ranking journey along with the top bands of all time

Postby mikemarrs » Thu Jul 26, 2007 11:08 pm

between the thirty years of longevity, top ten singles and albums, sold out concert tours and influential standing within the music world i think journey should be ranked right up there with queen, aerosmith, led zeppelin, the rolling stones, etc. i think journey already has two ten million sellers with greatest hits and escape.if escape hasn't hit ten million its gotta be close not to mention a slew of triple platinum studio releases.

And the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, and NSYNC have also sold a shitload of records, and had umpteen #1s....I don't think you can go by sales alone.

Longevity, yes. But then again, The Dead were around forever, and they blew chunks.

I think a group like RUSH, who is a favorite of mine, would be ranked considerably higher than Journey, due to the fact that they've never had a hit single. Closest they've come is 'Tom Sawyer'.

But just what are the criteria for deciding who is to be included among the top bands of all times? And just do you mean by 'Top Band'?

I'm a big Rush fan, too. I agree with you. Remember, though, New World Man actually was a Billboard Top 40 single, albeit barely. They're only actual Top 40 single, I believe.

Rush is definitely one of the all-time greats--talk about brothers to the end (Lee, Lifeson, Peart).

Okay, you guys have me intrigued. I'm embarrassed to say I have never heard Rush. But they are coming to play here in my area (if they haven't already done so). Everyone speaks so highly of them I'm going to have to check out some You Tubes. Oddly enough, I knew the name Geddy Lee....

Triple

Start with Moving Pictures--their seminal work, IMO. They have an ENORMOUS catalog so you'll have plenty to sink your teeth into.

Signals is good, but Geddy was already getting a little too heavy on the Synths for my taste, though I love Subdivisions and Losing It off of Signals. Moving Pictures is their classic sound. Sort of how most people view Escape as the classic Journey sound. And they're both 1981 releases as a matter of fact! Geddy's bass playing on Moving Pictures is the all-time best bass performance ever recorded. Again, IMO. He had that Rickenbacker bass frickin' singing, man. 8)

I respectfully, disagree. Though I've heard that argument as well. What I always respected about Rush was their willingness to expriement, stretch themselves as musicians, and try new things. Every album, to me, has a completely different texture to it. With Signals, they didn't try to record a Moving Pictures II. They experimented and came out of the studio with something very different. And they're still stretching their legs and letting their time birth whatever it does. The glue has always been Peart's unparalled lyrics.

I think most Rush fans who enjoy the progressive era of the band more think they sold out after "Moving Pictures", when they went to using more synths, shorter songs, etc. I personally prefer the era from "Fly By Night" through "Moving Pictures" the best but I've grown to love the rest of their stuff as well, particularly "Signals", "Power Windows", and "Hold Your Fire".

Peart always gets credited with insightful lyrics.....but Kerry Livgren from Kansas is JUST as clever and insightful. And to some extent, exceeds Peart.

No roasting on my part. The enjoyment of music is a very subjective process. The good news is there's plenty of stuff out there for everyone to cull through untill they find the gems that speak to them personally.

I particularly enjoy Livgren's lyrics in "The Pinnacle"...

I've so much to say and yet I cannot speak
Come and do my bidding now for I have grown too weak
My weary eyes have seen all that life can give
Come to me, oh young one, for you I can forgive

I stood where no man goes and conquered demon foes
With glory and passion no longer in fashion
The hero breaks his blade

Cast this shadow long, that I may hide my face
And in this cloak of darkness, the world I will embrace
In all that I endure, of one thing I am sure
Knowledge and reason change like the season
A jester's promenade

Lying at my feet I see the offering you bring
The mark of Cain is on our faces, borne of suffering
Oh, I long to hear you say it's not been wrong
I stand before you now, a riddle in my song
The answer is that sweet refrain
Unheard, it always will remain
Beyond our reach, beyond our gain

Trapped in life's parade, a king without a crown
In this joy of madness, my smile might seem a frown
With talons wrought of steel, I tore the heart of doom
And in one gleaming moment, I saw beyond the tomb
I stood where no man goes, above the din I rose
Life is amusing, though we are losing
Drowned in tears of awe

Speaking of Rush, I just saw where Tom Sawyer is going to be on the soundtrack to Rob Zombie's new reimagining of the original Halloween, due out in last August. Blue Oyster Cult and Peter Frampton are also on the soundtrack. And of course, John Carpenter's still- creepy theme music.

Like 'em or dislike 'em, you gotta respect 'em. They started off sounding like Led Zep. They evolved and changed their style over the years and by the time Led Zep finished up, they were sounding like Rush.

Please don't disparage Rush like that. Zep's last studio album "In Through the Out Door" was horrible. Even "Coda" with the leftover tracks was better than that piece of garbage.

To anybody who hasn't heard the Rush catalogue or has no idea how awesome the are to see live, I recommend the DVD Rush in Rio. Recorded in Brazil in front of 70,000 enthusiastic fans, this is an incredible concert showcasing many of their best songs played to perfection. Just listen to Lifeson's axework on 'La Villa Strangiato' here to se why he one of the world's most underrated guitarists.

And when you hear about the trouble they had setting up that concert (appalling weather, transport problems, the crew didn't arrive at the venue to set up until mid afternoon, the band had no time for a soundcheck etc etc) the fact that the performance is so good is nothing short of incredible.

The camera work on that DVD sucks. The edits are too quick. From Geddy to Alex, to Geddy to Neil....in less than a second.

Nope....R30 is better.

I disagree. Both DVDs are great IMO but 'Rush in Rio' is a better example of a typical Rush live performance and a great sound. It also has those lump in the throat moments such as the incredible audience reaction to 'Closer to the Heart' and 'YYZ' and stunning individual performances from each band member. R30 to me sounded a little too clinical and missed out several of the Rush staples, presumably because they'd been included in 'in Rio' released a few months earlier (eg 'YYZ', 'Big Money', 'Free Will', 'Red Sector A', 'La Villa Strangiato', 'Working Man' etc).
