Raised on Radio Tour on DVD?

Postby PMA » Mon Jul 16, 2007 4:21 am

I've seen a few video clips on YouTube and was curious if there is a DVD of this tour?

Nothing that I know of other than the ROR Documentary. We were hoping Steve would do one of the Mt Aire concert after he did the Houston '81.

Didn't someone ask him... I believe it was in the q and a, and the way he answered, it was like, never going to happen? At least that's how I read it anyway.

Would be nice though. I know it sounds terrible to say, knowing the pain the man was in, but that era is my favorite Stevie.

Yeah, I asked that. He didn't say 'never gonna happen'.
All he said was there were no plans that he knew of.

It may happen if sony every decides they it, I guess... they were the ones that set the Houston project in motion, not him. If they ever decide to haul it out, great. Thus far there are no plans, which is kind of surprising. The last one went gold within 8 months of release. Probably platinum by now but RIAA isn't updated. And the GH dvd did really well too.

Agreed. Despite his choice in attire back then, Randy was the shit.
I just wish he would stop trying to talk like a thug and go back to sounding the way he did in that documentary - like a normal human being who spoke correctly and could string 3 sentences together without calling someone "dawg". Other than that, HELL of a musician.

Please god not an ROR dvd ! I want one with Greg Fucking Rollie ! He was a much better player than cain. More soulful and a better choice of sounds for the tunes. People and places anyone ? I fucking hate cain ! IF it wasnt for Steve Perry that fucker would have wound up a manager at a music store by now. Listen to any thing he has done on his own. Dogshit !

The ROR tour sucked balls. Every song too fast. The feel, mechanical with smitty missing. Fuck that. A dvd from Departure would make my pelvis thrust involentarily for days. IMHO there is plenty of material out there from the cain days and very little from 77-80 on video. See, I dislike cain so much I didnt even capitalize his fucking name. He is a nerdy fucking newt.

You're the only sappy dickhole who would vote a thumbs up for that major prick Jon Cain. He can go drown in the Pacific for all I care..a waste of oxygen. Boy did Herbie get it right when he said Cain "was a motherfucker and would stab you in the back as soon as he could."

What do you mean by this, LD? I can't think of a single Journey track where the keyboard sounds are misjudged with the exception of those synthetic pan pipes on Colors of the Spirit.

Rolie's keyboard sounds from the 70s were great for the time - but they wouldn't have served the band well in the 80s. He would have had to go for a more synthetic or slick sound in much the same way Cain did. In fact, I bet Rolie's solo albums in the 80s feature exactly the same sounds you are criticising for lacking soul, etc.

In your view which songs did Cain get it wrong?

And where's the evidence for Rolie being a better player? This isn't remotely obvious from the Journey studio albums.

Are you talking about live shows? I haven't heard Rolie's solo on the Departure tour so maybe I need to give that a listen. But surely no self-respecting Journey fan can deny Cain's awesome solo on the ROR tour?

Whatever you think of the guy's personality Jonathan Cain always delivered for Journery in a big way until he lost the plot in 1998.

So he didn't get on with JSS? Does that negate his incredible contribution to this band over a quarter of a century?

If anyone needs to feel the heat about JSS at the moment it's Neal Schon....and you know it.

Matthew,

You right about cain delivering for Journey in the 80's. I can not dispute that. I think I would have liked the direction they might have went in with Rollie a little better because I feel Rollie was more soulful. Abraxas anyone? IMHO that album has Rollie playing shit that cain could only dream of playing. Cain could play the notes but not the feel. That is my opinion based on what I hear in Cain's style. And I think he is a homo.

LD,

Surely the opening piano chords of Don't Stop Believin' are more memorable, more classic than than any of Rolie's jazzy, Latino noodlings?

Cain deserves a place in the Hall of Fame for that song alone...

YUP. Randy's a great bassist. Ross is adequate. Too bad he had to do his solo with Baird. THAT guy was a mistake from the word go.
I heard someone say that they passed up Sting's drummer for Baird. Perry's a drummer for God's sake, how could he do that!!??
