some of my boots here. Appreciate the thought though!

Oh believe me, I've searched that site before - no luck. Downloaded plenty of programs, but none have did the job.

What I want is this:

1. A program that will rip a DVD to MPEG2
2. A program that will let me chop up the MPEG file easily (video monitor drag and drop - no begin and end time b.s. calculating)

Free preferable.

Nero sort of does this but it rips to MPEG4 and the splitting function is very clunky at best

I would recommend Intervideo's DVDCopy. You can rip a dvd into different formats. As far as splitting goes, you can only do it based on how its setup as chapters. ( as an example you can not split a song in half, but you can just take one song from the dvd and rip it .)

Also try Supervideo creator 9.0 lets you convert files from DVD to different formats including mpeg.

If you wanna custom rip and cut parts there's Ulead DVD movie factory. Very good to take any mpeg files youve already ripped to your HD, and just cut and paste and output it as either DVD, or just a file on your HD.

Not sure if this will help you or not for this. If not, it may come in handly for something else. Since being sick I have not used this in forever, so I do not remember everything that it does. Just thought I'd throw this one out there. If not, I am sure someone can use it for something.

u can use "imtoo dvd ripper platinum 4" to rip between certain times on a dvd.. in the upper right corner under General theres a text box for Duration and one for Start Time.. u put the time on the dvd u want it to start ripping at in the Start Time text box -- then u put the time on the dvd which u want to stop ripping at in duration text box.

to know the times just play the dvd in the small bottom right video box of the ripper and it tells you what time ur at as it plays.. like at start its 00:00:00

though its not free.. i can make it free for u.
it's just time consuming to find the times and put them in the text boxes lol.

A DVD is build up out of VOB-files, these files contain the actual data and are in fact "camouflaged" mpeg2's.
So open up your VIDEO_TS-folder in your DVD and look for the first big (1GB) VOB file. drag this into the MPEG Streamclip main frame.
Open all files if he ask for it and let him fix time-breaks. Hold down your shift-key to make a selection and save.

The best format to save to is mpeg4 with H.264 compressor (best quality/size ratio). Make sure "Deinterlace video is checked.
If H.264 takes up too much time, go for the regular mpeg4.

Hope this 'll work as good for you as it does for me.

Oh, and something else... any software to convert DVD's to iPod-video will do fine.
I could give you a QuickTime Pro serial that allows you to cut, paste, etc. your iPod-movies and much more just with QuickTime.

Thanks for the replies, I'm trying several of these methods to see which will suit my needs. Easier ways of doing this will mean more clips from my collection for you all to see.
