OT: Was Bon Jovi inspired by Survivor?

Postby MarcelJordan » Tue Aug 07, 2007 3:11 pm

I was just listening to Bon Jovi's tune called "She don't know me", and was shocked to hear how its sounds uncannily like American Heartbeat.

Sorry not a Bon Jovi fan as such and ignorant to his older stuff. Just wondering anyway.

Yeah it does a little. It's funny you bring this song up because it is my favorite Bon Jovi song. Great track! No wonder I like it does sound like Survivor. I also like Only Lonely by Bon Jovi. I saw them in 1985 and they opended up for RATT! Can you believe it?

I think you're on to something. You know, the classic Dave Survivor material probably influenced a lot more bands than we know. They may have not been prominent, but those blistering guitar hooks and the great melodies probably got in a lot of future musicians' heads.

7 where are the hooks in rock music today? Where did they go? I like Daughtry but even he is a bit too manufactured.

You gotta loook for 'em. Check out these songs:

STRATOVARIUS
""A Million Light Years Away"
"The Abyss of Your Eyes"
"The Kiss of Judas"

KAMELOT
"Snow"
"The Opera"

ANNIHILATOR
"Phoenix Rising"

OZZY
"Here For You"

DRY KILL LOGIC
"Goodbye"

TMG
"Trapped"
"Red White & Bullet Blues"
"Everything Passes Away"

TNT
"She Needs Me"
"Lonely Nights"

JAMES LA BRIE
"Slightly Out of Reach"

EUROPE
"Always the Pretenders"

WASP
"Forever Free"

Anyway, this stuff all came out in the past 5 years or so...except for the WASP song. Some of it's really hard, but it's all incredibly melodic, with mind-blowing vocals and soaring riffs.

Let me take this and put it over its head. I think even Guns and Roses were influenced by Survivor. Yes, that's right. For example Paradise City. The hooks are Survivorish. I don't know much about origins of Guns but really to me, Slashes style is more Sullivan. Maybe Im wrong (haven't listend to guns for a LONG time), yet we all know Mike Clink worked with Survivor so long, and suddenly he's producing Guns. Survivor went pop and here came Guns bringing back the Rock and the influence from Survivor. Ive always felt strongly on that count.
