I have been waiting for this thread to come up, and have this story to tell you:

If I was there

I can tell you that here in LA, nobody gives a shit about soccer, David Beckham, or his hot wife(as they are a dime a dozen here in SoCal), except all the fuckin illegals that will well, illegally drive out to the Home Depot Center in the middle of crack-meth center of the universe. I wonder if it will be worth it for Paco, Jose, Julio, Lopez and Manorocks(all in the front seat of a beat up 1976 Datsun mini pickup that doubles as a landscape transport vehicle hauling lawnmowers, grass edgers and leaf blowers during the work week), to get pulled over for burnt out tail lights on the way back to East LA, to see a 1-0 game decided in a shootout? Gee, the excitement, of NOTHING happening during the match. I can see it now....Eliga kicks, err, passes a spotted ball across the field to a waiting Dante, who promptly goes down with a life threatening injury....writhing in pain, clutching his left anklel, grimacing. Dante would make Keanu Reeves proud ala Point Break. Anyway, corrupt official runs over to the faking Dante, and calls for the stretcher. The crowd of 679 people are in amazement, when Dante refuses the help(after waiting for 3 mins for the stretcher to come all the way across the field), and sprints off under his own power. So, with NO scoreboard, a soccer only tradition  the official, some poor fucker from Tijuana, "keeps the time in his head." I wonder aloud if he will accept 50 bucks to speed up the game so we can get the fuck out of here, as this is the last place you want to be on a weekend night. Hordes of landscapers, waiters, carwashers and drive up window technicians infest the stadium. I head down to the beer stand again, to order my 13th beer, to erode this infection known as soccer off of me. I get my beers, and turn to get out of line because the guy in front of me apparently doesn't believe in showering and bump into some guy with a FIFA lid on and spill beer all over the floor. I mutter to him,. "take care of that will ya, you are probably better at it than I am." He is not amused. I drink another beer and toss it behind my back in an attempt to throw it into the trash can. The cup clanks off the can and onto the ground. I shrug and walk away. Who gives a shit. On the way back to my seat, the crowd roars....Did I miss a goal? Of course not, as there are never goals. The crowd was excited because Dante ran back onto the field. What a suck it up athlete huh?

The game ends in a 0-0 tie and I said thank God, I am outta here. Then I remember all the 679 people driving the 110 cars(thats approx 7 people to every car you math studs), have no car insurance so I elect to wait it out while they play demolition derby with their 1983 Sentras, Accords and El Caminos. Police sirens are blaring everywhere and cars are careening off each other like bees entering the hive. This amuses me. My first soccer game, and the only thing funny are these illegal motherfuckers crashing their downtrodden sleds into one another.

Just Say NO to Soccer.

PS- the first person who buys our twin boys a fuckin soccerball will get punched in the dick. I am being serious, don't try to be funny.

Ah c'mon, u gotta give it a try bro.....Soccer in the YOUTH community in the US is HUGE!!!! They lose it somewhere at the HS level......Here in Thomas Jefferson, PA (lLeasant Hills) the HS team made it to the state finals, as did the Football team on the same day. They needed the kicker for the the football team (he was kicking 30, 40 and 45's) with no trouble all season and was a major attribute. The state games were at opposite ends of the state of PA. They had a Lear 35 jet pick the kid up from the soccer final and fly him in to the football championships.....The kid won two state championships in leass than 12 hours.....Pretty cool...

Both my kids play. Tyler is 9 and has been hand picked for Travel. (big clique) and Seth is 6 and playing well at the U6. Dean, I have to say, it's huge around here. But then again, I did say at the youth level.....I really like it. Tyler and Seth do play football too.....

Dude, soccer is great for small kids, because the run around like chickens with their heads cut off. Mommy brings orange slices and capri Subs, and a good time is had by all...um, no. Boring shit to watch, absolute crap. Kids get out of soccer when they realize how much fun other sports are and they can use their hands. AYSO is a national day care program masquerading as a youth league. Like I said, my kids will be nowhere near a soccer ball. They will have skates on before their 2.

You may think Soccer is boring, but its the most popular sport in the world.
As far as the TOP 3 sports in US(Football,Baseball and Basketball), all 3 of them are more boring than soccer.

Don't be blind. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world because a lot of the shithole countries cannot afford Basketball gyms and ice rinks.

A coconut and a couple trees is all you need for soccer.

I tried to watch it during the last world cup. I did my best to give it a chance. I'm all about that, but fuck! I would rather watch a fishing show or a bowling match any day. I would rather sit through an Amway meeting or judge a sewing contest. I'll never bore myself with that sport again.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

Glad you said it. 8)
Soccer is the sport that you can just play at anywhere without the damn equipments. :?
And you think those pro players just run around like chickens with their heads cut off, at least they dont need a stoppade every 2 minutes.
they are in much better shape when it comes to be athletes than football players, cause they run , 45 minutes non stop, and they dont need to
stop and go over a play 45 times in a 20 minutes :P and to top it of the scores are realitics. You score ONE time, you get ONE point. not 6,, not
3,,,
Soccer is fun to play,,,, and its fun to watch when its the World Cup.....
You and I will disagree on this, but one thing we both know is NOTHING, NOTHING is as good as HOCKEY!!!! I am just surprised that Hockey is so much more
popular in Sweden than here in US ....

Yep, I would rather do almost anything else. And the world cup just drones on and on.

Sorry, but of all the major sports, NBA players are more physically fit on average than any of the others. I hate to say that because I can't stand the NBA any more. The best overall athletes, not counting some of the fat linemen and kickers, are NFL players.

Are you saying a touchdown or field goal in football should be worth the same amount of points? This argument is just silly.

Sorry, no way dude. There are some fat NBA players. Ever heard of Shaq? Tractor Trailer? There are many fat players. The NHL on the other hand, has zero fatties, because you can't be fat and play hockey.

Regardless, the best, most well-conditioned athletes all the way around would be NFL running backs, wide receivers, defensive backs, and linebackers.

Not a chance......Insert any NFL or NBA player into that game in LA right now, they's be sucking O2 like it was water.....Soccer player are the most conditioned athletes in the world.....Can't be disproved. Football players get breaks every play, NBA players walk alot more than they run. Baseball players andymore are just above a bar softball league.......

I agree, but the really good athletes in the NFL are really like you said, the Wideouts, RB's, D backs and linebackers, but that isn't the entire league. In the NHL, every player is in shape.

Never have gotten into soccer, and probably never will! American Football will always be my #1 sport of choice, followed by college basketball. I can care less about baseball. It's fun watching a baseball game in person, but I choice not to watch it on tv.

Soccer is great for kids, just to wear them out and to get co-ordination. Bob Trumpy would only let his kids play soccer because he felt kids got to serioiusly injured in football till high school. Now as a couple the Beckhams bring on a huge yawn.

Hmmm... some slightly parochial views here methinks.

If 'American' football is so good, why is it that NOBODY outside the US cares about it or watches it? If 'real' football (yes, that game where you use your feet) is so bad, why is it played and watched by BILLIONS of people worldwide, and not just the poor that Deano alludes to. As to fitness levels, I'm sure that all sports have super-fit athletes (you have to be to get to the top in your sport). American footballers are big and strong, and a tiny few of them are lightning fast over short distances. Footballers, or soccer players, have probably better overall conditioning, and RUN on average 6-10 miles during a typical match. How many miles does the average NFL player cover? I'm guessing its in the order of yards not miles.

As to excitement, I'm not saying all football is exciting (some matches are excrutiatingly boring), but many games are edge of the seat exciting from start to finish - that's 90 minutes of continuous entertainment. I must admit I've not watched more than a handful of NFL games, but to me it seems there is probably about 20 minutes of genuine excitement spread out over up to four hours. No wonder the hot-dog stands and beerstalls do so well.

Hockey is an exciting sport, I'll give you that. However there doesn't seem to be much subtlety or artistry in it. And unfortunately, it will never become a major world sport because there aren't enough suitable venues worldwide for it to be played at grassroots level.

Basketball is a great game to play but is, IMHO, mind-numbingly boring to watch. How can a game decided 140-130 be considered exciting, where it is a bigger deal if you don't score when you have the ball than if you do score?

I quite like baseball but it suffers, much the same as our own cricket, from having too many rules and being too statistics driven. It is almost more interesting to study the stats than it is to watch the game, and the moments of actual excitement are sporadic and few.

It is a mystery why, of all the countries in the world, it seems it is only the US (and maybe Canada) that doesn't have football as one of its most popular sports. I'm sure that if you were able to play it to a level where you had a chance of actually winning a major competition its popularity would suddenly soar. That time will come as, despite your best efforts, Dean, to prove otherwise, the sport is slowly growing in the US, and your players are getting better. Beckham's presence will only help that, as he is a world class player, even though he's at the end of his career.

Oh my oh my!.....The Bechams in LA is just about the worst advert soccer could have over there.

1. This is a couple who spend in excess of one million dollars on garden parties
2. They have befriended the biggest retard in the states Tom Cruise.
3. David 'God bless his cotton socks' is just trying to find the right time and place to come out and reveal his real sexual preferences - perhaps LA is the best place for that eh?
4. She's air brushed and has more make-up on than the entire Max Factor factory produce in a month and she's still pretty ugly...not a great advert for American products!
5. They love Elton John...That ain't right as he's all mine
6. She can't sing a single note but makes millions...yep another Britney Spears or dare I say Augeri in drag  You're in for some great music!
7. He's pretty washed up as a soccer player that's why he went to LA Galaxy..he'll look fantastic compared to the rest of the team (Excluding a few good players that they do have)
8. LA Galaxy will play Spice Girl songs in the intermission, so the fans will be expected to wear T's with Girl Power on :o
9. The price of a ticket for loyal American Galaxy fans will probably rocket and the games will be attended by C list celebrities drinking champagne and eating caviaar...who do and never will give a flying fuck about soccer.

Coconuts kicked about on a beach in some third world country gives such great pleasure to people who have nothin', brings children together without fighting and best of all produces some of the best players the world has ever seen....and they don't need to spend a fuckin' million dollars of pathetic garden parties....that kinda of money would feed a village for a year :x

My advice to you all, is send a few dollars to a country in need of a proper football, for the kids who have nothin' and don't feed this disgusting Victoria Beckham machine. DB does help the poorer kids but hes just lost the plot.

How about Cricket in American Stadiums? It's just a flatter baseball bat

I remember George Carlin's ideas about sports...

My Dad was a pro soccer player.Year after year of heavy exhausting training and hard games...I came to respect this sport because I have seen first hand what it means to get to the highest fitness level possible. It takes an amazing amount of endurance and practice to be able to resist and to develop skills.
Funny enough,I've never been a fan of the sport, but I know its secrets. It may look boring on the field sometimes, however, like Marty said,a good game has something that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The game tactics are also brilliant.
I guess one has to understand this game in order to appreciate it.

Speaking of Beckham, here's an interesting switch.

Soccer sucks, it's a terrible TV sport. It will never be big in the US regardless who they bring over here to prop it up.

This is land of the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL etc. with the NFL being way on top.

Soccer is great for some kid's I guess. My kid's play Baseball and will play (real) Football. We are not a Soccer family.

First off, Canada loves the NFL, and they're outside the US. Secondly, The Super Bowl is the most watched event on television, worldwide.

If 'real' football (yes, that game where you use your feet) is so bad, why is it played and watched by BILLIONS of people worldwide, and not just the poor that Deano alludes to.

Perhaps the rest of the world are too fuckin poor and too fuckin stupid. People in Egypt, Cameroon, and Sri Lanka could never be good enough to play real football(the one with the oval shaped brown ball), Real football requires hand-eye coordination, speed, strength and some smarts.

Footballers, or soccer players, have probably better overall conditioning, and RUN on average 6-10 miles during a typical match.

Put a soccer player next to a hockey player, and you have a huge difference in body fitness. The hockey player will have superior strength and toughness as well as being in as good or if not better shape than a soccer player.

As to excitement, I'm not saying all football is exciting (some matches are excrutiatingly boring), but many games are edge of the seat exciting from start to finish - that's 90 minutes of continuous entertainment.

Sorry, not slipping this by me. Soccer is slow motion bullshit crap. Soccer only exists for their hooligan fans to drink and riot. Pathetic.

Hockey is an exciting sport, I'll give you that. However there doesn't seem to be much subtlety or artistry in it. And unfortunately, it will never become a major world sport because there aren't enough suitable venues worldwide for it to be played at grassroots level.

You're joking right Marty? No artistry? They play their game on ice for shit's sake. A guy hauling ass on ice, gently juggling the puck on his stick, all the while being checked and bumped, does not take talent? A goaltender facing 100mph shots is a lot different than a soccer goalie facing a huge white ball at 40 mph. I have always wonder why soccer spends money on nets? They are never needed anyway.

Also, hockey IS worldwide, more so than football, baseball and basketball. Hockey is prevalent in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Czech Republic and of course Canada. The NHL has more international flavour than any other sport.

Basketball is a great game to play but is, IMHO, mind-numbingly boring to watch. How can a game decided 140-130 be considered exciting, where it is a bigger deal if you don't score when you have the ball than if you do score?

I agree with you on the NBA game. Boring as fuck. I try to tell Soto it sucks and he won't listen. To see these huge guys play a timid pussy sport is comical. Fouls? Free throws? yuck. The college game is more exciting, tenfold.

I quite like baseball but it suffers, much the same as our own cricket, from having too many rules and being too statistics driven. It is almost more interesting to study the stats than it is to watch the game, and the moments of actual excitement are sporadic and few.

With the exception of hockey, baseball is the toughest to play. A sport where you are considered goodl when you are successful 30% of the time (batting .300) is pretty tough to do.

No fucking way will soccer ever take off here. Beckham will increase interest, and a few kids will watch, then say, "what the fuck is this? Let's go watch the Cowboys- Packers."
