Here is the part with SP:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_iMJwW9 ... ed&search=

There may be more, but I'm slow...I'm on hubby's computer now, but it is SOOOO much better than mine - it is so much clearer & sound is better. Except, I can't tell...is SP helping out Cindi Lauper, Kim, etc.? And, it looks like Daryl Hall is getting annoyed...ha. Which reminds me I need to find Hall & Oats recent music - his voice is superb, moreso, I think, than it was in the 80s.

Watch Bruce Springsteen at 5:20 mark here

Bruce has just finished his part, he goes back to sit and SP begins singing. He perks up and looks over. You can tell he's thinking: "Man, now that's a great singing voice."

Right when Bruce was singing his first part, Dionne and Willie started laughing at him. I believe that Huey was also.

These have been floating around for awhile... this is footage from the DVD, isn't it?
I've never seen the DVD but I know there's a 2-disc set. I was assuming that's where this stuff came from.

There was a sign at the entrance of the studio "Check your egos at the door"

In an early article about the project (I think Rolling Stone - later also in "People" in an interview
with Lionel Ritchie) it is mentioned right at the beginning of the article that Steve Perry was the first
to arrive - by himself, drove himself - and ready to go.

The project began with films of children in Ethiopia and the drought.

Ritchie mentions in his article that after the recording sessions he received a call at home from
Perry, thanking him for allowing to participate. Ritchie mentioned that Perry had been so moved
by the situation that he was unable to eat.

Perry wrote and produced the "B" side of the WATW single - as part of his contribution, he paid
for everything - studio time, musicians etc.

Prince was also invited to participate, however, made too many personal demands - so he was
excused. He offered to come back later and lay down some guitar tracks and was given a "No thank you"

Maybe he should have read the sign.

I really enjoyed those two clips, thankyou SO much for posting! I have never seen them before.

To me the voices which were outstanding were Steve Perry and Daryl Hall. Talent oozes effortlessly out of every pore. Class acts, both of 'em.

They leave everyone else standing IMO.
I gotta go play some Hall & Oates now, too!

Thanks for posting this and jogging my memory. I meant to get the anniversary dvd and never got around to it - still have the original vhs, but I don't think it has all of the behind the scenes stuff and "screw up" clips that the dvd has. They recorded this right after the AMA's in 85, and I remember that some of the East Coast performers flew in that morning, went to the AMA stuff then directly to the studio all night. The Springsteen, Perry, Hall lineup really blew away the rest IMO. I remember them talking about that being the one-take group. Just ordered this from Amazon, and realized there's a Live-Aid anniversary DVD out too. Journey's not on there, but Hall and Oates, Bryan Adams, Phil Collins, Santana - lots of other great artists are. It's not the complete concert though.

For people that can see the talent in Perry, you certainly are blind where Cyndi's concerned.

I saw her a few years ago. She opened for Cher. Cher's stage show was AMAZING and a spectacle, Cyndi came out, sang her head off, (she was sick) and I left with more of an impression of her and her greatness than I had anyone in a long time.

It just seems a little immature to trash other artists, but you know, this board isn't known for it's maturity. is it?

Who the hell invited KIM CARNES? She couldn't make it through a first audition of American Idol.

Perry, Hall, even H. Lewis sounded great. Daryl Hall sounds better throwing down soul than doing some of that pop crap that he and the porno-moustached-one did. He's a much better singer/performer today than he used to be. I think Perry would be too, if he'd get off his ass.

The DVD shows that entire session when Perry is able to single out that there was an overlapping vocal track going on when Cyndi L was doing her thing. I love how he called Quincy .. "Q".

Yeah...get the DVD. There's TONS of material on that, not just Steve. Al Jarreau that simply could NOT enter in on time, sang everyone else's lyrics but his own. Yikes. But the concept of getting THAT many artists together was so damn impressive.... get the DVD.
