Who is MORE recognizable in Journey?

Postby donnaplease » Tue Aug 14, 2007 12:24 pm

OK, I've read tonight about how Neal Schon IS Journey, and of course we've often heard the looniest loons state that Steve Perry IS Journey, so...

Who is more recognizable? When you hear a Journey song, or even when you think about the band called Journey, which performer immediately comes to mind???

Not fair Donna!! You know Steve Perry was my first Rock Star crush and you know what music I prefer. My vote goes to Perry and it has nothing to do with my disgust with Neal.
Until we meet again, may God
Hold you in the palm of his hand.

Without Neal Schon, none of you Loons would ever have heard of Journey or Steve Perry. I don't care what your poll results will be, Neal IS Journey.

How many bands can say that their guitarist is more famous than their singer? And the majority of the bands that do have a more well known guitarist usually don't have a great lead singer, at least not in Steve Perry's league anyway.

Can anyone think of a singer who is as good as Steve Perry, and yet the guitarist in the band is more famous than the singer?

That being said, Steve Perry is more recognizable to the average casual music fan. But that doesn't change the fact that Journey is Schon's band.

Pete Townsend is more recognizable than Roger Daughtry - and Roger is a really good singer.

No offense to you or to The who!

But first of all I don't think that Townsend is very much more known than Daughtry, Townsend is a legend, but so is Daughtry for that matter. Plus IMO Daughtry is not even close to being in Perry's league as a singer. No offense Daughtry fans!

Herbie Herbert started it. Steve Perry and Herbie Herbert made it huge. Herbie was fired. Steve Perry took over. Perry did a pretty good job and went on hiatus. Perry came back in 1996 and decided to not continue. Neal and Jon took over essentially for the first time in 1998 and it's been one bad decision after the other. Though Augeri had a decent run we've seen what kind of decisions Neal Schort makes. They're not good. Had he been guiding the ship since day 1, there never would have been a Journey. It's only been "his" band since 1998. But don't kid yourselves, Steve Perry could come back at ANY time and assume full control if he so chooses. It's HIS band if he wants it. He has simply opted out for the time being.

I don't know a lot about guitarists, but EVH immediately comes to mind. I don't think either DLR or SH are in the same league as SP though, so that's not really a fair comparison, IMO.

I realize that Neal was one of the founding members of Journey, and is a major force in it's success, but I just personally think that it would be easier to replace a guitarist than a vocalist, especially one of Steve Perry's caliber. (but hey, I'm a loon, so what else would you expect?)

Van Halen was the first band that came to my mind where the guitarist is slightly more famous than the lead singers. I am a big Sammy Hagar fan, but I still wouldn't say that he's as good as Perry. And DLR is nothing as a singer compared to Perry.

Also it does help Eddie a little that the band is named after him and his brother. If Journey had been called "SCHON"[b] right from the very start, and Perry was the singer, then Schon would be as famous as Perry.

Ok, enough. Dude, you seriously need to quit saying absolutely stupid shit.

You obviously do not know the inner workings of this band. This is Neal's and Friga's band.

Nothing stupid about it. If Perry said he'd come back, do an album and a tour BUT here are my terms, you don't think they'd hand control right over to him? As long as Neal gets to cash HUGE checks he doesn't care who is steering the ship.

St John- You hit it again. I remember Neal being told HIS band needed a frontman. HIS band was failing. Well, Herbie got (ordered)them to get the voice of the century and some music history was made. The band , that is Neal, wasn't happy and so Perry never really felt like part of the band. But, he was a big boy and walked with the 50-100 million that he made touring only 77-83, 86 7yrs of hell as in no life. Can you imagine where they would be now if Neal made decisions since 1977. PUFF!!!! comes to mind.

I do not disagree with that at all. Just saying, it will always be Neal's band. This would work because Neal, Jon, Ross and Deen are all broke. Perry could fill their pockets again. The problem would be that of all those guys talents today, Perry would be the weakest link in all honestly.

When I think of Journey I think of Neal Schon but when the casual fan thinks of journey the think of steve perry and we all know the casual fan are the ones that count when it comes to album and concert sales. In the music business, diehard fans like a lot of us here are a small minority unfortunately.

If Steve Perry hadn't joined the band, or at least some other great lead vocalist who could also write, then Journey wouldn't have been as famous and wouldn't have made as much money, sold as many albums etc, etc.

However, I think there's an excellent chance that Neal Schon would have been more respected as a guitar "God."

There are guitarists out there that are no-where nearly as great as Neal Schon and yet they get more respect than him because there are so many people who want to knock Journey for their success.

Steve Perry did take over for Raised On Radio and the end result was not that good. ROR was not as great as Escape, Frontiers, Deaparture and Infinity. Also Perry was an asshole and fired Valory and more or less forced Smith out as well. ROR didn't sell as well as Escape and Frontiers, and then Perry didn't even finish out the tour.

So things aren't so great with Steve Perry in charge either.
