Both great, but I prefer E5C4P3.

It's pretty much a dead heat for me but I usually give the nod to "Frontiers" because "Rubicon" is my favorite Journey song.

I'm glad you mentioned that... one of my favorites as well... one that I have on 'Chain Reaction's' list of songs to learn... :)

So, Frontiers for me... although Escape is a kick ass album!

Both masterpieces of equal stature. Amazing what a good keyboard player can do for a group, isn't it?

I'm in the camp that if Only the Young and Ask the Lonely HAD been on Frontiers, as the band intended, I'd give the nod to Frontiers.
BUT without them, Escape is a stronger album--I love the title track, it's in my Top 5 Journey songs.

Btw, I love Rubicon as well. Great tune...the intro kicks.

Well, they are on the album now, GollyWally.....

By the way, does anyone know why the production on Only The Young sounds so different from the other Frontiers tracks? I've never been able to get an answer to that one...

Hi Matthew, I understand they're on the reissues. I should have made that clear. I was simply referring to how they were orginally released, that's all. How we all first experienced the albums. 8)

Matthew, the way I heard it was that when David Geffen scooped up the song for the Vision Quest soundtrack, the band re-mixed the song to tweak it for the soundtrack. I'm not a musician but I guess that could have certainly changed the feel of the song.

Fair enough, GW. Sorry if I was being pedantic...

Ah...okay...that would explain the 1985-style drums on Only The Young....cheers, GW.

Comparing these albums is like comparing apples to oranges.

ESCAPE has to be my favorite still.

ESC4P3's got more hits and is more immediately accessible to the ear, with Frontiers challenging the ADHD affected listener w/ material like Troubled Child, Rubicon and Frontiers.

For me, this is REALLY close to being a dead heat but my gut reaction keeps saying ESC4P3.

These two albums could be split by a single hair for me.
I would have to say that Frontiers is my fave but Escape
is more solid.

Dude, we gotta talk about the music SOMEtime.

Can you fix my shit over at your crib, I can't get in for some reason?

Escape- Non-stop hits with some of my favorite all-time Journey riffs and tunes: "Stone in Love," "Escape," "Keep on Runnin'." Very dynamic with a fun, delightful "blue-collar" kind of theme to it all, which works out very well.

Frontiers- Not a "happy" song on this album... but it works. LOVE the hardness, the energy, the experimentation. Favorites here are "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," "Edge of the Blade," and "Troubled Child."

These are my two favorites that aren't the self-titled debut. The self-titled debut has NO filler, while even the other two best suffer from tunes like "Dead or Alive" and "Back Talk."

If they re-recorded "Frontiers" & included "Still They Ride" (which WAS an "Escape" track....but worked PERFECTLY on the 83 tour....see my "Lightning in a Bottle" thread), THEN it's all good.... 8)

frontiers was a little too commercial and polished for me.after the fall, send her my love and faithfully all on side one made it a little too pop.chain reaction is the only song that just keep side one from being complete fluff.side two is way stronger but maybe not in radio hits.rubicon is definitely the most underrated on the album.
