Liberace was better then any of these guys. He was my idol when I was taking piano lessons. He made playing the piano cool.He was the "Elvis" of piano playing. He has gay but it didnt make me gay.I go for Liberace!! He was the best!!

Want instructions for a good Liberace joke?

Take some lotion, white lotion and squeeze some onto the palm of your hand. Walk up to someone and say, "Know what this is?" They say "no" and you tell em, "It's Liberace's last fart."

Cain's not a bad player but Liam's wright. Rudess is kickass, along with guys like Keith Emerson and, my personal favorite, Rick Wakeman.

Totally agreed, 100%. Great choices there.

Yanni is a fruitcake. Jon's written too many great songs over the years to be put in the same category as that moustachioed cheeseball.

With all sincerity - my 9 yr old neice then Bruce Hornsby.

I'm Greek and although most of my Greek friends just love Yanni, I can't stand his music. I equate it to what you would hear in a supermarket or an elevator, only worse. It's really sad that he's probably the most well known artist outside his country when there are such great talents over there. He's just not my cup of tea. BTW, did anyone know he dated Linda Evans from Dynasty for 9 years?? Now THAT"S gay!!! He's also abusive to women. Check out this tidbit from the Smoking Gun.

On the organ yes, but Cain is a bit better on piano imo and much better on synths, supposedly producer Bob Marlette programmed and played the synths on the Storm album.

GOWAN RULES!

You're down under and backasswards bro.

Gowan definitely does not rule. Hell, most on the Styx board agree with me.

Solo Gowan has the power and passion not unlike fellow Cannuck B Adams. Check him out Deano...take off the blinders.

Agree! LOL, ok, so he gets a little freaky half way through.

Hornsby.
What an underrated dude somebody brought up. Good player, good 80s songs.

Hm...Not sure I like too much the latest album with that guy Rick (last name escapes me now).I've heard a few tracks and sounded bluegrassy. :?

But Hornsby IS a piano genius, love everything he has done, especially his first 3 albums,my fave being "Scenes From The Southside".
And yes,he is better than Cain.

I don't think you can compare Yanni and Jon. That's like comparing a charcoal drawing to an oil painting...saying an apple is better than an orange. Those two couldn't be more different. Technically (if you only take piano into account), Yanni is a more technical player. Jon is a keyboardist who layers sounds and builds songs melodically. That's totally different.

To me, being a keyboardist is more than just what's coming out of the keys. It's also about writing songs with a "hook", or catchy melody. Since I'm not into the whole "pan flute/classical piano thing" I'm going with Jon. There's nothing wrong with classical (If you like that kinda thing), but I'll stick to Journey thanks!
The artist formerly known as Jim. :-)

Shania, check out the songs from Halcyon Days...especially the title track (it should be on one of those CD's).

COMPLETELY agree about "Scenes From the Southside". Nine amazing songs. "The Show Goes On" and "The Road Not Taken" bring tears to my eyes every time I listen to them.

And yes, AR & Deano, men have feelings, too!

Steve Walsh is pretty good but Livgren was really the better keyboard player in that band.

Right, ever listen to 'The Spider'? Walsh kills that song. And I mean that in the GOOD way. Walsh was the better player, Dave.... :!:

Walsh was typically the guy to play the Organ-style, chord blasting stuff. Very good at that but it was typically Livgren who composed and played the more intricate pieces.

I'll give you "The Spider", though. Very unique piece of music. Brilliant stuff.

Yanni.

John Tesh is even better as a piano virtuoso than Jon Cain. Jon is a good rock 'n roll piano man but he's not that good solo.

I don't think that it is a question of how good an artist is. IMO, it's the hit songs that you contribute to. Jon has immortalized himself with his intro to DSB. I've seen it written that it's the most recognized of piano riffs. His work during the Perry/Journey years is as magical as is Neals. Neal said, after watching some of the old video's,"We really were good," or words to that effect.
