Actual Candidates

Postby cscott » Fri Jul 13, 2007 9:29 am

Okay - there's quite a bit of talk about who should be the new vocalist, with most on this board throwing their support to Jeremey, and we know that he has already auditioned for the spot. So here's the question- Does anybody know if anybody else has actually been invited to audition? There's rumors about Chalfant, and Hugo being contenders, but I'm thinking that if they haven't even been invited to audition, then what's the point? Does anybody know if any other auditions have taken place, and who were the candidates?

I could care less who fronts Journey....but if they choose someone who should remotely look like, act like and try to sing like Steve Perry, they will have officially become a parody of themselves.

What the heck is going on with this band?

I don't know who's been invited to audition, but the reason behind them going with someone who sounds like Perry is that the songs were written with that signature sound. I can understand that. What I can't understand is why they were unhappy with Jeff. He did the catalog an incredible justice. He should have been the singer from here on out. The venues were packed and the reviews were great. What the fuck more could the band want?

I think they've just been waiting to make the official announcement...It's DEANO! Don't you think it's a little suspicious the way he disappeared when they let Jeff go? Wasn't he always the one "in the Know"??? I think they'll announce it soon, and it'll come as no surprise to me! He didn't fool me one bit!

With his whole "I'm done with this band" routine, I'm surprised you guys didn't catch on to this!

I don't believe Schon and Friga are giving the frontman position any thought right now. Other than Perry, they have auditioned the only option they have left to keep touring and to put butts in seats. I don't believe Kevin Chalfant nor Hugo are even being considered at all. If so, one of them would've won the job back when Perry left in 98. I think the only thing Neal and Jon are doing is spending time with their families and putting Journey on the shelf for a couple of months or so. Maybe they are doing so because they are holding out for Perry to be back in the band. Maybe they are going to put lots of time and thought into hiring Jeremey. Maybe they are thinking of burying Journey for good and moving on with other musical endeavors. Right now, those are probably the only options or avenues that they are considering.

Then again, I could be completely wrong!

Don't forget that Dean Castronovo also filled in and did a good job on his Perry-like numbers. Seriously, the band had covered their bases. I can't believe this is about "sounding like Steve."

John West or DC Cooper would be great fronting Journey. John West had been in Royal Hunt until recently. DC is currently in Silent Force.

D.C. Cooper is my favorite singer at the moment, not all time, but of guys that are out there right now. Great vocals, both with Royal Hunt AND Silent Force.

Yeah, but you can mark off any hopes of Deen fronting the band, because he has already stated that he prefers to be behind the drum kit and not out front.

But you have to wonder about Jon's remarks, about sounding like the 65-million units that are already out there. That remark sounds like they want Perry back (a no brainer if he'd do it) or another clone, in which case I agree with Liz. This band will, if not already, officially be a joke and nothing more than a parody of itself.

I think they need to give the guy Andrew called super-voice, Tony Harnell ex-TNT, an audition. I'd pay money to hear that. Then I think they should let the fans hear a demo of all the candidates auditions or do a few shows with the new candidates and let the fans vote for who they want. After all if the fans don't like the new guy, nobody will want to see them anyway.

Geez, everyone was just getting into Jeff and it semed to be working. That was the 1st glimmer since Perry. Goofy decision making wins out again. The fans lost and this time the band lost, but they just don't know it yet . Perry = stadiums for a few venues and Jeff =arena's for many cities for many years. Someone should write a book on how not to destroy yourself in 3 easy steps.

Go on and play in your little tribute band loser. Tribute bands...ahhh, let's play other's music. What a concept.

Fuck you and Barry. You may have some supporters here, but NOT me.

People, there is a whole lot of stuff that is happening that must take place BEFORE any new singer is hired officially.

Besides, who the fuck cares who "fronts" this band?

I like the idea though that JSS could hog the mike for most of the night but they'd trot out Deen for the lighter Perry moments. The concept that the band is more than just the lead singer is a good one, which is one of the arguments in favor of the Generations experiment.

A LOT of people said that before Jeff was hired because of what happened with TapeGate. You're a fuckin' hypocrite of the highest order to denounce anyone who continues to follow Journey. YOU did it after TapeGate which was exponentially worse than firing a singer that helped finish a tour.

I will buy you a beer in South Bend for that great point.

BUT... as bad as TapeGate was, I think Dean and MANY others are pissed that they seemed to come out smelling like a rose, then fucked it up by mistreating the very man who saved them. THAT is hard to forgive. But I will try because there is no band whose music I love more than this one.

It's kind of the same concept of early Journey years with Greg Rollie and Steve Perry.

I would love to see Kevin Chalfant front the band. He could save the group, he sounds enough like Perry to pull off the hits, but in his own right is singer all to his self. He is not the time to be pushed around (maybe why the have passed on him), but he tells it like it is. He may pose to strong of a personality for the band. But he like Perry and JSS is a great front man. Augeri was a very good front man (Not great like Perry or JSS). Kevin as some very good songs written ballads, rockers and mid tempo songs. Kevin would want new songs with his stamp on them. New songs is what all true Journey fans want...

My second choice would be Jeremy. He can pull off the Perry hits (we all know that!!) The few songs I have heard the Big J write could easily be made into Journey songs. The only thing that worries me about J is would they (Neal and Jon) run him over, not let him have his input. Would they stop trying to do new music?? I know J would want new music with his voice leading Journey, but would they think it is necessary? But I would like to see Jeremy go for it.

JSS and Augeri would be good coming back, but would they? Augeri was thrown to the wolves, after years of faithful service. JSS got even less respect than Augeri from the group. Would have loved to See how a JSS Journey would have sounded. I had my worries until seeing them in concert. JSS would have got the band in the studio, maybe that is why he is gone, they want no new music. The truly great front men are pushy and demanding (JSS?, Perry, and Kevin?) Augeri was truly a good front man but did not have the presence of the three above. Maybe that is why not so many new Journey cds, Augeri didn't push it.

I don't think Journey needs to get to far away from the Journey sound. JSS at times was too far away, and at times was so close he was steppin on it. Could be another reason he is not in, but still would have like to have had a cd from that line up. So how ever they pick, needs to be Perry clone. No, but needs to be able to pull off Perry while still be there own singer.

That is my problem with Hugo. He is a very good singer, and in his own right the twin brother of Steve Perry. Hugo solo songs sound like songs Perry or Journey would have done. Hugo first solo cd was better than Journey's then just released new cd, Trail By Fire. TBF wished it was as good as Hugo. But Hugo is so much Perry it would be a joke!!!

Perry could always come back. Would like to see that for a final cd and tour (maybe 10 years down the road). But the stars and planets at this time are not lined up right.-ERIC

You know what Deano,

I posted this out of fun. It was a joke! Then you've gotta come in here and make a complete ASS of yourself! I no longer play with Frontiers, and haven't since last year. Am I ashamed that I played with them? Hell no! You couldn't ask for a better group of guys and friends. Something that you're obviously lacking in your life.

I played a bunch of shows with them along the southeast, and had more fun playing with them than any other band I've been in. I played for hundreds of Journey fans at every show, and enjoyed it as much as the people who came to watch us. I played with the band because I'm a huge Journey fan. I'm still a huge Journey fan!

I don't know what's going on "Behind the scenes" with the band, and honestly don't give a shit! I don't buy a cd because of someone's personality (or lack of)! I'm into Journey for the music. All I do know, is that you're a drama queen with your dramatic "exit", and that for someone who says "who the fuck cares who fronts the band", you sure do post a lot!!!

BTW, I think Frontiers is still looking for a skin-flute player if your interested...just let me know, and I'll make it happen. Have a nice day!

Bravo to both of you guys. Image

I hung around through the dismal Augeri years and as disgusted as I am with them for what they did to Jeff it doesn't make much sense for me to give up on them now when I know Jeremey is so much better than Augeri was.

Eric- Why would you think 10 yrs down the road for Perry to join Journey? He'd be 69. If he is ever going to do anything ,it should be now with the DBS rebirth. If he EVER does rejoin I would think not more than a few shows.

I think Journey can still put out some good music. Not the hits they did in the 70's and 80's. But there is still Journey type music in them. Perry rejoining them would be the end. As much as I would like to see Perry rejoin, I am not ready to write the group off completely yet-ERIC
