Its just that with Joe Lynn Turner on vox - they were in the same market as Journey for a while - and wrote a good mixture of soft and hard rock classics......i'm thinkin Stone Cold and Death Alley Driver......

I loved the Ronnie James Dio era of Rainbow. The "Long Live Rock n' Roll" album is probably my fave from that lineup.

To be honest, that was my favourite era too - songs like Man on The Silver Mountain and Light In The Black, but by the time JLT got on board- it was obvious they were listening to bands like Journey for ideas for a direction - i remember JLT saying that Perry was one of his favourite singers.....

Will never forget the first Monsters of Rock at Donington Park 1980, Rainbow headlining. Don Airey started with that awesome intro to Eyes of the World.....fantastic

I used to have a boot of that - you could hardly hear Catch The Rainbow cos of a bloody jet taking off! But the show itself sounds like it was pretty good (apart from Graham Bonnet whistling during All Night Long!!!!!!

Yeah, thats true, it is right in the flightpath but as a wide eyed 17 yr old i guess we didn't care. I know that to this day its the loudest outdoor event I've been to. It was a quadraphonic setup, there were front PA stacks and 2 rear PA stacks and when Airy did that intro it sounded like a 'Leslie' rotary speaker, absolutely blinding. I only live 5 miles away and the local council went apeshit at the noise levels with it being the first one and all the boring gits complaining - the following year the sound was only half as loud for ACDC and no rear PA! Happy days...

You are a man after my own heart - my last trip was 96 to see Kiss - can't be bothered with download - not my thing, i'm hoping these Zep rumours will go somewhere, cos i cannot bear Deep Purple now, and i dearly wish Ritchie would get the Strat blazing one more time.........in short - there is not that much hapnin to get excited about.........

I think all the singers of Rainbow have had great voices, and still have. Rainbow was one of the bands I was into as a young slip of a lass, and as I already said I still like to listen to them even now

I absolutely loved Rising. That record defined HARD-ROCK for 10 years to come. Sensational , in terms of compositions / musicianship / voice.
With Down to Earth they became an american AOR / hard rock act then they sold out. This doesn't mean their latest records had bad compositions, but the magic of their first 2-3 records was gone.
Joe Lynn Turner is a good singer, Dio was much more theatrical in his singing therefore added his magic touch to Blackmore's playing.
Their latest record with Doogie White has some great songs as well.
But as u may guess, my fav records are their 1st and especially their 2nd. After that record they went downhill.
