Yep that's Backing vocals for you, they are in the background. I know what you mean, you want to hear him singing lead on the song. I like his sound on this, that "rasp" of which people speak is there - and I like that - the mature voiced Perry.
But singing backup is a totally different ballgame to singing lead.
The demands vocally aren't quite the same.
Nice song though. Thanks for posting it. I enjoyed listening to it.
[I had never heard of David Pack until I came on here.]

David Pack sang lead for Ambrosia...Espee sounds wonderful to me on this song. Have had the album since the day it was released...
Ehwmatt wrote:You're missing out if you haven't heard Ambrosia... some great progressive-leaning stuff in their early years followed by a move to a softer, adult contemporary/jazzy ballad type sound later on marked by great chord progressions and big harmonies. David Pack is a fine lead vocalist in his own right and this song (and his whole album) are amazing. Brand New Start really does have heavy flavorings of a typical Journey ballad... the way the piano plays the chords is very Journeyesque, the palm-muted B chord in the verse is a very Schon-inspired nuance, and the E-piano layered over the piano reminds me of a song like Why Can't This Night Go On Forever. No big melodic solo, but the bridge where SP is allowed to cut loose gives the song a huge emotional boost, same effect as Schon's best solos in these types of songs have on you.

Thanks, Granny. SP sounds good to me, too.
I haven't heard of Ambrosia either - and over here, Ambrosia is a very yummy creamed riced dessert!![]()
This is what I like so much about MR, everyone shares their knowledge so willingly, and I get to discover artists I probably would never otherwise hear about.
I didn't know JSS until I came on here. I bought his Essential Ballads and I really love that!
Have you adopted him yet BTW??

Yep! A voice that can still make a gal weak in the knees.
AR wrote:Not a bad song. A little too adult contemp for me, but that's just my tastes.
I do love how David Pack gets shit on by the loons though and that it would be some much better if it were only Perry. Pack is a very good singer. Perry sounds good, but it's a really limited role. Let's be honest.
Anyway - thanks for the post, it's the first time I've actually heard the track.

Can't speak for any of the other loons, but I for one wasn't shitting on him. It's a great song, and I just think it would be SO incredible as a SP solo project.

Ehwmatt wrote:No clips Susie, but I'm happy to help you out... the Ambrosia Anthology album is a good place to start, here's some great songs from them that fit the AC-jazz ballad feel:
Biggest Part of Me (you've probably heard this one before and jsut dont know its Ambrosia)
How Much I Feel (personal favorite)
You're The Only Woman (personal co-favorite)
In My Life (not a Beatles cover, although they cover Magical Mystery Tour)
Those are the softer, easier tunes.. if you like those, pursue more Ambrosia immediately. A great, great band

Thanks - I just heard Biggest part of Me as posted below - but that's the first time I ever heard it. Maybe they just didn't get much airplay here in England?
Perhaps I can find a CD somewhere and listen to the rest. I'll check it out. Thanks.![]()
He reminds me of Michael MacDonald & Doobie Brothers on the clip.
