With that said, I have to say that there are some other kick-ass players out there! While I don't know if I'd say he was "better", this is hands down my favorite solo of all time, by Key Marcello of Europe (formerly that is!). His playing on the Superstitious album is mind-blowing!!!
I know the video's a little cheesy, but if you don't like it...the solo starts at around 2:45. Check it out!

Technically, Perry is his real last name. Perreira was his family name that was changed to Perry when they moved to the U.S., which was before he was born.

Wow...talk about shunning your heritage. I guess they didn't want to be portuguese....
I live in the largest Portuguese community in the USA, Fall River/New Bedford, MA.....there are more than enough Perreiras to make up for his name change.....and Furtados, Chaves, Alves, Ferreiras, Dias, Medeiros, Mello, Oliveira, Costa, Benevides, and Cordeiro.....

Larry, you're a very gifted player. I'd love to collaborate with you someday. I've only worked with a couple of guys as talented as you, in all my years in the biz. Keep it up.

He is very repetitious these days. Secondly and no offense to Larry from next door, but really, based on the you better wait i think you need to get your hearing checked. the playing is not bad but it is not the cleanest playing I have ever heard.

JR (Susie) wrote:U know for years I thought Neal was really a God w/his guitar. I now think I was blinded by the way Perry sang alongside it. I've been listening a bit closer to other guitar players. I got turned onto Yngwie by my friend Behshad here. I checked out a few tunes & man, he's amazing. Way superior to Neal.
Then I listened to the track our own Larry From Next Door did w/Jeremey singing. U know what Larry is a better guitarist than Neal these days. Seriously. Neal no longer plays w/feeling. He just shreds now. He's gone downhill all the way.
I was also checking out the FTLOSM boots. Lincoln Brewster is amazing on those Journey songs. He played them respectfully & really well. Comparing those boots w/more recent Journey boots, I just get the feeling that Neal just rushes thru them to get a paycheck these days.

I love Yngwie's playing but the only thing you can say about him is that his technique is superior to Neals...perhaps. However, who's better than who is subjective.
Yngwie has remained consistently AWESOME for what like 25 years? Don't u think Neal just shreds now? It's not the same passionate way it sounded when Perry was there.

I feel the same way (shredding)- to me, it's like he is trying to catch up playing fast for all those years he had to reign things in.

Earth calling Neal Bashers...get over it. The guy's one of the ten best. Period.

He is great, but as hard as I try and as far as I search, he's not listed as being any better than 23rd of all time rock guitarists. Jimi Hendrix is always number 1 though.

Is Stevie Ray Vaughn in the top 10?

He ranked number 6 on the page that ranked Neal at 23rd.
