Hugo's comment about being considered for Journey

Postby StoneCold » Wed Jul 25, 2007 5:22 pm

From melodic.net:

When I did the interview with Neal Schon,he said that you were one of the singers they considered on when replacing Steve Perry, you must be honored over such a thing?

Hugo: It was amazing! I had gotten a phone call from John Kalodner at Sony saying that Perry was out of the band and it was time for me to get my Journey records out! After the holiday season, I was to fly out to LA to meet and rehearse with the band.

As it happens, people in the Journey organization decided too many similarities may have been a detriment to the continuation of the band. It was a hard one to swallow, but hearing Steve Augeri fit so well, it was the right decision for the band. The situation ignited the flame in my heart to continue on with my solo stuff. I am grateful for that!!

Hugo would be nuts to take it on now. First of all, his solo stuff is absolutely fantastic. Yes, he has a vocal style very similar to SP - okay, the guy can be dead on - but joining the Journey organization is now a crap-shoot of whims and bad karma. Hugo deserves more than that.

And I don't want to hear Hugo sing Perry - I would not go if he fronts the band (I'm not going no matter WHO the next singer is - I'm of the "hang it up forever and leave us with what good memories we have left before you screw it up any more" crowd).

I would go see Hugo in a split second if he did his solo stuff.

You know, I have to agree with you, I would much rather see Hugo doing his own material, and throw in a couple of Journey covers, then see him work with Journey. JC and NS would probable stifle ANY creativity from Hugo anyway

Classy comments by Hugo.

"Let's reform this thing.Let's go out and get some guys who want to work and go do it"--Neal Schon February, 2001

I couldn't agree more. It sickens me to see people trash him around here. It reminds me of the way Perry-lovers and Augeri-lovers used to trash each other's hero on the BackTalk forums. Now we have the Jeremey-lovers trashing Hugo and the people who like him. I'm surprised they haven't jumped on this thread to trash him yet. Maybe they are starting to mature?

Hugo is a good guy and a sweet soul. Everytime I speak with him I sense the sincere gratitude he has for his fans and peers alike - not the false modesty that others have been known to express. Hugo is working hard on this new record with Josh Ramos & myself, hopefully it will be out soon.

Maybe if some people could stop the criticizing and habitual name calling he might warm up to being on the boards. Someone told me last night this kind of talk is just "guy slang"...I can't imagine calling any artist a "fuck", a "poser", etc. without having had some interaction with the guy.

And I'm from Jersey, so I'm no stranger to shit talking.

For those who don't care for Hugo's work (or Augeri's or Jeremy's for that matter) then address their work. Calling names when you don't know somebody and they've done nothing to you just seems like schoolyard antics.

The realization that the next potential singer of Journey (if we're saying it's Jeremy) had not only imitated Perry but also had a multi-artist tribute show wasn't a huge plus for me...but I don't know Jeremy at all. He's out there making a living. Based on this alone, why would I ever call him an asshole?

No asbestos needed here! :) I am thrilled there will be new music from you guys! Hugo's got the kind of voice that you just buy the CD unheard because you know it's going to be good no matter what! Any timeline on the release?

Most of the talk here isn't bashing Hugo. I simply don't think his voice is strong enough to front Journey on a regular basis. He sounds more like Augeri than Perry (not that it's a bad thing) and his voice is just too thin for the songs to sound right to me. I think Jeremey is a better choice. If that's bashing, then so be it. I can handle it.

Eric, speaking about Josh Ramos, can You tell us what's the status with his other two working projects,
third HARDLINE album Just Add Water, and second RAMOS album with Don Chaffin on lead vox (You're on this one too, if I'm correct...)?

Propably in some of online stores that have their banners on opening page...

Maybe some reissue-oriented record label see the light and rerelease them...

It's a crime that Valentine cd wasn't rereleased after original 1990 pressing...
