With Down to Earth they became an american AOR / hard rock act then they sold out. This doesn't mean their latest records had bad compositions, but the magic of their first 2-3 records was gone.
Joe Lynn Turner is a good singer, Dio was much more theatrical in his singing therefore added his magic touch to Blackmore's playing.
Their latest record with Doogie White has some great songs as well.
But as u may guess, my fav records are their 1st and especially their 2nd. After that record they went downhill.

Me too, AR. Alltough I never heard the Doogie Howser (or whatever his name is..) era, I loved the rest. I was practically raised on LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL, and I thought the JLT albums were all fantastic.

Got to see ALCATRAZ at a festival back in the day, and watching MALMSTEEN tear into ALL NIGHT LONG and SINCE YOU BEEN GONE was pure pleasure~

That's cool lil' lassy. Dio's good, he just has too "metal" of a voice for me. The others were alright too, I guess Graham was just my favorite. He was not too metal while not being too much of a puss either.

I think all the singers of Rainbow have had great voices, and still have. Rainbow was one of the bands I was into as a young slip of a lass, and as I already said I still like 0307 0307 0020 0004 9296 74580020 0004 9296 7458to listen to them even now :D

Ritchie Blackmore is my favorite musician so of course I love Rainbow. I just had Strangers in Us All on the CD player this week after not listening to it in awhile (I have two cuts from it on a gym cd). He definitely closed his rock career on a high note with works like Wolf to the Moon, Ariel and Black Masquerade. Stunning stuff. I just went to Berlin to see him and got up front at the end of the show, close enough to hi five him! Ritchie has that special magic and charisma that all legendary musicians have.

He's also one of those amazing people who gets more hair the older he gets! Along with Quiet Riot's Kevin Dubrow he has a master wigmaker at work....

JLT--FYI

Postby (Crazy)Dulce Lady » Thu Aug 23, 2007 5:00 am

from Howie Simon's myspace..

Hey everyone-

Wanted to let you know I will be appearing on "Rockline", the syndicated radio show on Sept. 5th, with former Rainbow/ Deep Purple vocalist JOE LYNN TURNER! Joe and I will be performing 4-5 of his songs acoustically live on the air. The show airs in many markets, but some of the affiliates don't air it live. You can however, listen live on the internet. Please see the official Rockline site below for full details and schedule. Hope you can tune in and check it out!

True, now he's even dyeing gray into the weave/wig or whatever it is. It's amazing how some of these guys can retain their looks into their 60s, like Jeff Beck and Tony Iommi. Good for them. Who wants to look at bald/old farts?

love rainbow apart from the joe {cant sing} turner era. saw them twice first at monsters of rock castle donington then at ingliston {edinburgh} for a open air concert where BOSTON/TALKING HEADS/MOLLY HATCHET were support groups the whole day was a blast and must admit boston pushed rainbow all the way for best show as tom scholtz had the full size church organ on stage {ooohhhh how i would love to get a hold of a dvd/video of that day........ rumour has it that blackmore is auditioning musicans for a up coming " rock group" to do a finale world tour with songs from all groups he has played with...

JLT can't sing? What planet are you on. Even if you take just the vocal for 'I Surrender' you have to say its an awesome performance.

I was at Monsters 1980 too...happy days

Agreed! JLT CAN sing! He may look rougher than a whore on a nickel night, but he can sing!
He was a great singer for Rainbow, Yngwie , Deep Puprple and also his solor stuff.
JLT is still a great singer. Arthur doesnt know what the fuck he is talkin about.

Absolutely! Preferred the JLT era, although RJD was great. Ritchie's always been one of my fav axe slingers.

I LOVE Rainbow. Hate to say it, but I think Ritchie belongs there above all else. I like how the topic of this was "Did" any of you like rainbow rather than "Do" any of you like rainbow, as if it has to be past tense because the band is no longer around. MUSIC IS ETERNAL!!!

I love the first four Rainbow albums with RJD. Most of those songs were great. They have a few good songs thereafter but I don't like the commercial direction they went in.

Just dragged out 'Rising', 'Down to Earth' and 'Difficult to Cure' - three different singers, all great performances but I think Ronnie just does it really....what a voice.

What an awesome thread!

Whilst I'm now in my 40s, Rainbow and old Ricardo Blackmore were my first musical love. It started with the awesome 'Rising' and every album since.

Has there ever been a band blessed with some many great singers? I must say Dougie White did himself proud in the 'final' line up. Joe Lynn Turner was a remarkable singer; I Surrender, being for me, the best recorded vocal performance ever. Old Graham Bonnet toured the UK this year, but the voice has gone, he was never the best of live singers, but still the Down To Earth album was a great listen.

Favourite albums: Rising....Difficult To Cure..Stranger In Us All.

Some youtube faves..

Blackmore and White acoustic session: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egt7mJsIaJQ

I Surrender: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ29pVhsdMs

Lets hear it one last time Ritchie....

Right, back to Journey!

Cheers,
