2 reasons why he WAS the voice, maybe. It isn't really fair to say that considering many other amazing singers - but Perry was certainly awesome.

Lets hear him now.

Robin Zander, Dennis DeYoung and Ronnie James Dio aren't afraid to perform in 2007 and they do it at a high level.

Steve Perry is like Sandy Koufax in baseball. For a window of time he may have well been the best . However others did it longer and sustained it at an extremely high level.

I made my point and in a respectful way to all that were discussed.

Perry was amazing - past tense. He may have been the best for a period of time. However many of his contemporaries impress me much MORE for being able to perform at advanced ages at almost the same levels as they once did. Calling SP "The Voice" doesn't fly for me. Calling him an amazing vocalist of his time works perfectly though.

I respectfully disagree. He STILL is the voice simply because I have yet to hear anyone, be they young or old, top what Perry was capable of at his prime. Think of it like a Guiness world record. Once the record is established, you're number 1 until someone bests you. Unless you raise the bar higher than what Perry established across his many recordings, he remains the voice, simply because he hasn't been topped.

Truth is, there will simply never be another Steve Perry. He's unique. Always was, always will be.

I feel the same way about Neal. 100 years from now, if we haven't made ourselves extinct, musicians and Conservatory students will marvel at his brilliance and diversity.

Sorry Ed, I respectfully disagree. :) IMO, nobody has topped Perry's vocals since. I haven't come across anybody that can quite sing with the passion and tone that Perry did. So yes, I can still consider him "the voice". :P :)

You're all forgetting about Blackie Lawless/Goozeman (his New York Dolls moniker). Dude blows Steve right off the stage. :D
