Captured is my pick as it covered my favourite era, pre Escape.

As they are both Journey Live albums, they are great.

Agreed.

Just opening up the cd and reading through the sleeve (now better than ever w/ perry's reissue) is a major trip in and of istself. Love that book.

Love the dbl record album with the poster and the dust covers with all the concert shots. It's a great live concert but I really enjoy Journey's Greatest Hits live and having them on one c.d. is fun. Open Arms is the best, imo.

EVERYTHING about Captured is better than GH Live.

First, I HATE the title "Greatest Hits". Absolutely no creativity. CAPTURED represents EXACTLY what the recording represents: JOURNEY captured LIVE with a LIVE audience that you can HEAR and actually SENSE are there and into it. Cheap Trick's Live At Budokan does very much the same thing.

The fireworks at the end of GH is anti-climactic. I think they wanted to create what it was like to be at a JOURNEY concert - end it with a bang however the tracklist spans a few years and it has such different tones from song to song that the idea of being at A concert is lost entirely.

The packaging of CAPTURED is far superior. Great photos and a much more appropriate cover with the scarab being "captured" in the always present sphere. It's cool how they put the band members in the sphere, too.

UGH. GH Live is a mess. 'nuff said.

I think that GHL was an afterthought. A way for Sony to capitalize on the success and interest after TBF. Captured was recorded with the intent of putting out a live album, as many groups were doing at the time. GHL was a compilation of recordings which were not necessarily made for a specific live album, thus the inconsistency in moving from track to track.

Captured shows the band on the next to the last step on the way up to the Escape success. After that, they plateaued and fell to where things are today.

For sure!

As you said. It was simply an effort to make money. Making money is great BUT when ARTISTRY is sacrificed for it then I have absolutely no respect for it.

It's so great how the photos show what the fans were like back then. Young, wild, and charged about the band. And it seems to me that the band had a closer connection with their fans back then - a more "organic" relationship. They seemed like they were hungry about their fans - always trying to win them over - trying to "make it" with them.

I saw Loverboy at a rib burnoff festival a few years ago. He wore a vest to try to hide the belly. Nice try but it still looked like he swallowed a volley ball! He still sounded good though.

Without a doubt, Captured. It's truly a live album...I've seen video boots from the tracks on Captured...and the video camera captured exactly what the band played live on the CD.

I have several problems with GHL. Theres tracks on that album that are out of tune, well specifically, Neal's guitar is out of tune...and then some tracks just don't sound right. Escape sounds great, but After The Fall sounds almost painful...same with seperate ways. When GHL came out there was some stupid claim that the 'concert tapes' (which is bullshit, GHL was culled from several live shows) were discovered to be in poor condition and then baked in an oven to recover the analog tracks. Trust me, for anyone that's not a musician or engineer. This claim is complete and unadulterated horseshit. You don't bake magnetic tape in an oven and expect it to survive...no matter what the temperature. To me it sounds like more Steve Perry created horseshit (like the rest of the Journey braintrust, the guy has been known to spin a few long tails regarding his involvement with Journey)...

Captured, to me, is a much better representation of just how amazing a live band Journey was....either that or the Houston DVD (although that performance isn't even 100% live)

I'm pretty sure Captured isn't 100% live...I have the DVD from Japan on the 1980 tour and while it's a great show, the vocals, even with Rollie singing harmonies better than Friga ever could, still aren't as spot-on and full as they were on "Captured." I think the rest of it is live, but they definitely went in and sweetened the backing vocals quite a bit, especially on "Feelin That Way/Anytime" and a few others. Still a really fun listen though.
