Nor should you EVER see them in a list of top 20 bands.

As much as I hate to, I have to agree with you on this. The dismissal of Richrath from this band crippled this band. Even the best post-Richrath era song "Love Is A Rock" pales in comparison to the Richrath years.

Love is a Rock is a great tune, and I agree, once Gary split, it was all downhill on a slippery slope. That is no shot at Dave Amato, is very good, but Gary and Kevin had that SP/Neal thing going on, only not as good.

Just some of Jack Blades' amazing songs (solo writer or co-writer):
As Always I Remain
Bad Reputation (DY)
Brave New World (Styx)
Can't Find Me a Thrill
Damn Yankees (DY)
Don't Talk to Me Anymore (SB)
Don't Tell Me You Love Me
Eddie's Coming Out Tonight
Everything Passes Away (TMG)
Faces
Four in the Morning
Goodbye
High Enough (DY)
I Will Be Your Witness (Styx)
Kong
The Moon (Keagy solo)
The Night Goes On (SB)
Night Ranger
Oh Japan, Our Time is Now (TMG)
Restless Kind
Rumours in the Air
Sentimental Street
Seven Wishes
Sing Me Away
Touch of Madness
Trapped (TMG)
Walk in the Future
When You Close Your Eyes
Where You Goin' Now (DY)
World Gone Wild (Journey)
You Can Still Rock in America

That's hardly all of them. The dude is a FANTASTIC musician (he plays 5-, 6-, and fretless bass, guitar, drums, and keys), songwriter, and performer...and he's a helluva guy, too. Possibly the most underrated musician of the MR genre.

It's too bad Neal gave up on new musical frontiers (i.e. JSS), because they were throwing around the idea of Neal, Sammy Hagar, Jack, and Jim Peterik forming a supergroup at one point...can you imagine?

Anyway, I don't think you're going to win the "Night Ranger" sucks argument on this board, dude. If you did, it would be your most impressive victory, ever.

Never said I was out to win an argument about Night Ranger being one of America's top 20 bands, but now that you have challenged me, let's see.

I NEVER said they sucked. However, you cannot tell me they are better than any of these USA acts..Off the top of my head-

Journey
Aerosmith
Springsteen
Cheap Trick
Boston
Styx
Bob Seger
Van Halen
Eagles
Guns and Roses
Doors
Dave Matthews
John Cougar Mellencamp
Metallica
Beach Boys
ZZ Top
Chicago (even tho I despise that fag Peter Cetera)
Ramones
Bon Jovi
Jefferson Airplane/Starship
Grateful Dead
Kansas

That's off the top of my head, and REO would be slotted ahead of N Ranger.

Ok, hand me the trophy for "greatest victory ever at MR."

"Top 20"...in the context of popularity, they don't stand a chance in hell. But they should be on there on their merit. Hell, Stratovarius, Kamelot, TNT, and Harem Scarem should be household names but no-one has heard of them. I can't argue with you on the fact that most morons would pick Pearl Jam over Night Ranger, because, again, a lot of people don't even know who they are.

They ARE better than:
Bob Seger
The Doors (most overratred band other than Nirvana and Toe Jam)
Dave Matthews (by a long shot)
JC Mellencamp (I love the guy, I have all his records, but he's not as good as they are, nor as talented as Jack)
Chicago
The Ramones (by a million miles)
Jefferson
Grateful Dead (talented, but no concept of melody)
REO

Still, your list is pretty impressive. A lot of the other bands have the avantage of having incredible writing duos (i.e. Rose/SLash, Bongiovi/Sambora, Dave/Edward, Neal/Steve). Jack doesn't write the VAST majority of the band's catalogue, ala Boston, but he did write most of the great songs. I would put up Night Ranger's Top 10 songs against anyone other than The Boss, Van Halen, and ZZ Top).

Journey is in damn good company and it looks like the list is pretty close ... with one exception. Pearl Jam are a bunch of fucking plonkers that will not be played in 10 years, let alone 20. Every band in the top five have earned their right and are played on radio several times a day. Pearl Jam are not even in the same league as the rest. Let the west cost, grunge, druggie fuckers wear their flannels and play the one finger boogie in drop D devil tune. Fuck you Pearl Jam, the best part of you ran down your mom's chin. At least Cobain done the right thing and offed himself. It's just too bad he waited as long as he did.

The rest of the top 5, you guys rock. Now we can argue over the order of the top 4. :)

Couldn't agree with this statement more...Cobain was a talentless hack, but his death was tragic because he left a child behind. Suicide is the most selfish act anyone can perform, and it's downright vile for someone with a child.

Alright man, that list is not right dude. Nirvana in the top 5, no way bro. They brought an end to good music. And Journey not being #1, WTF? I guess Journey should be looking at me to sing then. ;)

Jeremey wrote:Greatest American ROCK bands in my opinion...Not by personal preference, but by the typical factors (influence, impact, artistic vision, longevity, etc etc etc)

2 Aerosmith
3 Metallica
4 Nirvana
5 Van Halen
6 The Eagles
7 Lynyrd Skynyrd
8 Guns N Roses
9 The Ramones
10 Journey
11 The Grateful Dead
12 REM
13 The Allman Bros
14 Bon Jovi
15 Sublime
16 Dave Matthews Band
17 Heart
18 Red Hot Chili Peppers
19 The Misfits
20 The Doors

Didn't include people like Springsteen or Mellencamp, as they weren't really about "bands," per se, nor did I include some obvious omissions like The Beach Boys or The Temptations, cause I don't really consider them "Rock" in the sense of what really developed out of the late 1960's into the heyday of rock and roll from the mid-70's to mid-80's.

Dit-fucking-to. That list is in the ball park for sure. 38 Special needs moved down, Foreigner needs moved up, but the list decent. Now let's don't forget Damn Yankees and Valentine.

Steve Miller Band
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Creedence Clearwater Revival
And the last isn't a band, but daggonit, if we're talking about American music, you have to include Billy Joel in there somewhere.

This is the most plausible list thus far. Great choices.

Is Foreigner not considered a British band, with Mick being the leader?

Wondering about Fleetwood Mac, too. To me, Stevie and Lindsey are FM.

My top 20, a mix of my faves and most deserving in their prime:

Fleetwood Mac
Boston
Eagles - not my fave by any means, but admittedly deserving
Skynyrd
CCR - see Eagles
Van Halen
Creedence - see Eagles
Journey
Aerosmith
Styx
KISS - see Eagles, CCR
ZZ Top
Chicago
Dio
REO Speedwagon - they used to rock!
The Cars
Jefferson Starship - see REO
Blue Oyster Cult - they used to be talented
Molly Hatchet
Night Ranger (I rate the Ramones wayyyy lower than NR). 8)
