U know for years I thought Neal was really a God w/his guitar. I now think I was blinded by the way Perry sang alongside it. I've been listening a bit closer to other guitar players. I got turned onto Yngwie by my friend Behshad here. I checked out a few tunes & man, he's amazing. Way superior to Neal.

I love Yngwie's playing but the only thing you can say about him is that his technique is superior to Neals...perhaps. However, who's better than who is subjective.

I'm not talking about his playing when he's doing just the Journey stuff, though even some of the things he did with the live version of "La Raza Del Sol", for instance, was very good.

EVH used to be my god but I think Neal is a better overall player.

Anyway, as far as EVH goes, the dude gets lots of props for his soloing but I've always been more impressed with the guy's rhythm playing. THAT's what keeps a song together, in my opinion.

Then I listened to the track our own Larry From Next Door did w/Jeremey singing. U know what Larry is a better guitarist than Neal these days. Seriously. Neal no longer plays w/feeling. He just shreds now. He's gone downhill all the way.

I was also checking out the FTLOSM boots. Lincoln Brewster is amazing on those Journey songs. He played them respectfully & really well. Comparing those boots w/more recent Journey boots, I just get the feeling that Neal just rushes thru them to get a paycheck these days.

thanks a bunch suz,, but Neal Schon not only blows aways the fans, but his peers.. everyone of them ..he is looked up to in the Guitar community ,, even though there are huge hot spots of Journey haters,,(older blues community),, lots of guys can play faster and more technicle than neal , but they cant write songs... then put the perfect solo in it,, im a guitar midget compared to neal .. ps. im really still upset with him , and STILL dont want to listen to old stuff ..

I so agree, Andrew. Neal will always be my favorite guitarist regardless of who he might be as a person. He has a true gift.

Saw TOTO live the other night and sat very close to the stage. I can say that Luke deserves every bit of praise he receives and more. The guy is awesome and is also much more engaging of the crowd than Neal Schon.

Luke and Neal are both excellent players...I think Luke focused more on jazz and improvisation...more recently he's been sounding like Jeff Beck....Neal I think has been sounding the same for along time...I dunno...Be great to have those two make an album

I couldn't agree more. I love Neal's playing. I also think Richie Sambora is a good player.

So do I Lu. LOL but while playing, damned if Richie doesn't have worse guitar face then Neal.

And as much as Neal's character leaves a lot to be desired, I can't knock his talent when it comes to the guitar. I still have great memories of the magic that came out of Perry's vocals and Schon's guitar.......and what could have been, with Jeff. Even though I've lost any respect I had for the guy, that classic Journey music isn't leaving my player anytime soon.
