SP Backing Vocal David Pack-2005

He sounds like he's singing here, doesn't he? Sounds good to me? Is it all fake? I would never have wondered about this song if I didn't read this forum... :)

Whatever the inspiration was for posting this, I'm just shaking my head.

Makes no sense, especially the last line about David Pack. Pack and Perry have known each other for years.

Why would a collaboration between the two be a surprise?

Now I'm curious.

When were the vocals done? Same year it was released?

Sorry--I was just kidding; I meant I wish it was just SP singing. There has been so much said re: SP's inability to sing that I can hardly believe this is him singing this song; and if so, were the vocals completely polished up? If not, he sounds pretty good to me. I'm curious what others think about this tune...

Listening to the words, I'm thinking what an INCREDIBLE song this would have been with Steve Perry singing all the vocals, not just backup. OMG!!!! Kinda reminiscent of "Missing You".

It's a really great song. Thanks for sharing it!!! 8)

Yep that's Backing vocals for you, they are in the background. I know what you mean, you want to hear him singing lead on the song. I like his sound on this, that "rasp" of which people speak is there - and I like that - the mature voiced Perry.
But singing backup is a totally different ballgame to singing lead.
The demands vocally aren't quite the same.
Nice song though. Thanks for posting it. I enjoyed listening to it.

David Pack sang lead for Ambrosia...Espee sounds wonderful to me on this song. Have had the album since the day it was released...

Thanks, Granny. SP sounds good to me, too.
I haven't heard of Ambrosia either - and over here, Ambrosia is a very yummy creamed riced dessert!

This is what I like so much about MR, everyone shares their knowledge so willingly, and I get to discover artists I probably would never otherwise hear about.

I didn't know JSS until I came on here. I bought his Essential Ballads and I really love that!
Have you adopted him yet BTW??

You're missing out if you haven't heard Ambrosia... some great progressive-leaning stuff in their early years followed by a move to a softer, adult contemporary/jazzy ballad type sound later on marked by great chord progressions and big harmonies. David Pack is a fine lead vocalist in his own right and this song (and his whole album) are amazing. Brand New Start really does have heavy flavorings of a typical Journey ballad... the way the piano plays the chords is very Journeyesque, the palm-muted B chord in the verse is a very Schon-inspired nuance, and the E-piano layered over the piano reminds me of a song like Why Can't This Night Go On Forever. No big melodic solo, but the bridge where SP is allowed to cut loose gives the song a huge emotional boost, same effect as Schon's best solos in these types of songs have on you.

Where's Mindy to chime in on this. David and Steve wrote this after 9/11, (forgive me Mindy, I don't recall the precise story, but something like this), as David knew someone at the Towers. I think... don't quote me on this.

David & Steve recorded it and released it in 2005, (and yeah..he's singing) and it got some good airplay on the light jazz stations around here (Los Angeles) at least.

I like the sound of the jazzy/ballad type stuff.
Anyone got any good clips to post and pointers to albums? I'll have a listen. Always open to good voices and good songs.

No clips Susie, but I'm happy to help you out... the Ambrosia Anthology album is a good place to start, here's some great songs from them that fit the AC-jazz ballad feel:

Biggest Part of Me (you've probably heard this one before and jsut dont know its Ambrosia)
How Much I Feel (personal favorite)
You're The Only Woman (personal co-favorite) ;)
In My Life (not a Beatles cover, although they cover Magical Mystery Tour)

Those are the softer, easier tunes.. if you like those, pursue more Ambrosia immediately. A great, great band

Pack is another highly recognizable voice on the radio that sold a shit-load of records/hits. Ah to be a fly on the wall at the Perry/Pack recording sessions with Perry producing that song.

I read a quote from either Perry or Pack years ago that said after Perry's hip surgery, Pack bought him a bass guitar as a get well gift, and took it to him, since he knew he liked to write using one. Too bad he either didn't use it, or we won't hear the results of anything he wrote.

Not a bad song. A little too adult contemp for me, but that's just my tastes.

I do love how David Pack gets shit on by the loons though and that it would be some much better if it were only Perry. Pack is a very good singer. Perry sounds good, but it's a really limited role. Let's be honest.

Anyway - thanks for the post, it's the first time I've actually heard the track.

Can't speak for any of the other loons, but I for one wasn't shitting on him. It's a great song, and I just think it would be SO incredible as a SP solo project.

He sounds just like the 80's just like Uncle Joe said a year ago. It was mainly the Augeri crowd that started the Perry can't sing anymore c 1998. I wish he would finish those voice lessons and just sing some covers.

Susie, make sure you get David's solo CD "The Secret Of Movin' On"!It's the one that has A Brand New Start on it with SP.
The album is wonderful,it's still one of my favorites to listen to anytime.
There's another great voice on it,the opening song.David sang it with Ann Wilson of Heart.Sends chills down my spine,is that good. :)
"Biggest Part Of Me" is on it as well.

Maybe this will help.
