Longevity, yes. But then again, The Dead were around forever, and they blew chunks.

I think a group like RUSH, who is a favorite of mine, would be ranked considerably higher than Journey, due to the fact that they've never had a hit single. Closest they've come is 'Tom Sawyer'.

But just what are the criteria for deciding who is to be included among the top bands of all times? And just do you mean by 'Top Band'?

I'm a big Rush fan, too. I agree with you. Remember, though, New World Man actually was a Billboard Top 40 single, albeit barely. They're only actual Top 40 single, I believe.

Rush is definitely one of the all-time greats--talk about brothers to the end (Lee, Lifeson, Peart).

Okay, you guys have me intrigued. I'm embarrassed to say I have never heard Rush. But they are coming to play here in my area (if they haven't already done so). Everyone speaks so highly of them I'm going to have to check out some You Tubes. Oddly enough, I knew the name Geddy Lee....

Start with Moving Pictures--their seminal work, IMO. They have an ENORMOUS catalog so you'll have plenty to sink your teeth into.

No...start with Signals!

Signals is good, but Geddy was already getting a little too heavy on the Synths for my taste, though I love Subdivisions and Losing It off of Signals. Moving Pictures is their classic sound. Sort of how most people view Escape as the classic Journey sound. And they're both 1981 releases as a matter of fact! Geddy's bass playing on Moving Pictures is the all-time best bass performance ever recorded. Again, IMO. He had that Rickenbacker bass frickin' singing, man.

I love SIGNALS too (probably my personal fave) but DAMN that album sound ALOT lot mid 80's POLICE to me. The tempos, the sort of Brit/Reggae edge to some of the tunes...am I crazy or what?

For one, I consider myself to be a HUGE Rush fan....I would venture to say the biggest one on this board. And if you know anything about Peart and his drum solos. O Baterista is basically the same solo as The Rhythm Method(which as a drum solo, goes back to A Show of Hands). It includes smaller solo snippets like Momo's Dance Party....etc.

The only difference in each incarnation since ASOH, is the inclusion of the swing part of the solo, 'One O'clock Jump' by Count Basie.

And 'Der Trommler' off R30 is basically the same as O Baterista, and The Rhythm Method. He changes the name depending on which country the show is in.

I know. I've been listening to his drum solos since about 1978. They are all good, but there are subtle differences each time and Neil's performance levels do change (admitedly between exceptional and brilliant ). He's also changed his grip and that is very evident on the 'O Baterista' performance.

Yes - the Police influence was definitely creeping in - but I'd say it was most obvious on Grace Under Pressure, don't you think?

Yes - the Police influence was definitely creeping in - but I'd say it was most obvious on Grace Under Pressure, don't you think?

Possibly, although I though Grace Under Pressure was most influenced by a band called Big Country.

If you liked Yes when they were in their " Owner of a lonely heart " phase than you would probably like Rush. The early eighties was such a great time to be a rock fan. I had to cut a lot of lawns and shovel tons of snow for the Money to see all the great shows going on at the Philadelphia Spectrum. You had Rush, Moving Pictures tour, Journey with Escape, Styx with the Paradise Theater, Reo with Hi Infidelity, Ozzy with Randy Rhodes. To have twenty bucks for a ticket and a nickel bag it was the best time to be a teenager. Forget the tribute bands, Thank god for bootleg dvds.

I wouldn't claim to be their number one fan. However they have remained unchallenged as my number 1 favourite band for a few months short of 30 years (since I first saw them in concert). I have every album and DVD they've ever released as a band, plus every single they released in the UK, plus all their solo efforts, plus one or two cameo appearances such as on Max Webster's Universal Juveniles. I've read most of the books written about the band (and of course Neal's own books). I've seen them on at least a couple of occasions on every tour they've done in Europe since 1977. This coming October I'm going to four Rush concerts in a week, all in 1st or 2nd row.

I'm sure there are more avid Rush fans (you may well be one of them) but I think my credentials as a Rush fan are pretty good.
