Er... can I just point out that The Stones, Pink Floyd, Def leppard, The Beatles, Black Sabbath and Queen are all BRITISH bands. (The thread had asked for American bands). Also Rush are Canadian so I'm not sure they count either - although I'd happily have them in any list :D

Lynyrd Skynyrd
Boston
Foreigner
Kiss
Bon Jovi

Not a fan of all of these, but how can you deny what they have done. When thinking about this list, I was trying to think of groups also that made a impact or a boom somewhere.

Me too, I don't think they should have made the list exclusive. I don't give a shit where any band calls home, if they rock, they rock.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

Greatest American ROCK bands in my opinion...Not by personal preference, but by the typical factors (influence, impact, artistic vision, longevity, etc etc etc)

1 Kiss
2 Aerosmith
3 Metallica
4 Nirvana
5 Van Halen
6 The Eagles
7 Lynyrd Skynyrd
8 Guns N Roses
9 The Ramones
10 Journey
11 The Grateful Dead
12 REM
13 The Allman Bros
14 Bon Jovi
15 Sublime
16 Dave Matthews Band
17 Heart
18 Red Hot Chili Peppers
19 The Misfits
20 The Doors

Didn't include people like Springsteen or Mellencamp, as they weren't really about "bands," per se, nor did I include some obvious omissions like The Beach Boys or The Temptations, cause I don't really consider them "Rock" in the sense of what really developed out of the late 1960's into the heyday of rock and roll from the mid-70's to mid-80's.

Journey
Boston
Kansas
38 Special
KISS
Survivor
Metallica
Aerosmith
Lynyrd Skynyrd
REM
Bon Jovi
Chicago
Foreigner
The Eagles
Van Halen
Beach Boys
Steve Miller Band
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Creedence Clearwater Revival
And the last isn't a band, but daggonit, if we're talking about American music, you have to include Billy Joel in there somewhere.

Pearl Jam at #1?!? Give me a break. Pearl Jam might be #50 or #100, but no WAY are they even close to the top. Aerosmith wins easily. I would have said Journey last year at this time, but hey...

What a fucking joke. Pearl Jam is the worst fucking band of all time. Stone Gossard can't play for shit, they're never syncopated, and Vedder sounds like an off-key, drunken karaoke caterwauler. What a disgrace.

Rush is a Canadian band.

How could any moron try to insinuate that Pearl Jam is better or more talented than the Boss? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH! So frustrating!

Oh,God... Pearl Jam at No.1. Thanks for the laughs.
Hope the ones who decided this will survive the tons of crack they've been smoking only to be struck by lightning.

The Doors shouldn't be on that list either.More crack, for real.

Nirvana.OMG. That band was a shit stain on Rock Music's face. What a disgrace.

Lots of great bands missing from that list.
I'd shrink it to this:

Aerosmith
Van Halen
The Eagles
Journey
Queensryche
Fleetwood Mac (they're British)
Metallica
KISS
The Beach Boys
Bon Jovi

And where's Creedence C.R.?Mountain?Molly Hatchet?Grand Funk?Boston?The Doobie Bros.?Toto?ZZ Top??

Eat shit. They have an extensive catalog, great harmonies, a tremendous guitarist and have stood the test of time the right way. LIVE. Jack Blades has helped pen almost as many songs as Monker has pimples. And that's a shitload. These guys, like Journey(with Perry), are actually better live than on their albums.

As much as I hate to, I have to agree with you on this. The dismissal of Richrath from this band crippled this band. Even the best post-Richrath era song "Love Is A Rock" pales in comparison to the Richrath years.
