What Could have Been - Winds demo

Postby Ratgirl » Wed Aug 22, 2007 12:29 am

I scored this rare gem and wanted to share with everyone what Journey could have had with Jeff.
Sounds good for an demo that isn't fully finished. 8)

Nice score! Thanks for posting. I'd be interested in knowing if there are any other demos floating around out there. JSS did say they had set a studio up on the tour bus.

First time I've heard this. Horrible song, terrible vocals.

Another GREAT example of how Neal Schon and Jonathon Cain have lost all of their artistic greatness. This song sucks dingleberries. Steve Perry couldn't have made that song good. And you'll almost NEVER hear me say that.

I believe it sucks, too. All I had to go on was the bootleg video from the live rendition. I wasn't positive whether it sucked or not.

Now I am certain that it does.

I hope that the other stuff they wrote together while touring is better than this and would love to give it a listen if anyone has a source.

Powerful opening chords yet tranquil. Jeff’s calling is behind the keyboard singing soulful music. Neal’s best performances are with sustained notes. Granted, it may not be Journey material, but it is beautiful.

Okay, this track does kinda blow, and I LOVE JSS, but I have to say part of that responsibility falls on him. It's just kind of like a reading of your 6th grade history book set to Journey-ish music....and any song that references "freedom" in the last 5-6 years has, without fail, sucked. (Hear that, Mellencamp?)

I think it could've been a decent song with lyrics that aren't about pilgrims and stuff, but I don't think it lives up to the potential that this lineup has.

I think it's odd that Jeff is such a rocker and the first (only?) song they wrote together was a schmaltzy patriotism ballad. *shrug*

I'm going to preface this as someone who's been on record as not being in favor of JSS in Journey. I didn't like this song when I saw the youtube clip. Now that I've heard it as a clean demo, here's my thoughts:

I like the melody of this. The vocals have a skilled quality, but more importantly, they have heart. Something that's been sorely lacking in all of the Augeri stuff. I think overall, it's not a bad song. Rather its an example of an over written song. It's too wordy and the lyrics are more than a little cheesy. If the lyrics were simplified (and the subject matter were less cheesy), I think this could have been a solid song for a new album. A new direction and a truly new Journey. One I think I would have supported. Clearly they need a producer working with them. I put the shortcomings of this song squarely on Jon Cain's shoulders.

As years go on, It's pretty typical for an artist to become dissatisfied with their own work. By attempting to do more than they've done before, they tend to overwork their art and this song is a good example of the result. My instinct tells me the outcome of this song is what made Cain press Neal to oust Jeff, thinking "it doesn't sound like our legacy". Yeah, well, without Perry, it won't.

Perry's voice wasn't the only thing he contributed to Journey. The three of them together molded some great songs, shaping them like a piece of clay until just right. Seems to me that Cain has resigned himself (and the band) to just being an oldies act. That's a shame, because I have no interest in going to see the greatest hits tour anymore. Not unless Perry is out front.

I didn't wonder what might have been with JSS before. Now I do.

Just how so?

It is a Jon Cain written track - and one written for a specific occasion, not a new album track. JSS does the very best he can with what he has to work with here.

Love JSS' voice. Just love it. It's the best thing about the song.

Lyrically, it's total cheese. They're even too cheesey for the specific topic. Way over the topic - bordering on melodramatic. I'm sick of hearing about faith in his lyrics.

Glad this was posted. This is just more evidence that a good NEW voice in Journey is not enough. Soto sounds great. It's the song that's a dud. Cain is a Cheesemeister andstinks even more as he aged. Anybody that thinks the addition of Cain to the band isn't what slowed the tempo down to a crawl is nuts. Perry saved those ballads he was forced to write with him, from obscurity. Give me Perry and Schon writing Stone in Love and THAT is what Journey's direction would have been....minus Cain. Too bad we didn't get a chance to see what JSS could have done with them, if they'd given him a fair shake.

Yeah, I was floored that they didn't come out with a rocker for Jeff's first song. I guess Cain controls the band now.

HYSTERCIAL!

You know, I'm weird in that I don't HEAR the lyrics for the words they are....all I hear is the way they sound. I couldn't sing all the words to any Journey song...thats how bad I am. I just thought the song sounded good...I like it.

I don't have a fucking clue what most of the words to songs are. All I know is that JSS's voice sounds great on this song even though the song sounds like muzak.

I just figured JSS wrote the words, since that's how these things usually work.

If it was in fact Friga, well... Then I just feel bad for JSS for having to sing them. His vocal performance is great as always, but man, those lyrics are bad...I'm not a lyrics person, I hear the rest of the music first (that's what 5 years of music school will to do you), but when someone starts singing about pilgrims and stuff in a rock song, you can't help but be distracted by it.

It's like something you'd write for Pilgrim Day at the local elementary school.

JSS sounds great, though. The only thing about his performance that I don't like is throwing in the "Yeah's". This plus his rocker tone tends to clash with the elemetary school choir lyrics and arrangement.

It's like JSS wants to take it somewhere that it possibly can't go. He gives it his best shot, though! They should've rearranged it around JSS' style.

Agreed. I could be wrong, but I thought I read here that Jon/Neal wrote that one when Jeff was overseas for Talisman.

I actually like the song. JSS vocals are great and very Perry-esque, in my opinion. Schon's playing is also melodic instead of that shredding crap. The song would be a lot better if the vocals were replaced with more generic references instead of the specific ones made about Jamestown.

You know, JC writes about grace and faith ad nauseum (or if I've spelled that wrong I meant to say until I want to puke). That's fine I suppose but you have to WALK THE WALK if you;re going to TALK THE TALK.

Tapegate and the way JSS was handled speaks volumes about the LACK of grace and faith in this band.
