Man my voice just wont have it or I would ! That stuff is fun to do from time to time but I could never sing like that live for very long. Just cant seem to quit smoking. My drumming however is in tip top shape !

LD,I don't think I ever heard a karaoke version of Sweet & Simple...Maybe it was connsidered too obscure.
However,I have some really nice Journey karaoke clips.They sound good and have awesome bg voxs as well.

Message of love please ! I am a TBF lover. As a drummer Steve Smith's performance is as important as Steve Perrys so I just love this album. The very end of Message of love is a freaking amazing from a drumming standpoint. I might give that one a try. I still think that I might try record a version of Sweet and Simple playing the instruments myself however that means I have to learn all those parts.... Dunno about that.

If I can do it justice I will post it. Weird thing is that I seem to find it harder to do later Perry stuff even though its lower. It should sound fairly authentic as scratchy as I am sounding latley. Heh

Maybe your voice is naturally suited to the higher stuff? I always say that how a person's voice sounds depends on how they are physically built. A voice is shaped by how your sinuses, nose, vocal chords/folds, diaphragm is built. The voice kind of comes from every hole or cavity in your body and that 'engineering' dictates how you will sound. Like a woodwind instrument in a way. A tenor sax is shaped differently to a Baritone or a soprano and they all sound different. You know what I'm saying. Maybe you are built to sing higher more comfortably than low. As long as you aren't straining to reach high notes you should be fine.
The 'scratchy' sound, however....you KNOW what is causing that.
But no lectures from me - you gotta live your life as you see fit. And it's no fun if you take away everything you enjoy.
But I enjoyed the other stuff you sang on here, Laura obviously did too.
So post more if you ever feel like doing any.

I have to admit I like the sound of my voice better with a little rasp to it. I liked Perry's voice a little better in late 82 through late 83 when he started getting a little bit raspy. I wish Anyone listen to early 82 boots vs late 82 ? You can hear the change in his voice and technique for achieving certain notes. I could be wrong about the year. Might be early 83 thru late 83..

You're correct about the year,'83 it was.Steve himself talked about a deliberate change of vocal technique,in his attempt to explore the entire range of his voice,particularly the lower range.
I also believe that by that time he was already working with a great vocal coach - it's obvious that he learned how to use certain singing techniques,breathing techiques,etc...

Anyway,during the 'Frontiers' era,on the album itself and the live shows,Steve was already a professional singer in every way.
That album is a singing performance that's hard to equal.

Just wondering,LD...I know the drums are your speciality,but have you ever worked with a vocal coach?Not sure if you mentioned it or not.
I think a coach would help you find your right range - like Susie said so many times,singing in a comfortable zone will keep your voice in great shape.
Maybe the Frontiers/TBF Perry range is more appropriate for you.
